Why step into a place with one genuine bartender, well theres no reason. The live music is there but there is no kindness or appreciation upon being served. We as customers must understand that beer/ale is overpriced at bars but we are there for the enviroment. I do not think that there is a manager in place and if there is please rid of the unhappy employees, its a bit of a drag seeing subpar workers. read more

Emm....so Box. Is it a pub, is it a club, is it a music venue? Well it seems to be all three all compacted into one stretched out venue. I've been to better places and there's only a few wee things that makes it any good is the company I'm in, it's free to get in and there's sometimes some awesome bands playing. I normally only end up in here late at night and I have to say that the music isn't too bad. I felt I was at my choir at one point with some of the tunes, some Hall & Oates and Harry Belafonte. Shake shake shake señora, shake it all the time. Oh yeah!!!! So much dancing was to be had. Dancing you say? In a bar? Well, it's where ever you can squeeze in to pull some shapes. Most happens up at the back, where I found myself last Saturday night. The drinks are pretty rank to be honest and after a certain time they start serving them in a plastic cups. I thought I would be safe with a coke but alas, oooft! I don't know if I was still getting over the last coke in Brewdog. Eugh! Anyhoo, the toilets are what you expect for a club/bar/venue, nae soap and bring your own toilet paper. I have seen some good bands in here, Three Card Trick are awesome and do play here often. It is weird though having the stage in the window, if the band turned around and put up a red light, it could be Amsterdam. Roooooooxanne! Anyway, if your night's going well and you wanna keep the party going, squeeze yourself in here. You'll be lucky if you get a seat, so probably best to go early. Don't expect anything wonderful, clientele is a mix of Indie kids, students, lots and lots of them young ones, I've heard they sometimes get a bit feisty, so be on guard. Well it's been nearly two years since I last wrote the last review, better do an update since then. well nothing much has changed since the first time that I came here, sticky floors, tables bad stench of domestos bleach. I had met with a few friends in the Bon accord and we where due to meet here afterwards but as I was first here I was refused entry as I arrived here first not because I had too many but as I arrived here first, they now have a door policy of guys who turn up on their own a no door entry policy. Rude and arrogant door staff who can barely speak English,the door person Daniel who refused me entry said because I turned up in my own I was refused entry. Without even speaking to the bouncers who were checking ID of the ones in front they got to me and waved me in saying "your old" Geeee thanks - insulted before I even walk through the door, way to give a great first impression the box Go in and it's pretty warm and full of sweaty drunks, thought yeah this is a quick stop then away. Then it happened - big labowski on tv and cheap White Russians .... we stayed for an hour and drank 6 each!!! If you look past all the skinny jeans, a visit to The Box can sometimes unearth a pretty satisfying experience. On a recent visit, a group of very young Dundonian neds that took to the stage turned out to be fantastic and the slightly nuts crowd they brought along provided a vibrant, if marginally threatening atmosphere. They were followed by 3 more sombre guys from Ayrshire who dished up tunes of similar quality to their predecessors. In fairness, I think I got lucky on that visit as the vast majority of the acts on show here are tiresome indie clones, but it's still worth popping in. It's a bit grotty and noisy for a quiet drink, but always has a bit of life about it. read more

The term "dive bar" was practically invented for this place. It seems to be the place emo haircuts go to die. When my friend eagerly dragged a group of us here for pre-ABC drinks one night, we protested with, "But you make it sound like a total unsigned-indie-mental-institution!" She denied it, but when we got there, it seemed we were indeed correct. You do have to commend their ability to stay open 7 nights and provide a platform for unsigned bands, however. It's a bit of a "crapchute" as my American friend would put it. You might see a band that catches your fancy, or they could be playing a backwards rendition of Old McDonald and you wouldn't know the difference. At least they're trying, I suppose. Definitely not my scene, and if you've never visited before, it's probably not any of your friends' either. If you're in a band or love your up-and-coming indie, though, fire away! read more

Live music seven nights a week, this place is a tidy little venue on Sauchiehall Street. My mates bands have played here on several occasions, which is excellent - no door charges, a decent stocked bar, and it lets them get out there and er... gig. Fair enough, as mentioned in one of the other reviews, the standards of bands aren't always amazing - once you've seen one indie band donning the stage in skinny jeans and a check shirt, singing about girlfriends past, you've seen them all - but ocassionally there are a few decent bands. The bar itself is well stocked - well, it has cheaper versions of most spirits and shots, etc, which would be ok, but at the weekend they seem to cost more than the mainline spirits themselves would elsewhere. "Oww!!" Sorry, I've just walked into Box and been clobbered in the face by the side of a guitar. Actually, this didn't really happen, but I am just emphasising how close the stage in Box (used by the live bands that play) is to the front door. By the way, since when was this place called "THE Box"? I've always known it as just "Box". Anyway, it is definitely one of the best venues to check out local indie bands in the city. The prices are a bit steep but not as bad as most of the other wee dives in the city that host live bands. And unlike the other places which are mostly music venues that are just there to be music venues and require a ticket for most gigs, Box is more like Bloc - in the sense that it concentrates on being an ordinary pub first and foremost, with the live music being almost a bonus on the side (if you get what I mean!). There are no tickets required, at least any time I've been there. It is a very young, studenty crowd which frequents Box and it can be very busy on a Saturday night in particular. And in the case of the bands, em, so-so - some good, some bad. But the chances are you'll be going just to check out your friend's band, so you'll be interested in what's going on either way. read more

Box is the type of place you go as a last resort. Its noisy, overpriced, and its standard of drinks is appalling. If you're there after midnight, your drinks are served to you in a plastic glass, which I understand is a legal matter, however I resent paying £4 for the pleasure. Box has always struck me as a schizophrenic business; its laid out like a pub but plays loud music like a club, serves drinks in plastic glasses, but charges you high class West End prices. Its cliental are a mixture of 2am drunkards and down and outs, and 'Indie' kids who have played in various bands earlier that evening. Its open until 3am every night with bands on for free, and as a result is a pretty dirty place to be. The floor, the pint glasses (if you get one) and the toilets are all ghastly. It's a place to go when you can't be bothered with nightclubs but you haven't had your fill of the fizzy just yet. I've only ever been on Thursday nights, when the place isn't busy and you can get a seat. If the place ever gets packed then it would be unbearable. The music is a mix of inoffensive popular indie stuff. Kasabian, Franz, Prodigy etc. I think of it as a pub, rather than a nightclub, although there is a space at the back should you wish to get your groove on. But because I regard it as a pub it loses marks for having obnoxiously loud music. Honestly, it's like they're trying to set a world record. 3 drunk lasses were dancing, 20 people were sitting trying to talk to each other, do the bloody math Box music staff. read more

Box is somewhere I visit quite a lot as my boyfriend often plays there. I think it does it's thing well: cheap drinks (particularly Sunday - Wednesday), live music and stay's open late when you're out and want to keep going but don't fancy a club. However it's not somewhere you should go expecting the finest beers, a comfy seat or a classy evening. There's some things I love about the place, they've got quite a connection to Still Game, with some entertaining cocktail names and the occasional surprise DJ sets from some of the cast. They have White Russians (which is possibly my favourite drink) for about £2.50 which always improves my evening. Classic films are often playing on the screens and personally I think there's a cracking selection of music. Old and new there's always something to dance to as the night goes on. The toilets, however are awful! They need ripped out and renovated. haha It's a little grotty but I have had many a good night at Box so it's hard to judge it too harshly. read more

I'm generously awarding 2 stars for the nice drinks, relatively fast service and the live music alone. The cocktails were very nice, and the live band that was on the last time I was in was pretty awesome! I should start off by saying that had I not already been inebriated I would never have considered entering this place without a crowd of people. I used to go here for a friend's gigs, and whenever one of our lady friends were alone, they tended to be cornered like a gazelle strayed from the herd by some sleazy guy or another. The Box can't seem to decide if it's a bar or a club. One of the big let-downs is that it runs like a club but is 'policed' like a pub. That is to say there are no bouncers inside the bar, not unless someone goes to get one from outside. Not ideal when things start to get rowdy, and they frequently do. The clientele are generally not the sort of crowd you want to be alone with if you are just a couple of ladies on your lonesome, which in this case we were. Perpetually harassed the whole evening by a crowd of loud, sweaty guys on some sort of lad's night out, neither myself nor my friend were able to get any space of our own. Even when we alerted the bar staff that we were being harassed, we were not helped, even when I had to shove a person away and declare loudly that he and his friends should leave us alone. Not being the soberest of persons at the time, my brain did not initiate the *leave bar now* function, not while I still had drinks to be consumed. Curse you, drunken brain! Get with the program! Eventually we did just get so annoyed that we left. Tis OK for a group, but if it's after 11pm and you have less than 6 in your party without a male amongst you, it is very likely to be a bad idea. read more

People complain about Box but you know, I've never had a bad night in here! I don't know if I romanticise this place because even though it's not been the destination of choice, when I've ended up in here it's been great. Perhaps not having an expectation leads to having a blast, but I really don't think it's that bad at all! I tend to hold it in high regard as this was the place where me and my boyfriend often met in the early weeks of our relationship. Its free entry, music video jukebox and promise of live bands made it as good a place as any! It's good at promoting new artists and a great platform for bands to get noticed in their infancy. For that reason, it's often the venue of choice for first gigs and such. You see a lot of different kinds of musical artists and indeed customers in here. The worst part about this place is that its music orientated vibe and affordability often attracted arrogant imbeciles. Once, some tosser in skinny jeans stole my seat, but I hope he regretted it (I obviously gave him a stern talking to, I didn't punch him or anything). Probably should have though, rudeness winds me up. But if you sift through the wank, concentrate on the music and your mates and aren't too fussed if you can't find a stool or a seat, it's no bad at all! Bar staff are friendly and it's open till three - better show than a lot of bars in the centre of town. read more

Erm, The Box, what can one say about this place without me sounding like a complete and utter stuck up twat? Well there is live music almost every night. So, if you like cover bands, bad 90's indie style haircuts and ear bleedingly loud music then this is your place. If you get off on the smell of strong bleach (in an attempt to mask the puke smells from the night before) then look no further. If you don't mind peeling yourself of the sticky seats / tables then come on down. If you like to dance with sweaty men or women, you will get laid in here! The two stars are pushing it, really. The two occasions I've been to The Box have both been very different. Perhaps it was all down to the people I was with, The box redeems itself by having excellent White Russians. Frequent visitors to my Yelp profile will know how much I love White Russians. There's even chocolate sprinkles on top and priced at a meagre £2.50, you can't really complain. The bar staff are also quite friendly and the live music is cracking. What keeps this review at only 2 stars is the uncomfortable seating, the sticky tables, the lack of room to move, the cold toilets and the creepy men. I was with two other females and my boyfriend (so I was safe) but my two friends regularly had to put up with creepy men coming up to them, buying them drinks. I mean one guy even had a cheek to chat up the two of them intermitently. I'd like Box more if it wasn't so...creepy. Alas, it's two stars for now. read more

Not my favourite place in the world. Morally obligated to go to see a friends band recently, I made the effort but couldn't quite handle it. Full of scenesters with yawnable chat. If the bar was cheaper, I could have made a night of it, but alas.. I ended up indulging the music nazi in me by listing songs that the support band had ripped off just to satisfy myself, which it did adequately. The stage is right when you walk in, so the bands play with their backs to the window. A bit awkward. Intimate, but not in a good way. read more

Small but well formed, The Box is an indie bar on Sauchiehall Street that focuses on live music. I went a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night (though it's open 7 nights a week) to see a friend's band. My first discovery about the place is that it's not as cheap as it looks. Yes, there is no door charge, which is brilliant considering the number of live bands that play (there were five acts the night I was there). However, they make up for this with the price of the drinks; a pint and a vodka mixer will set you back the best part of a tenner. Ouch. So yes, the stage is squeezed in beside the door and a lot of the bands are kinda rubbish - but there's usually a pretty good atmosphere - and when you get a good band the gig tends to be really good. read more

I've not always been a big fan of Box. It's the place you go to when the place you were in has just shut, so it's got the late-night thing going for it. Two bars there, one in the front and one in the back, make for ease of service, but I find too often that the staff are too busy looking bored to serve anyone at the back bar. They are nice though, the staff. They messed up my order and promptly fixed it without any hassle, which is nice. But a little voice in the back on my mind chimes in 'They shouldn't have messed up in the first place.' I ignore it because, hey, we all make mistakes. I find it difficult in Box because it seems to have a 'meat-market' mentality about it. Inevitably, one of my group always gets stopped by some cheezy fellow looking for a last-minute pull. Ugh, I'm outta here. Overall, it's ok. I don't know if they'll be able to scrape together enough clout to have a real reputation as a live venue, but I'm rooting for them anyway. Some wee niggly things need to be tweaked in order to maintain repeat business, but I think they could do it if they tried. read more

I know The Box is a Marmite kinda bar; you love it or you hate it. There is no middle ground. Sure, it's a bit shabby and dated in places, but they have live music constantly, and into the late night / early morning hours - which is always a good thing in my book. They have an extensive selection of White Russians starting from only £2.50 that I usually partake of, and their beer range is wide and varied too. The live bands are obviously a draw, but the music selection when there's no band on is pretty decent too. It's also a prime spot for post-wrestling activities - there's an ICW based cocktail list, they show wrestling matches on the TVs on ICW days and even do pre and post show offers and parties. If you're a wrasslin' geek like me, then this is a huge drawing point. So, yeah, some people will hate it for sure. I've seen people say all sorts of things about squelchy floors and dodgy seats, and for sure, it may not be the brightest bar around, but I've never once failed to have a good time when I've been in. Go along with no preconceptions, dig the live band, drink the White Russians and have a good time. read more

The Box is somewhere I've never felt inclined to go. It has the reputation of being somewhere that you go when you can't get in elsewhere. However, on Friday night a group of us decided to head there after the Yelp event at Smile Cafe. I have a few thoughts on the hour I spent there: 1. It has a good little stage just as you go in, perfect for having local artists to perform. The guy playing whilst we were there was nicely chilled and enjoyable to listen to. 2. I quite liked the layout of the bar - fairly long and quite narrow, but lined down one side with booths. 3. There was an ok selection of beers, but the Punk IPA was off - we got bottles of it though, so that's a win. 4. The bottle of Punk (usually just shy of a fiver in a lot of bars), was £3. Awesome! Most of the other drinks on offer were pretty darn cheap, too. 5. There was quite a mixed crowd, and a nicely relaxed atmosphere. 6. The door staff were very much of the overly zealous nature - with a side of unnecessary antagonism. I will probably only go back for a gig, but it's also not somowhere I'd actively avoid. read more

Box is a club/pub that has bands playing most nights of the week. It mostly plays indie music, with a bit of pop and older bands like the Stones and the Beatles thrown in. I quite like Box, but it's very small. Although it stays opened until 3am there is no dance floor so people try to dance in the very small spaces between the tables and the bar. It means that people are constantly banging into you all the time and trying to get a drink from the bar to your table without spilling it is almost impossible. read more

this place simply rocks, it ooooozes class and in a non pretentious way, any venue who support t he next big thing in grassroots music and doesnt make them pay to play deserves a medal. Talk about a trail blazing wee venue then this is it! The atmosphere is top notch , its warm inviting and staff are very friendly, the drinks are not too hard on the pocket and remember you havent paid to get in and its open till 3am! this place at the weekend is heaving if only it were bigger thats my only gripe but not too big as its not th size that matters is it its what you do with it, and they at box do with it well indeed. read more

I was having a drink there and I tapped one of the bar staff on the shoulder to ask when they closing. The bargirl just looked at me and then kept walking. The fat bouncer with long hair and glasses then came up and said I need to leave because he's had complaints about me tapping girls on the shoulder. I was shocked. I hadn't been in BOX in a while, but i went in the other night and it was great. It was an Open Mic Night hosted by Ross from Fatherson who is amazing! Its much cheaper than Sleazys and not full of arty people. For a late drink its either Firewater - full of indie middle ages guys, or Sleazys which is not to bad but i liked BOX just seemed quite cool read more
