The last time I visited this establishment, it was known as The Toby Jug. It was also know for it's bad food & even worse service. And disgusting toilets! Enough said.
I recently attended a course on Amelia Earhart Place, Airport Oaks - conveniently situated right around the corner. Our Course Director had advised that we should bring our own lunch as it wasn't provided, but I had other plans. I arrived at the Post Office shortly after midday, the time I was advised their restaurant opened, but already there was a table of 3 seated & eating. The young waiting person who greeted me smiled so broadly I thought for a moment that I might know her - but no. I found out during the course of my meal, that is precisely how she greeted every customer coming through the door. An excellent start.
I was handed a small but comprehensive menu to peruse. The fare was standard - fish, steak or chicken prepared a number of ways with salad or hot vegetables as an accompaniment. Snack type food also featured - handy for the locals who only have a 1/2 Hour for lunch. I had also noticed a blackboard menu by the entrance listing the Special Of The Day: Seafood Fettuccine. I ordered the fettuccine & a soda, lime and bitters "with a twist". My drink arrived, exactly as requested, and not too far behind, my meal.
When you order seafood in a meal, expect the standard - a single king prawn, single smoked mussel, a couple of calamari rings & a few shrimp. This meal had triple the above ingredients- with the addition of salmon fillets. I would have given this meal a 5/5 but for the presentation. Bean sprouts do not make a decorative garnish - a few basil leaves strategically placed or even a sprinkling of chopped parsley would have made this meal perfect! The taste was wonderful, I literally relished every mouthful!
When I returned to my course for the afternoon session, I regaled all & sundry about my meal. The guy from Air New Zealand looked absolutely crestfallen - he had gone to the Food Bar on Brigade Road and bought a mince pie!! He swore he is going there for a meal, I made the same oath to return there too!
nota bene: The local office workers phone their lunch orders through so that their meals are ready & on the table when they arrive, hence the people already eating when I arrived. More excellent service from The Post Office. Oh, and the bathrooms - spotless of course! read more
