We are traveling through this city and came through a bit late, so we stopped at this Pub! It was so cute, it had a really immersive interior. I really felt like I was stepping into a pub, like a classic rugby players come here after games pub. They were setting up karaoke but we didn't partake. It was a bit hot (not miserable) so we ate out on their patio. The art was really pretty. We weren't sure what to order so when our server came around we asked them what they suggested. They told us the fish and chips were really good and so were the wings so my mom and I ordered that while my brother got Wings and sweet potato fries. The fish and chips were delicious, the fish was so crispy. My mom really liked the coleslaw and we both loved the chips (my mom ate them with ketchup and I dosed mine with vinegar). My brother really enjoyed his wings but his sweet potato fries were absolutely amazing. The servers were all really nice. I don't remember our server telling us their name but they had a pineapple tattoo on their hand and they were really attentive and friendly even though we were outside! We all really enjoyed this place! Would definitely come again if we weren't just traveling through. read more

Ambiance is dated - nothing has changed in over 20 years Service was ok - which was a bonus as prior cat & fiddle had down right horrible service. Still not great though Food was horrible. Husband's fish and chips tasted freezer burnt. My chicken pot pie was dry (either missed sauce or was heated so many times it had evaporated) and the pastry topper was dry and tough. I was really hoping the food would be at least as ok as it was before, but unfortunately that was not the case. read more

I've been here many times over the year with my dad for beer & wings and alway enjoyed my experience. However after moving away I hadn't been here for a couple years and brought my in laws for a very late dinner. I understand that the main kitchen has been closed already but they were gracious enough to let us order off the normal menu. Most of our food was good, but my mother in law who is celiac had to order something with a bunch of alterations to make it gluten free. And unfortunately they must have missed an ingredient with gluten in it as she got quite sick that night. I still like this place for a good pint and apps but wouldn't come here for dinner again. read more

Who doesn't love a nice English pub? Decorated as you'd hope, draped in red velvet, The Cat & The Fiddle is adorable. My favourite date and I popped in here for a quick pint and a bloody caesar while my mom cared for our lil' cutie. We didn't order any food, but the burgers piled high and the French onion soup caught my eye. When next in the 'burg we will definitely be back. Worth noting: Cash only. read more

Monday night in small town Southern Ontario, our first choice from the Yelp list wasn't open, but the next most appealing was... and I'm really glad. I had a steak and mushroom pie that was as good as any I've ever had (maybe better!), with terrific fresh-cut fries. My wife had a haddock (and shrimp) pie, baked under cheese covered mashed potatoes that, while quite rich, was really good. Service was pub-friendly. The old house-turned-pub was pretty impressive too. The only downsides: for some reason that evening they couldn't accept credit or debit cards, so cash was necessary (not expensive, fortunately), and two beverages on their menu weren't available (the two we ordered, of course). I would have liked to have tried some of their beers, but we were in the middle of a six hour drive and didn't think a snootfull would be wise as we continued on towards Toronto. In short, if you want to get off the 401 for a good meal, this is a much better choice than an OnRoute fast food experience. read more

Hungry and searching for a meal, we stumbled upon this place. We got here at around 4:30 pm, sat down and ordered our food at 4:50. The food came a little over an hour later, which was disappointing. I'll be honest, I wasn't impressed with the food. The food was okay, and definitely not amazing. It was a little expensive considering the taste. I also noticed that there are quite a bit of flies in the restaurant. During the course of the meal, we were constantly swatting the flies. Although, the wifi was excellent. Came here for lunch and were a little surprised to see cash only signs. We didn't care for the interior decor, but the service was friendly and our food came out quickly. We tried the New Brunswick Fish Fry - the fish and fries were just okay. Coleslaw and crab cake weren't very good, but the popcorn shrimp was yummy. We also tried the burger special that came with roasted red pepper on it. The burger tasted plain. The suicide wings we ordered were more of a medium spicy, but whatever they were seasoned with made them some of the best wings we have had, which is why I've rated this place a 4. The last time I was in a pub as cosy, atmospheric and cute as this was during my last trip to Warwickshire. I really felt like I could have been in Britain during my prolonged stay in this gorgeous little pub. It's super comfy, incredibly cosy (especially seeing as we had a window's view of the snow falling outside), small and intimate. Our server was really relaxed, friendly and genuine and explained all the menu specials and drinks really well. We had five hours to kill before catching our train back to Toronto and spent most of this time here. The staff were very welcoming (for the most part - one girl was a bit rude) and put no pressure on us to either leave or to keep buying food or drinks during that time. The first thing that jumped out at me was the really reasonable prices. A marked change from Toronto, and even some other places we looked at in Cobourg. My boyfriend had the Sunday special of a roast chicken dinner with brownie ice cream dessert, which came to just $14. I went for the British beef roast dinner, a huge portion which clocked in at $16 - not bad. They have menu specials every night of the week, with some amazing deals on wings, pitchers and appetisers. Bf was really happy with his choice, especially the gooey dessert, and I really liked my beef roast. The gravy was delicious and the vegetables were cooked perfectly. The two Yorkshire puddings on the side were also a really nice touch! The beef tasted good but had a slightly stringy and old looking texture and look. The bottom line is that it tasted fine, but the appearance put me off a bit. We followed up with a pint each and lingered in the cosy atmosphere looking out over the snow, whilst occasionally chatting to the staff, people watching the Cobourg locals and watching the tv. A really lovely experience and we would love to return. read more

The Cat and the Fiddle was recommended to me by the owner of a B&B where I was staying and they definitely understated how good it was. This is not your typical pub with greasy frozen food. Our meals were very fresh and all was homemade. I had a wrap with a salad and it was fresh and delicious and plentiful (Watford Wrap). The blue cheese crock to start was excellent. My companion had a Tony Blair (steal sandwich) that he said was very good. We had great service. The draft beer selection was also very good. I'd return in a heartbeat if I am back in he area. read more

Dropped in for dinner on our first night as new residents in Cobourg, the place is just a block away. Staff were extremely polite and we got to sit outside in their patio which is an extremely beautiful garden setting. My wife and I ordered, she had a chicken Caesar salad and I had the diastolic beef dip, and the food arrived quickly and we very good. This is an excellent neighbourhood pub and the staff were very attentive, especially considering there was a private function upstairs. read more

There are a number of lovely towns off of the Macdonald-Cartier Highway 401. Cobourg, Ontario is one of them. I found Yelp helpful in a search for a convenient and easy place with a fair menu range for a quick meal while travelling. The Cat & the Fiddle was central in town and had received good ratings. The atmosphere is classic British pub. Comfortable, clean, with classic decor including neat historical early 2Oth century photographs that are fun to take in. The menu can best be described as comfort food. Okay for the road. The serving staff recommended a cat fish special. A delicious choice. Service was courteous, swift, the meal was perfect. Gratis Wi-Fi also a plus. Clearly this establishment deserves it's positive write ups. read more

Terrible food service... first time here and from out of town. They only take cash too which is so inconvenient. Ordered a beer, the drink was quick and a london wrap. Had to ask the server after 1 hour of waiting if my food was coming and then she checked with the kitchen and they haven't even started it. I overheard the conversation as well. Decided to pay for my beer and go. Unacceptable for a simple wrap... wasn't the servers fault so still tipped her, not sure what's going on in the kitchen! Read positive reviews on here and was disappointed in how this turned out. Went over to the Ale House right after and got served a beer within 2 minutes and food within 10 minutes. I grew up in Cobourg, and the Cat & the Fiddle was a place I liked to frequent. However and unfortunately, it's changed ownership since then and it was a huge disappointment when I went in for lunch. I ordered the roast beef sandwich, and it was simply just not edible. The meat was thick and fatty, pale grey and barely warm. Served on a half-burnt, half soggy hamburger bun rather than a panini as the menu stated. Biting in this sandwich was like chewing rubber. The only thing remotely edible with my meal, where the deep-fried lattice fries, even though I only got maybe 7 in total. Overall this was a very unpleasant experience. It's a shame to see a local staple change this way. I will not be returning. read more

Being a lunch time guy I've tried many different menu offering but continually get drawn back to the " Giggler" it's a Buffalo chicken sandwich on a sour dough roll. Topped with Swiss cheese and other topping of your choice. Comes with a generous portion of fries. You won't leave hungry. Cat & the fiddle has stood the test of time for a reason. read more

The fiddle is my go to. I love the atmosphere, bathrooms are general nice and clean and the BURGERSSSS ARE DIVINE. I love the live music and great staff on a Friday night. It's a small space and can get rather crowded which unfortunately means waiting a bit longer for that third beer but it's always worth it. I'd take the fiddle over Frank's or Kelly's any day. read more

How bad can a burger be? Apparently bad enough to possibly poison me! I ordered a burger and it was entirely raw inside. And I'm not talking about undercooked raw. I'm talking about the not cooked, wet and soggy type of zombie raw. Fortunately, I spat it back out before swallowing it. And so I'll live to see another day! Fire the cook! How bad does a cook have to be to not have the competency to cook a simple burger? Is this restaurant not concerned about law suits? And so, the waitress takes the banished burger away for a fitting funeral and consoles me with another attempt at a meal. I ordered a simple club sandwich which proved to be another ordeal. Although cooked, the dryness brought on a fit of dusty coughing that I had to wash down with thin and flavourless gravy. There was nothing of any flavour with this sandwich at all. No seasoning, no mayonnaise, no care. If I didn't have a love for hospital beige-coloured food, there would have been no saving grace for this meal at all. I love hospital beige. How terribly, terribly disappointing this entire meal was. We travelled from Whitby specifically to eat at this pub but never will we return. Dusty sandwiches more fitting as a disaster zone or burgers more suitable for biological warfare? Hmmm...choices, choices....! read more
