We stopped in the Snug on a road trip back to Toronto. The feeling is cozy and comfortable, and the service was friendly and efficient. There's Irish music playing in the background, lots of character in this restaurant. We shared the 2 piece haddock and chips and was more than enough for me and my husband. It wasn't the most amazing fish and chips I've had in my life but tasted good. The fries were especially good. Each had a pint of Guinness, they were 8.50 a pint. A good pour! So this pains me to write this as I've spent a lot of time and money there..... I just got back from the Snug in Newcastle and I had a poor customer service experience. I've been coming to this pub for years now when I fly in to see family in Newcastle from BC. Myself and my girlfriend came in after visiting said family for a few pints and most likely some food. we spent a totally of just over 2 hours there. we came in and I ordered 2 pints over the period of an hour. I was going to order food anyhow, but our waitress out of nowhere that we would need to order food to have another pint. Ok no problem, but it was weird. We were lot loud at all. There were other louder tables with other families. We had polite discussions with the other staff there and everything seemed fine. I asked them politely if this was some Ontario law and the waitress replied that it was a house rule. I under stood and replied to her that I guess they have had problems with other in the past. she replied "everyone has a story.", which again was weird. No problems, I'm not an alcoholic. We ordered food and waited a while and it finally came. by that time it was about 2 hours being in there and I was thirsty again. I politely asked if I could have a Harp lager and she said "We will wait a while longer and we shall see" I felt like some kind of criminal. Again, myself and my lady were not loud and were polite the whole time. I only had 3 beers in total over that time. Ididn't cause a fuss and we ate our meal and paid and left because I'm not a piece of crap. why if someone isn't a problem and complied with their rules couldn't have another beer? In that time we were sitting there, Durham police came in for an issue not related to the pub and mentioned they had a staff party there where they were inhaling shots. The snug staff were also closing early to have a staff party where I heard some of them talk about all of the alcohol they would consume which sounded like more than the few brews I had. Oh well, I probably spend about a thousand dolars a year there when visiting family in Newcastle and no more. If you have some kind of house policy then it should be posted. I a writing this just after leaving there as again I feel like I was made to feel like a criminal. read more

Decided to grab takeout lunch here when we were in town after seeing positive reviews on Google. Food was ready quite promptly so it was nice and hot! It was cool to see Irish pub items on the menu. Definitely some stuff you don't find at other places. So while it was tempting to settle for usual pub grub, I wanted to try something new. I ordered the Irish pasties and my husband got the lamb burger. For the Irish pasties, the pastry was delicious however I was hoping for more corned beef inside. Felt like it was mostly vegetables in the stuffing. And my husband's burger was unfortunately missing its top bun! If I'm around I would probably go back and try again. I'd probably just order something else. Just glad that we were still able to support a local place while in town. read more

Stopped in here after a visit to Jungle Cat World and it was well worth it. It's decorated with a lot of eclectic items and the front section is quite small and cozy. We ordered the nachos and breaded shrimp. The portions were large and very filling. They definitely didn't skimp on nacho toppings. Each layer was coated in cheese and veggies. The shrimp came with fries and coleslaw. The service was fast and friendly. It's not far from the 401 so make a stop if you're driving through. read more

Excellent place to meet friends for drinks or dinner. Cosy, Irish and traditional pub fare. Great service in an eclectic atmosphere. This small town has only a few gems and this is one of them. Everything I've ordered is better than expected. Big portions and friendly service. Also, there is so much to photograph in here, absolutely worth a visit if you haven't been in. It's only a few minutes (4) off of highway 401 or 115, so if you are from out of town and looking for something in the way to somewhere else, pull over! read more

Seriously, stop in here and grab a bite to eat. You will not be disappointed. My family of 4 has been several times and have always had a great experience. The staff are extremely welcoming. The owner has been present each time and has stopped to say hello and make sure that everything is to our satisfaction. From what I've been told is that the desserts are all made in house and I can confirm that the sticky toffee pudding is absolutely delicious. Their house made Scabby Leg milk stout is my new favourite. Can't say enough good things about the Snug! Wish I lived closer. read more

The service I received here was amazing. The employees were very welcoming and friendly, as soon as I entered the building, I felt comfortable and eased. The food quality was also good. The portion sizes are perfect in my opinion. The outdoor patio is a great idea for during the warmer days during the summer or spring. Although, the outdoor patio brings unwanted guests as well, with the bikes flying by on the sidewalk, people walking or running by, the cars driving by and stopping. It's not terrible although it isn't ideal. I still do highly recommend this restaurant if you're looking for a cozy and friendly local snug. read more

previously had a 5 star review of this restaurant but my opinion has greatly changed. We we made a reservation for 5 for my dads 70th birthday ( which I expressed in the reservation). We sat down and the waitress began to take our order, Drinks were painful to order which was the start of this ordeal. I asked the price of the special and was told either $21 or $24. It was obvious she didn't care about our business. My husband had to get up to find another waitress to ask the price of the special . She rushed us the entire meal. She took my daughters chicken fingers away and she wanted them still. It's was awful. I was absolutely embarrassed to have my father there on his special day. He never even was wished a happy birthday. The only time she smiled was at the tip which she didn't deserve. The food was good. Traditional overcooked roast beef with great gravy. The pastry pot pie always delicious. The menu changed and they took off a lot of the great comfort food, . I will never go back. It is too bad . One of Newcastle's few local restaurants, it has everything you would expect of a small town pub but with some funky Irish flare. This gives the place a comfortable feeling and is also extremely cozy, so dressing up or down doesn't matter! Fantastic, awesome, great, terrific and many more positive notes on this restaurant on it's food and service and atmosphere. Hubby is a pilot, been to UK before and he said the Sticky Toffee Pudding was better here than over there!!! They were great, prompt and very helpful with our tablefull of 6 ppl (4 adults, 2 kids) Highchairs are available. We called ahead on Satuday afternoon for a reservation at 6pm. Menu is wide spread so it's bound to feed the picky eater. They gave both the kids a treat bag at the end even though my 9 yr old didn't order from kids menu. Very nice of them to do that! Very small restaurant, so larger groups might be possible with a bit of manuovering. So going again, new family restaurant. They also have a Sunday Brunch, going to check that out in a few weeks. Authentic pub that's a hidden gem. From the moment you walk in its like entering a pub in Ireland. Food was good for a pub and portion size was just right. I had the guiness stew. The reason for the five stars is that as far as an authentic, fun little pub goes, this is spot on and a great hangout spot. If you are looking to catch a big game on the tv then this is not the spot for you. But if you want to have a good time with some buddies over some drinks and food, this is it. Enjoy! read more

Any time I've had this dish anywhere, it's always come with gravy, but not here. Very stark and unappetizing. No salt or pepper at the bar, or offered. Super cute and authentic little Irish pub. My fiancée and I took our parents there shortly after we got engaged because it was right down the street from the venue we booked for our wedding. I work on the road for months at a time. It's hard to find good home cooked meals at a decent price, but the Snug did it. Amazing food, friendly staff and a calming atmosphere. It tables in the middle were a tad small to get your legs under and the door slammed right next to my ear for the whole meal, but other than that it was nice. I would not recommend this restaurant if you want good food and a clean place. I find the place itself if quite dirty and dusty, you can actually see dust floating in the air sometimes. I also find that the food is not the greatest compared to other places in the area with a much better menu and better food. We went with a group of friends and the wings were actually raw inside. The owner was not happy and gave vouchers to remedy the problem but that kind of thing is just not acceptable when it comes to food. If you just want to go listen to some entertainment and have a beer then it might be the place for you. read more
