Easily the best camera shop in town for the professional or discerning amateur. Well educated staff are professionals and passionate photographers themselves able to give advice based on experience. If they have what you need, they will have the best price in town; however, their best-in-class prices don't mean that much if they don't have everything in stock (which seemed to be the case with some popular glass for a while. Likewise, if you need b/w darkroom supplies or chemicals this is one of the only games in town. Found out later after photo recording numbers were advanced that this BRAND NEW camera had over 3000 previous pictures taken with it - Think may have been used by ex Camera store employees for their DP Review video on it - or not - what the hey! I literally walked into the store with absolutely no idea of what I wanted, or what anything was or how anything worked at all. I explained my situation (wanting an affordable, reliable DSLR, etc.) and the assosiate was able to help me pick the perfect set up. Even 3 years later I have never had a problem with the product. They have a great rental option - which has helped me throughout the years. I have rented mics and lenses for great prices. I live in Calgary, not 10 minutes cycle from the store. I have been in several times but I can't remember ever buying anything, I never get a straight answer. Q. 1.Have you any used Canon Lenses? A. why would anyone buy a used lens? Q. 2. I am interested in moving up from DSLR to HD Camcorder, what do you recommend? A. We have a Canon 50D that takes Video and single shots. I already own a Canon 50D but I need a dedicated camcorder. Everyone uses DSLR nowadays, they're the best. Ever tried using a DSLR on video mode for more than 30 minutes, whatever make, it gets hot to the touch and switches off. Q. 3. Do you have a Canon XA-20 or XA-25? A. Oh yes, Q. 4. What a wonderful store with amazing staff! I was in the middle of a trip between national parks and my DSLR camera sensor had a major piece of dust on it that was showing up in most of my photos. They helped me figured out that I didn't need to wet clean my sensor which saved me at least 40 bucks and even helped me clean the sensor! (They won't clean it for you due to liability but will gladly guide you through it) My pictures are back to looking great now. A couple weeks ago I ordered a Canon XA10 from TheCameraStore, online. They failed to state that the currency was in CAD, so I ended up paying a $71 "Foreign transaction fee" with Visa. That came after 5 payment attempts failed and they told me I had to call Visa support to even place my order. Of course, I wasn't made aware of this until the fee showed up on my account. Even though I paid them $25 for shipping to the US - I ended up being sent an invoice from FedEx for another $88. Again, something I was never told would happen. To even receive my order from FedEx, I had to print, fill out, sign and fax back 2 huge documents to FedEx, another huge inconvenience. On top of all of those unwarranted charges I was never made aware of, I paid over $200 above MSRP to get the cam. My first experience with the camera store what when i went and bought my Nikon 70-300mm lens. They were very helpful to me as I was just starting out and had a lot to learn. They were very willing to help me out and give me some pointers as well. Since then I now have more lenses and a full frame camera and I am still happy with them. They consistently have evrything product in stock. There are very few times you ever need to special order something. you just go in, ask for what you need, pay for it and walk out. no waiting a few weeks for the product to come in. We have a part time photography business and The Camera Store is definitely our store of choice. We've been going to them for about 4 years now and have received great service every time we've been in to see them. Everyone is extremely knowledgeable and helpful, they are always willing to answer our questions. We've had to return a camera body at one point and that process was painless as well. They have a small parking lot and are usually busy, so be prepared for that, but we highly highly recommend them for all your photography (and video) needs! I've always enjoyed visiting The Camera Store (TCS). I've been a customer and admirer since they were a hole-in-the-wall on 17th Ave. Usually a great selection of items and I had never had an iffy salesman experience ... until recently. I was asking some pretty pointed questions to one of them about a particular DSLR system as I wasn't going to drop a fair amount of cash to switch away from my existing one without getting some VERY solid answers. After 10 minutes or so, I could see that he was getting flustered. I wasn't trying to make him look bad, but he was having a hard time answering some of my questions and so he was getting flustered and starting to give off a bit of a bad attitude, even an arrogance that I had never experienced there before. I asked if I could play around more with the body-lens combination I was interested in, and he obliged. He came up to me 10 minutes later saying they were out of stock but that he could put me on a wait list, yet with no guarantee on the sale price, i.e. no "rain check". I was ready to leave the store anyhow, put off by his attitude. I proceeded to find another retailer the next day that did have it in stock and was willing to match TCS price. Normally, I would have waited for the item to arrive at TCS, but this time I didn't want this particular salesman to benefit from the sale. TCS missed out on a pretty significant sale that day. I had never dealt with this guy before but I recognized some of the other staff that had pleasantly dealt we me, Mr. 101 Questions, in the past. Too bad for TCS sake that I hadn't dealt with one of them. For the money I was willing to spend, a salesman should have been able to put up with a lot more than my inquiries! So although you could once go there and nobody gave you attitude, this experience changed that perception for me, sadly. Now I'm tempted to go to other retailers as my first choice since TCS is no longer mine. read more

bought a Nikon d600 but asked about the issue of its splashing oil on the sensor. Was told, it's nonsense, never had one come back. I own one myself, never had a problem...blah blah blah. So of course I now have oil on the sensor and Nikon will swap out the sensor for free, and issued a new camera D610 because this happens all the time. The camera store's response on the phone was ya Nikon basically lied to us, bring it in we will rush it to Nikon for you, have it back in a week. Took it in and they said, no, someone lied to you on the phone, we send your camera off it's gone for 2 months. These guys are kings of the bait and switch, anything to get you into the store to high pressure sell you. As for their professional assurances that I could trust their word and the camera they were selling me? Nay we don't replace faulty items we told you, that you could trust, nor do we supply you with a camera while its on warranty, just give us money and quit complaining is their response. Avoid this place at all costs is my recommendation. read more

This is by far the best store in Calgary for all your general camera needs! The employees have some how learned my name, and I am only in there every month or so. TCS is always packed with people, yet there are always tons of very very helpful staff willing to go out of their way to help (Dean and Chris are stand outs!). Some local camera stores are a bit intimidating, but NOT TCS. I have dealt with rentals (and they have a wonderful rental departmen) several times, and they are very accomodating! The sales staff are great, and so are the products. Their policies on returns/defective gear are fantastic, they really go the extra mile, and that is rare indeed these days!! They don't always have what I need, but they will order it. They also sell used & refurbished gear - you can ask the staff for their inventory. They also put on a big Expo each year, bringing in speakers and doing tons of great workshops. Love The Camera Store. read more
