When I saw Sticky Date Pudding on the dessert menu, I just had to get it. This was served with butterscotch sauce, candied walnut, and ice cream. What an indulgent, sweet, mouthwatering masterpiece! The Sticky Date Pudding was chewy, moist, with notes of caramel and warm spices. Walnuts added a delightful nutty crunch. I poured the butterscotch sauce over both the Sticky Date Pudding and ice cream, which brought everything together beautifully. Service was good. On my first visit I had a hearty lunch of fish and chips, which went great with the beer. Light and heavy at the same time. The kitchen was closed on my second visit, but if that happens while you're here there are tons of other great options nearby for food. On the weekend, this place gets busy, loud, and happy. Both experiences were worth the trip. For people that haven't visited lately, it's new ownership and staff so it's worth your time to try it again. My usual staples of soup and salad even were absent - no salads on offer and no Soup of the Day as advertised on the menu. Even the Pasta of the Day was smoked chicken. Our lovely Irish waitress, though thin on smiles, efficiently took our drinks orders and answered our questions about the food saying we could get the pasta without meat. Sounded uninspiring so I went for the Fish'n'Chips with unbattered panfried fish and mostly salad with just a few chips. I can understand why wait staff don't love me for for changing every bloody item in the dish but sometimes there's no choice. (Other times I just want what I want.) I have to say, all the food was great and my daughter's vegetarian pasta turned out to be delicious so I was wrong about expecting flavourless tomato sauce with veges. Overall I'd say this is an ok place to come for a meal, especially if you prefer the traditional meat-based dishes on offer here i.e. Beef Wellington, Rump Steak and the like. They showed us the modern architecture, focused on sustainability, public spaces, restaurants and bars, and vibrant marina living in this redeveloped harbor area, which had quickly become a destination for tourists and locals. From the Jellicoe Harbor Breakwater built in 2020 to calm the waters for race boats and supporting yachts since Auckland's Waitematā Harbor hosted the 36th America's Cup, we could clearly see the cruise port from where we disembarked and the city center. Geoffrey and Margaret insisted on showing us the waterfront and promised to take us to a seafood restaurant. We mentioned that we love eating seafood, but were "preserving" our stomachs for casual, comfort, or unfussy food because we had been eating gourmet cuisines over the past 17 days while in Australia and during our cruise. We were thankful that they understood our request and dropped us off at our hotel to freshen up for dinner while Margaret made the reservation for an early dinner. We returned to the Wynyard Quarter's waterfront to Swashbucklers seafood restaurant, where we immediately felt comfortable with the vivaciousness of the hostess and server. We started our meal with icy-cold Peroni beers while sharing the tasty steamed mussels and garlic bread. So an hour and 20 mins later I made it. And I needed a good beer. And they have me many to sample before making a choice. They even had Lagunitas. I was shocked to see that. And the other import was Guinness. So props to them. I did order the Steak and chips. With peppercorn sauce and blue cheese. It was a good steak. Made to order. Mid Rare. Yes. That's how I row. No greens here. I'll have to double up next time. But they did lead me in a direction for more drinks.
