Just checked in the hotel and came here before it got too late. The Depot had good reviews on Yelp so I tried it. It's about 15-20 min walk from the warf. It was busy so I was seated outside. They had overhead heat lamps so I was comfortable without a jacket one (this is in June). The menu is geared for sharing dishes so ordering for one is a challenge. I had the local Lagar on tap, 1 of each of the 2 oysters offered, and the NZ green-lipped mussels with chiriso. They also gave me a complementary pita triangles with hummus. Overall, everything was delicious. I could have gone for more oysters, but didn't want to overdo it. The mussel dish had 7 good size mussels so I was satisfied without feeling stuffed. My friends and I went there for my last day in Auckland. We went around lunch time and we were able to get seated very quick. The ambiance was still so chill and not as packed because it was early afternoon, which was nice. The staff again were super friendly and answered any questions we had. Sadly, we didn't get the fish sliders because they were sold out! But we did get some of the same dishes I had ordered before but got oysters as well. The oysters were fresh and tasty, especially with their vinegar sauce. My friends also loved the charred eggplant and a couple of them don't really eat eggplant. The crispy potatoes were so good! The truffle wasn't too overpowering and they were perfectly crisp. The steak was super tender and juicy and the wedge salad helps cut the fat and compliments the steak as well. Wow. Local bar vibe but with a very upscale menu. Sat at bar. Oyster professional was a joy to watch. Alex and Cody manage the bar as a great team. Well oiled machine. Impeccable service. Food was incredible. The mussels were delicious. Not what we are used to coming from the East Coast of the States but absolutely scrumptious. The Sole was also delicious and equally unexpected. Whole fish (including head) was perfectly seasoned and served with nicely grilled bread to soak up delicious drippings. Actually quite easy to eat. Separate fish from both sides of bones. Loved it!!! Had our first meal at Depot after arriving in Auckland, New zealand. The food was absolutely delicious. Every bite is unexpectedly delicious. We had falafels and the roasted eggplant. The first time we were in Auckland, we enjoyed our food here. I decided I had to go back. We sat outside, which was ok since we were directly under a heat lamp. We were given complimentary pita bread with hummus to start. The pita is grilled, but overly so- burnt. We ordered the kingfish sashimi. I thought it was clever using wasabi peas as a topping. It added spiciness and crunchiness. The fish itself didn't have much flavor. Next, we had the charred eggplant. It was more blackened than charred. The pinenut tahini and 'Good Joe' coffee syrup on the eggplant made the dish standout. I also liked the crispy shallots on top. Lastly, we ordered the grilled kahawai which comes with garam masala crispy potatoes. The ginger coconut sauce came in a separate container for you to pour over the dish. Once again, the sauce made the dish. The sauce on the fish made me think Thai, but the potatoes made me think Indian. I think this is a place everyone needs to check out if they're in Auckland. Wy wife and I were on vacation in Auckland and for our last meal after visiting Hobbiton, we walked around the corner to Depot. We sat at the bar and they had a pretty weak tap beer selection, no IPAs at all, it would have been a five star if the draft selection was better. Our bartender was great until he had to start training someone in, then we were forgotten. I ordered the sliced lamb tongue and the snapper sliders. They both came out fast and were both amazing. The tongue was nice and vinegary and the fish sandwiches were good sized for sliders and the aioli was perfectly blended with the sea creatures. We stop by here every time we visit Auckland. The Depot never disappoints! We grabbed a quick bite here as we also wanted to leave room to try other foods. A must for us are the fish sliders and the bone marrow. Their fish sliders are so good. I think they changed out their white fish to snapper but the overall taste is still so good. 1 order includes 3 sliders. Buns are buttered, fish is cooked to perfection, not dried. Lemon aioli added another dimension. Bone marrow was good. Included 3 pieces and topped with sliced baguette and salad. Good vibes here as it was a packed house. We were seated at the kitchen bar and watched the staff cook. They all really seem to enjoy their job. Good vibes in the kitchen too! This place is connected to The Grand Sky City. I arrived late on a Mon night at 8:30, but they were able to squeeze me in before the Kitchen closed at 9. I was surprised to hear such an early closing time, but as i was to learn during my week here in Auckland, that is normal for most places. Also surprised because the place was fully packed. Anyway...I saw crispy pork hock on the menu, so order that. Wow, it was perfect. Nicely crisp skin and melt in your mouth meat. This experience was unacceptable and reflects extremely poor management and service standards. We arrived early and were clearly told to wait 30 minutes outside, despite multiple empty tables visible inside the restaurant. We accepted this without complaint. Shortly after, other customers who arrived after us were allowed to go straight inside and sit at the bar. When we politely asked why the policy was not applied consistently, staff could not provide a clear explanation and instead responded with dismissive and unprofessional behavior. One staff member even placed menus on an empty table and said we could sit but were not allowed to order, which was both confusing and disrespectful. Rather than resolving the issue, staff repeatedly attempted to pressure us into canceling. The problem here is not waiting time -- it is the inconsistent rules, poor communication, and lack of basic respect shown to customers. If there are different seating policies, they should be explained clearly and applied equally to everyone. For a restaurant with such a strong reputation, this level of service is disappointing. Management should seriously review staff training and customer treatment. I will not be returning. read more

Best restaurant in downtown Auckland recommended by locals and tourists alike. For starters we ordered a dozen of oysters, they were extremely fresh and had a nice, creamy taste. Later came the main course of slow cooked lamb shoulder, it was richly roasted, wrapped in a deep fried breadcrumb skin along with thick gravy. We also ordered the cod sliders, however they well highly overrated, which might be because it took too long to come out. I'm so glad that we got to eat at Depot especially since it was on my list of places to try in Auckland. We got to enjoy it twice for brunch and for linner :) The first time we went the oysters weren't ready yet and we were on a time crunch, but we ordered the bone marrow (amazingly generous!) and the sliders. Perfect as we were on the move and weren't going to eat for a while. The second time we went we were able to enjoy the oysters and the charred eggplant. Both were also tasty. Nothing we had here disappointed. The service was great. The servers were nice and friendly. The ambiance was also fun. I especially loved some of the framed artwork in the hallway which were hilarious. I also loved their music selection. It was perfect from beginning to end. Thank you, Depot! read more

You know what I love about eating in New Zealand? No pretense. F$&!ing amazing food, fair prices and no one announcing it was all locally sourced, etc, etc. This place personified that times 10. We sat down and immediately were given a white bean hummus appetizer with warm pita, and I suspect fennel pollen on the hummus. Delicious, warm and set the time. I got a 500 ml of sauvignon blanc ( from the tap) and husband got a lager. Both came in mini pitchers/ carafes. The American in me loved my ice water( with a lot of ice!!!) served in metal cups. Then came the food. We started with the small charcuterie board -omg. No run of the mill meats here. Popcorn duck tongues! Rabbit mousse, beef-prosciutto style, and 3 other smoked meat products, plus perfect cornichons, a cranberry relish and fig bread I will dream about. The burrata and tomato salad was very cold, perfectly seasoned, and had so much flavor. Enjoyed the crispy croutons on top for the texture change. Delicious and so fresh tasting. Ok, back to meat. Then came the bone marrow and lamb ribs. My husband LITERALLY sucked the bones dry of marrow. Salty, fatty happiness on a plate. Odd note - the parsley salad was the most flavor I've ever noticed in parsley. A nice herbaceous counterpoint to the marrow. The lamb ribs were pretty heavily seasoned, kinda middle eastern-ish flavor. Served with a skordalia mashed potato. The meat was fall-off-the-bone tender. Incredibly flavorful! I thought we were done eating, but nope - onto dessert! Buttermilk panna cota with strawberries and crispy fry bread nuggets. I'm not a dessert person but this was so well balanced I had two whole bites! Bowl was (again) basically licked clean. In total the meal was $160 NZD. And worth way more. Great service, great food and a friendly atmosphere. Sad note: We also got here at 8:45 pm and they had just run out of oysters. So get there earlier if you want to try those. What an awesome spot, I am so glad I had the opportunity to dine here while in town for business. The place itself is very Brooklyn hipster/trendy/fun and I've been told if you arrive any later than 6:30, you have to wait hours to get a table. Luckily we arrived before 5:30 and were seated right away. My co-workers arrived earlier than I did and started with 6 large oysters. After that, we ordered the hapuka sliders with pickled lemon mayo (absolutely fantastic, I could have eaten 100 of these mini sliders, they were incredible); shaved ox tongue with mustard custard, parmesan and horseradish (this one didn't seem to be a favorite at our table, I didn't try it, but I did try the mustard custard which was very salty); and the hapuka belly (apparently this is a NZ fish, for those of you who aren't from the area) with eggplant kasundi, lime and toast (very unique dish, the fish is served as half a fish on the bone and served with an Indian style eggplant that you put on toast and make little sandwiches out of...it packed a lot of flavour). My one gripe, they serve wine in regular cups, not wine glasses, which always drives me insane. I get the whole funky, hipster, chill vibe, but can I PLEASE have a wine glass? Wine just doesn't taste the same without it! I digress... Moving on...make sure you save room for dessert. Holy crap was the dessert fantastic. My coworker reckoned that we needed to order the sugar pie and it did not disappoint. I don't even like pie and I was licking the plate. The sugar pie custard just melts in your mouth, it's like eating a sugar pillow. Oh my. We also ordered a chocolate chip cookie concoction served in a skillet with vanilla ice cream and chocolate syrup on top. Stop it...this $hit was absolutely incredible. Being in Auckland for the first time, I was relying on Yelp on helping me decide where to eat and this was not a disappointment. Its a convenient place near the sky tower. The menu was not extensive but everything on there sounded interesting. We ended up getting the charcuterie plate as well as the lamb ribs. We also got these complimentary pita bread with some sort of spread as well. The charcuterie contained fried duck tongue, rabbit, wild board salami, another pork and beef slices as well as some bread and a berry sauce. The bread was refillable so you can get more bread if you like. It was an interesting dish and everything tasted delicious. The lamb ribs though we're probably my favorite. They were tender, has a Mediterranean spice rub and went very well with the mashed potatoes. Service was ok, I like that when they brought out the charcuterie dish, they explained what each dish was. The server was attentive. Price was decent. Overall it was a good place and if I can come back, I would definitely try the sliders and other interesting things they had on the menu. read more

This place doesn't allow reservations but we were seated quickly, despite the dining room being full. It's a lively and TIGHT dining room so if "personal space" is your thing, this isn't a place for you. The 4 tops along the wall are tiny and you can barely move your arms while eating and other people's backs will be nearly touching yours. HOWEVER, with all this being said, the FOOD, DRINKS and SERVICE are exceptional, so much that it negates the negatives! Our super friendly, ginger waitress was well versed in both the food and drink menu and her service was impecable...she's one of the BEST wait staff we've ever experienced in a long time. Depot was one of our first stops in New Zealand and it set our expectations pretty high for the food in this country! The two of us were seated in front of the kitchen on a Wednesday evening around 6pm and what a treat it was getting to watch the chefs prepare and cook all the food! The atmosphere was chill, yet romantic, with a bar being offered as well. The two of us ordered the small charcuterie, complete with wild rabbit paté, fried duck tongues, wild pork salami, prosciutto, breads and crackers and a few other complimenting meats and pickles. The dish was $29 and well worth it. We thoroughly enjoyed each of the offerings from the charcuterie and I would highly recommend it. We also ordered two small plates to share. The turbot sliders and the lamb ribs. The turbot came with 3 sliders and were amazing. The fresh fish combined with the lemon mayo spread on top of the Hawaiian roll made for a great bite. The lamb ribs were flavored with cumin paprika oil and absolutely devine. Both dishes were like a flavor punch to the gut! Overall a fantastic meal to start a trip to remember! I would recommend coming a bit on the early dinner side to avoid the wait (there was a queue when we left around 7pm). It seems like you really can't go wrong with whichever dish you choose. read more
