Run down, feels like ceiling is falling apart. I did not feel safe let alone letting my 10 year old play there. Avoid this place.

I decided not to join because of the price and distance. Anyways, this review is for the weight room... if you could even call it that. Seriously, my tiny high school had a bigger and better weight room. I go to Asser Levy Recreation, so I guess I'm spoiled with a pretty nice gym considering the price. The weight room is a tiny little cage (literally, it is fenced in) in the basement, with one tiny mirror. Very limited machines, small range of dumbbell weights, no space to do any barbell exercises (deadlifts, squats, lunges....). There's a smith machine and one incline bench set-up. Just a disaster really. The cardio room had a decent amount of machines so that was nice. I guess I gave an extra star because it's cool that there's an olympic powerlifting team, and the place is cheap, and the basketball courts looked nice.

I was pretty bummed out when I learned that this was the closest rec center to me. The weight room…read moreis separated from the rest of the basement area by walls constructed of wood and chicken wire. The cardio room is a long rectangle with machines down each side which are awkwardly placed. I didn't feel like this place was maximizing it's use of space. Also, the first treadmill I hopped on was broken. Seriously, only 3 of the buttons worked. In addition there are no locker rooms. Rather, there is one small row of lockers, many of which didn't appear to work, which are placed outside the restrooms. The only plus of this place is it's cost. $75 for a 6 month membership and $150 for a year's membership.

Just one caveat: there's no shower. So after a long workout, you can ride home on the subway sweating and smelly. Lost Battalion is cheaper than the NYC Parks Department Centers with a pool, but just pay the money and go to a center with a shower and a pool. I used to work out here before I moved on to the East 54 Street Rec Center in Manhattan.

The court is in good condition, decent grip, they've kept it clean enough to play safely. A guy there told me the floor used to be really slippery before they refurbished it. I hope this floor holds up. The courts do overlap which can be dangerous but there's not much you can do to fix that other than taking some hoops away or doubling the size of the gym. They play ball Thursday nights (insanely crowded, similar to that scene in "Scarface" when they were playin ball in Freedom Town), and Saturday afternoons (much less crowded, sometimes it's even empty). There's all levels of competition but there aren't many people who just started learning to play, which is good. Newbies should not be playing in a crowded high intensity environment. Especially if they're big strong athletic dudes who get emotional when they get embarrassed. That's how you get flagrant fouls everywhere and guys running into your knees for a loose ball. They don't know what's dangerous and what's not. I've seen that at a lot of other rec centers but not here. The center in Flushing is full of these guys combined with a slippery court, your just asking to get hurt. The staff tends to turn off the lights like 10 mins early to get people to leave, not cool. Be careful with the schedule on their website. It'll say something like "Basketball today 2:30-5:00" until you click somewhere else that'll say "except the first Saturday of the month". That's the web designers fault. They could easily put that info in the same line instead of a separate page. Yes I checked the site one day and drove in just to be sent back home. Within the 5 mins I was there asking the staff to explain to me how to read this tricky online schedule at least 3 other groups of guys came to play ball too. I'm sure the staff hate that online schedule just as much.

I remember it took me about 2 minutes to run 1.5 laps if I remember correctly. Mr Dammann was the track coach when I was in Newtown high school. His office was next to the boy's locker room. The girls locker was all the way to the left side. I remember there where a lot of lockers big enough to fit a jacket and bookbag. There was about 4 toilets in the back, 5 urinals in the middle. And the room between toilets and urinals were 3 or 4 sinks. The front of the boy's locker room was showers but I don't remember if it ever was opened. I arrived around 4:30 p.m. with my 13yr old son and two of his friends to try open play. The court was completely packed when we arrived, and the staff suggested we come back around 6:00 p.m. because it "would clear out." We left and went to Atlas Park to pass the time, then returned at 6:30. At that time it was equally packed so I asked at what time would it clear and how do they manage the time of players. The staff member said they "just look at the cameras," or check payments which, to me, sounds like there is no real system and that people can just stay as long as they want if they are known by staff. There seems to be no regulation or order about when someone's paid time is over. After waiting,I expressed my concerns about the time management. The staff then proceeded to tell me that I could pay at 7:15 p.m. and that the boys would be able to play on the right basket because the group there was leaving, since it was a private session. A group of approximately 12 boys who had been playing in the middle basket came over to the basket where my son and his friends were playing. The group of boys approached my son and his friends and stated that they would be playing a game first and that my son and his friends could play after their game was over, which would be taking away from the time I had just paid for. One of the boys even made a comment like "don't make me violate you," which is completely unacceptable and clearly meant to intimidate my son and his friends so they would not play. I immediately went to the staff to express my concerns. For a proper game especially in a space with just one hoop there should be a maximum of 10 players, so this was already an issue. The staff member walked over and asked the boys if they could play together or move to the other side. The boys argued with the staff, ignored what he said, and simply continued their game. The staff had no real authority, and nothing changed, so we ended up leaving. I am extremely disappointed not only because this place is taking people's money without any clear way of tracking court time or giving everyone a fair chance to play, but also because the staff could not ensure a safe and respectful environment for players. I had hoped this could be a regular place for my son and his friends to play and maybe even become members, but this was an awful first time experience. I hope management seriously reviews their open play policies, staff training, and crowd control so families and players can feel safe and actually get the court time they pay for.
