I brought my senior cat here because I was concerned about swelling and suspected it might be an infection. I explained that I did not have the budget for expensive procedures or medications, but wanted general care advice and guidance. The vet's educated guess was that it could be a tumor, and I was advised to move forward with a fine needle aspiration (an expensive procedure) to get a clearer answer. After paying a significant amount, I was told to expect results the following Monday. I never received a call. By Wednesday, I called the office myself, only to be told they'd call me back. The next day, I received a call around 8:30pm (after hours, while I couldn't return it). When I finally reached them, I was told the results were "undiagnostic" meaning the sample collected was not useful. After days of waiting, stress, and tears, I had no answers and no offer to redo the test. The swelling in my cat has gone down somewhat, but I am still left without an answer on whether it's a tumor or something else. For the amount of money paid and the emotional toll involved, I am very disappointed with the lack of communication, the undiagnostic result, and no follow up care options. I've been too upset to even consider a second opinion anywhere else and waste my money there too. read more

Dr. Penny is one of those special people that you know was put on this earth to do good. A colleague of mine recommended this place and I must say, I have no regrets. After finding our kitten in the road on the verge of getting run over by traffic, Dr. Penny placed her healing hands and brought this kitten back from the brink of death. When we took her in to the vet, the kitten was so sick and we were warned that she may not make it through the night. She was covered with fleas, had an upper respiratory infection, and her eyes were crusted close with mucus. Today, she is healthy and doing well. Thank god for Dr. Penny. read more

I knew this place existed but was referred from some people in a cat group i am in on fb. My vet unable to do a full mouth extraction on my cat so i decided to make an appointment here with Dr. Penney. Her and her staff are wonderful. Very thorough with follow up calls before and after appointments. Everything explained in full My cat Sassy who is a fiesty one as her name suits her did wonderful with them. Her recovery was better than Dr. Penney has seen as instead of losing weight she gained a half a pound on her follow up visit! I highly recommend her! read more

I've been going to Dr. Penney since 2014. She is THE BEST. I've had cats all my life and the two most important things you need : having good pet insurance and your vet being able to recognize and diagnose any health issues. I've gone to many other vet clinics (before Dr. Penney) and have been shocked at how much other vets had missed. I will only take my cats to The Cat Doctor and of course any outside imaging sites as needed. Dr. Penney is thorough, if she recommends a CAT scan or any surgery, you would do well to heed her advice. I have found, through experience, that my cats really needed those imaging recommendations. Owning/caring for pets can be expensive. She was spot-on with noticing my cat Bruce had a heart murmur and needed a bi-annual CAT scan to dose him correctly for his heart murmur. She was also correct with recommending that my cat Paterson needed further imaging to find out what was in his stomach that was causing him to throw up food. Now I'm taking my new kitty to her. When I adopted him, he was underweight and sick, Dr. Penney diagnosed all hia ailments and he also had dental extractions to remove his rotting teeth that were causing him pain. Last summer, my otherwise healthy sixteen-year-old Julie seemed more lethargic and began vomiting. When I took her to a local veterinary, he threw us out of his office because she "scratched" him. When I asked if he wanted to put her to sleep or sedate her, he told me that she was sixteen years old and didn't see the point in doing so. I interpreted my cat's defensive behavior as a sign that she was aging and that my job was to keep an eye on her but let her live her best life. Three months later, she stopped eating, became lethargic, which caused me to advocate for her with the harsh veterinary. To examine her, he took a huge chunk of fur from her neck at the site of the needle inserted to anesthetize her, so she came home immobilized and for a week, on antibiotics and thyroid medication. However, Julie rebounded. While sharing my concerns about Julie to total strangers in a Syosset pet food store, they strongly recommended that I bring Julie to Dr. Penyy. Despite the distance from my north shore home to New Hyde Park, their endorsement was compelling. Dr. Penyy's office was and continued to be kind, professional and supportive. Dr. Penyy called me that day and assured me that there was no need to sedate Julie, but rather told me she would prefer to examine her "as she was" to find out how to best treat her. As with many cats, my feline diva was defensive during the visit, but Dr. Penyy comforted her as she drew blood and got a urine sample. She worked in tandem with her assistant while encouraging me to remain close by to comfort my cat. After each visit, I received a follow-up phone call from the staff to see how Julie was doing post-visit. Within days, Dr. Penyy called with the results of blood work with suggested treatment. I was shocked that Dr. Penyy called me on the eve of a significant holiday and remember telling her to get some "down time" for herself. As difficult as the last six months were, Dr. Penyy and I worked together to keep Julie as healthy and comfortable as possible despite her worsening kidney disease. A week and a half ago, she honored my decision to allow Julie to go peacefully to release her from her pain and suffering. Like many heartbroken owners, I agonized over the timing of my decision. Less than a week after euthanizing Julie, Dr. Penyy called me early in the morning on her first day back from a short hiatus and reassured me that I made the right decision. I can't praise Dr. Penyy and her staff enough for their professionalism, care, and compassion shown toward Julie. Julie was a very special feline companion, so I am grateful that she had the best care a pet could have with Dr. Penyy. read more

I just wanted to write a review on my very first visit at The Cat Doctor. My mom referred me to this practice. The staff was extremely accomodating after having to last minute cancel previously, then get me in within 2 weeks for both of my cats to be seen together. This was also my cats first time being in an office and the doctor and her assistant were fantastic with them. Not to mention one was extremely angry lol... they were so kind and offered me a plethora of resources, and information on how to care for my cats as they grow up. horrible experience. Dr. Penny, a wonderful vet, was off today. So today, we saw Dr. Soucci. We brought the cat in because he was limping and obviously his paw was hurting. While the cat was in the carrier in transit he somehow caught a nail on his injured paw on his collar. The cat was agited and in distress. A two step approach would have made sense. First, the cat's paw should have been extricated from his colar. Then the cat should have been allowed a few minutes to calm. (His medical records with Dr. Penny show him to have been a good patient.) Dr. Soucci escalated the cats distress by immediately having an assistant with protective gloves hold him down and hold a towel other his head. As a result, while she did trim the cat's nails, she got scratched in the process, and was not/or did not examine the injured paw. In our opion, a more thoughtful approach to treating the cat could have avoided this bad experence. read more

My emotional support animal was diagnosed on July 13th, 2022 with FLUTD-and was never given a prescription to purchase his vet prescription urinary wet cat food. This ongoing lack of prescription problem was resolved on my visit at The Cat Doctor on December 9th, 2022. My cat also had an examination to ensure that he is doing alright. I've never written a Yelp review before, but I was honestly blown away by the quality of service at The Cat Doctor. I have a three-month-old kitten (Taz) that I had never been away from for more than a work day before. She's my first cat, so when I realized I had to be out of town for five days and couldn't take her with me, I was really anxious about finding a good place to care for her while I was gone. The vet techs are all incredibly qualified as well as kind and compassionate -- when I dropped off Taz they made sure she was as comfy as can be, and that she was socialized with lots of the staff while she stayed there (I'm trying to get her used to people). When I dropped Taz off, they answered all of my questions, and even let me hang out and say goodbye to her for a very long time. I did not meet the veterinarian (Dr. Penyy) personally because Taz had her checkup while I was away, but she was incredibly thorough in her examination, and left me a voicemail detailing how it went as well as discussing the next steps in Taz's care, what appointments/vaccinations I need to schedule for her in the future, etc. Thoroughly impressed, and would love to meet her in person next time. Also, one thing I loved that the receptionists did while I was gone, is they sent little emails pretending to be Taz every morning, along with photos of her. This was a really thoughtful touch, and made being away from her easier. The receptionists are all very friendly as well. Important to note that there are also many different options for where in the facility to board your cat -- (a) "suites" downstairs, where each cat can get their own ROOM to itself; (b) different sized "condo" enclosures, some with places the kitties can climb, to keep them entertained; and (c) enclosures in the "treatment area", good for kitties that need socialization with humans and to be accustomed to new noises, because people are regularly going in and out of there during the day. I found The Cat Doctor on Yelp and decided to check it out after reading the reviews. I was looking for a place to board my cat for a few days. Before boarding, I set up a time for a check up for her and a tour of the boarding facilities. The customer service personnel present were nice and accommodating, offering coffee while we waited. Dr. Penyy and Sean were great with Mittens. They were gentle and told me what they were observing as they checked her out. The examination was thorough and allowed an opportunity for me to ask questions as well. After the exam, I was able to check out the various types of "rooms" available such as the double wide cage, the condos, and the private rooms. Seeing the cats that were already there made me feel comfortable with the treatment they were receiving. The center and cages were clean. In the end, I decided to board her there. Mittens stayed for 5 days. I received a few pictures and a video which made me feel at ease since this was our first boarding experience. Overall, I was happy with the experience. I look forward to working with The Cat Doctor in the future. read more

Amazing vet. They are extremely affordable and very easy to book an appointment with. Clean waiting area, I do wish they let you go back with your pets but I'm sure they'll change that rule soon now that the pandemic seems to be behind us. They give great care to all of their patients. Dr. Socci is the best, she called us and gave us the breakdown of everything going on and not once did we feel rushed. I got my cat from a shelter that also has a wellness center. I've always brought him there just because but would have to brace myself for hours of waiting and high vet bills, not to mention having to wait an average of 3 months just to get an appointment. I switched to the cat doctor and I regret not doing so sooner! The receptionists are on point - no waiting on hold for ages and they're super friendly and efficient. The visit itself was pleasant as well, the office is cozy and clean and their atmosphere is very welcoming. The doctor was very thorough during the check up and I even got a follow up call the next day to see how my cat is doing! Dr.Penny is such a kind and compassionate veterinarian I highly recommend bringing your kitty here. My Penelope became ill and I brought her to Dr. Penny. We were in the process of treating her illness but she took a turn for the worse during the week of her follow up visit on a Friday. I had to take her to the hospital on Sunday and Unfortunately my little buddy of 14 years passed on 3/19. Dr Penny called me on Weds to go over the report from the hospital veterinarian Dr. Diaz and walked me through the details and really made me feel allot better. She was very compassionate and took that time with me to answer my questions and was patient. I really appreciated that call. Dr. Penyy and her staff are simply amazing. Efficient, kind, profesional and every other positive adjective you can think of. THE DOCTOR: Dr. Penyy is incredibly knowledgeable. She can diagnosis simply from your explanation and then orders the proper tests and is right every time. She is not in any way an alarmist...does just the right amount of testing to confirm the diagnosis. I can tell you without naming names that we have sadly learned through experience this is not always the case with other practices. In addition it is her tenderness, love and understanding of cats that also sets her apart. Being a cat mama herself, she treats our babies like they are her own. Our one cat AJ isn't exactly a fan of going to the dr and she holds him like a baby and very calmly tries to smooth him as he hisses and growls in her face. Doesnt faze her in the least as she and her fabulous tech just want to make sure to calm him before an exam. THE OFFICE: Each person is just lovely and efficient! As a caretaker who deals with doctors offices daily, having an efficient office staff makes all the difference in the world. If they say they will call back...they call. If you need an emergency appointment...they get you in. Ask (but obviously be realistic) and they make it happen. NEED I SAY MORE: I drive close to 45 min in one direction to get to Dr. Penyy. That is 1.5 hrs round trip even if its simply to grab a medication. AND her days off are the same as mine meaning...its rather inconvenient for us and yet we still wont go anywhere else!!! I just had to write this review. I have been having issues with my cat for almost 2 weeks. Back and forth from my vet and 2 emergency vet visits. I needed another opinion because I was losing my mind. I called the cat doctor and they listened to my concerns. Went over my cats medical records from the hospital. From the staff who answered the phone to the doctor just amazing. I am not even their patient and they went out of their way for me. I called other doctors over the last few days that wanted nothing to do with me because they weren't getting money from the testing because I had it done already. I have been a cat lover for all of my life, and The Cat Doctor is by far the finest establishment I have taken my precious furbabies to. I travel frequently for work, and board my "heart cat," Glitter, there, every time. I love him more than anything, and The Cat Doctor is the only place I trust. In fact, Glitter loves it there so much that he sometimes doesn't want to come home! The medical care is the best, too. Dr. Penyy is amazing, and really knows her stuff. I think the fact that it is a "felines only" facility contributes to why Glitter is so partial to this facility (seriously, have you ever known a cat who actually LIKES going to the vet?), but I think the staff, Chrissy, Cristina, Carol, Sean, Tracy Ann, Sully, Nathalie, Clay, and Caroline have something o do with it, too. This my first Cat Doctor visit. My kitty was being really good on our way because I kept talking to him and reassuring him in the car but when we got there, he seemed really scared. The vet coaxed him out of carrier with 4 choices of treats, they were so gentle and loving and affectionate I couldn't believe it. (Honestly, I didn't get half the love from my ER nurse and doctor.) He needed blood work, shots and usual check up. They were so loving you would think it was their pet. They explained everything as they were doing it and were extremely knowledgeable. Also, they didn't advise you get unnecessary treatment or shots. Not only did they offer him treats, but the staff while you wait were pretty swell too. They had some treats for the owners too, ie coffee, home-baked cookies, chocolates....there is nowhere else I would go to for my kitty's care. read more
