Having recently moved to Houston, I've been looking for a missing piece to truly make it feel like home- a place to call my local drink spot. Last night, I found it at The Cellar Bar. When Gary Portnoy wrote about that place "where everybody knows your name," I'm pretty sure he was thinking about a spot like this. Seriously, the bartenders legit take the time to get to know your name, a bit of your story, and introduce themselves. I personally enjoy a drink more when it comes with good conversation, and this place is doing it right. The setup is great: grab a seat at the wood bar, chill with friends at the booths or high tables, dominate on the pool or foosball table, and let the inner child come out on the boxing or big buck arcade games. The drink menu is on point: lots of local beers, standard domestics as well; and don't miss out on the bartender inspired cocktails. They've got specials throughout the week and generous happy hours- as if I needed more excuses to roll through! Last night I met Luis and Heidi, and look forward to meeting the rest of the barkeeps the next time around... because let's be honest, I'll be back for sure. read more

The Cellar Bar is nice. We visited this spot last Friday and had a great night! The place is pretty nice maintained, clean and well kept. Here you can find a pool table, virtual bowling, darts, booths and tables, so you'll definitely find a way to have fun. I hate when jukeboxes take money! Why wouldn't they make it free? Anyway, their music is ok, even though not every track is available. Their drinks are cheap and point-strong. Overall, great spot, so here you go with 4 stars. read more

"I love this bar, it's my kind of place, Just walkin' through the front door, puts a big smile on my face..." This bar gets five stars because it is what is - nothing more, nothing less. We first found ourselves at the bar our first week in Houston (about seven months) ago and had a great bartender named, Ryan. He shared some conversation, a drink and some laughs with us and though we frequented only a few times a month after that he has always remembered our names when we return - and our drink! This bar has a large screen with Wii, pool tables, bar games, and a jukebox. Trivia on Mondays, Karaoke on Fridays and drink specials all the time. We typically get the $7 pitcher of Lonestar. Rather inexpensive and when it's just a stumble home, you can afford to get a little silly. You can't get food from the bar but you are welcome to bring some in or get some delivered to you there... We've always had a great time at this bar and I anticipate you'll find us there more often now that we've rediscovered this neighborhood gem. read more

I've been going to Cellar for over a year and a half semi-regularly to rock the Karaoke mic ;) (ON FRIDAYS) The crowd always seems a mix, people 3x my age or on the opposite end of the music spectrum, but friendly! It's been under new management for a couple of months now and seems to be pretty much the same. Minus a few changes in the layout that is. I'm not too sure why Matt H. thinks I'm pathetic for going here on a Friday night - my friends and I usually have a great time here, ON FRIDAY. *shrug* I guess he has moved on to greener pastures, or should I say grayer, in NYC. First off, I want to say that Luis is easily in my top 5 of bartenders in Houston. Secondly, this is a nice spot to drop in from time-to-time for, of course, great drinks, great service, friendly folks, and did I mention they have karaoke on the weekends? I used to come here more about four years ago, but no started coming out more recently. Besides what was mentioned above, they also have games such as a pool table, Big Buck Safari, foosball table, a big screened bowling video game, and darts. Go those who enjoy variety in their social settings - besides the games - one could be socially open and sit at the bar, have a group of friends and sit at a table, or stand when there's a large crowd. My experience is that the outside area is great for those seeking to have a more open group experience. I've met some cool people out there. YOLO! read more

Nice little dive bar. This bar is just divey enough without being sketchy. I got great service here. Yes, I went on a Monday night, so there were not many people there, but the bartender came by to check on us within minutes of either one of us finishing our drinks. On Mondays, there are happy hour prices all day, free pool and different specialty shots on special every night. I will be coming back, maybe on a different night. Mondays are rough. read more

Okay, so I admit we weren't sure what to expect of the place, but we are new to the area and figured we had nothing to lose. Started out: low light (picture yourself in a cellar), next to the cabaret joint, and seemingly no one inside (ended up being one person beside the bartender)...and Dave Matthews Band is blaring from the inside? We have a drink, play a game of pool for a buck (we're from Boston...not too many bars actually have this feature--they also have a Wii, a couple dart boards, and Karaoke on Fridays...more on that later...ha), and contemplate staying or leaving now that we are the only ones there. The bartender seems cool and has been playing some good music, so we decide we'll stick and stay for one more round and maybe get some more info about the place...that's when he lets us know the pitchers of Lone Star are 6 bucks...yeah we might be here for a while... Aaaand we were. An unspecified number of pitchers later, some Tuaca (not much of a fan), American Honey, and some Karaoke-ing by Kelly we were in a pleasant mood to say the least. This place is so sketch. First off, it's hard to find. Then, right before last call, a bunch of old people come in stumbling over themselves and spilling the alcohol they buy all over themselves and the ground. The drinks weren't too pricy, which is always nice, but the crowd is kind of weird. When I went up to karaoke with my friend, some lady in the front started taking pictures and saying, "Oh y'all are just too cute!" which shows the age difference between us and the rest of the crowd. read more

Stopped by here cause it was close to the hotel I was staying at. At first I didnt know what to expect, with it being next to a strip club and all. But I have to say I was pleasantly surprise. Atmosphere was definitely divey. There was karaoke going on and that usually deters me, but the "regulars" werent that bad and actually entertaining. The staff was friendly and professional, but I thought the drinks were a bit weak and pricey for this place to be a true "dive". But I had fun and I would come here again. We saw this place after having dinner. We didn't want to end the night after our meal, so we went there. It was pretty dead at first, but I liked that while it wasn't quiet, I could still talk with and listen to my friends with no trouble. My friends had mixed drinks, and they were very happy with their selections. To our surprise, it was a karaoke night. Many people were able to participate, and the karaoke dj was awesome. He was funny, friendly, and made sure everyone got their songs--people are treated individually, not as a table. The clientele was a mixed bag, good selection of different ages, orientations, everything. It was very fun, I would definitely go back, and I'd recommend The Cellar Bar to anyone who likes to karaoke without pressure or having to listen to a dozen sad and annoying ballads by people who are having an unplugged moment. (Also, the sound quality is very nice, never too loud or screechy, just right to make everyone sound pretty good.) It has a quirky element that you'll find at your favorite dive bars--you never know who you might see, and something strange might happen, but the vibe is pretty fun and relaxed at the same time. read more

A good selection of beers on tap and in bottle. We got here early on a Friday afternoon and were pretty much the first ones there. Actually we went in at 3:30pm but they don't technically open until 4pm. It got crowded by about 6pm. Location is good for people coming from downtown or West U / Galleria. read more

Not a bad place to stop and visit. I'm an avid golden tee player, and their machine was basically unplayable. At $5 a game, it sucks to have to waist it not knowing how bad the track ball is. Also, not having Jack Fire or fireball was a buzzkill, but the experience itself was great! I would go back for sure. read more

Cool little spot. Stopped in for a quick drink. Bartender JP is on his game. He was well versed in his beer and spirts selection. Cool thing is that us IPA and wine drinkers are able to identify the hops and types of grapes used in wines. He knew the answers to the questions we asked him. Well done JP. My favorite bar in Houston hands down, very laid back and comfortable place to have a drink or a few! Justin, Angelique, and Lee are the best bartenders! They are very friendly and welcoming. I love when you go somewhere and they actually pay attention to what you like and give you good suggestions. I've never had a drink I didn't like here, and they come up with their own creative specialty cocktails as well!! Free Game Friday is my favorite time to come, even when they get a little busy they are still very attentive to everyone unlike some other places I've been to. read more

This bar is the absolute best, it defines the 'neighborhood bar.' I recently moved to Houston and went in to The Cellar one of my first nights at my new apartment (which is conveniently located about 200 yards from the front door). I ordered my usual "generic bar drink".. gin and tonic. The bartender was friendly and efficient. I thought 'sure, great...seats at the bar, nice atmosphere, cider on tap. This will be a nice little neighborhood bar.' THEN, I went back in about a week later...and that's when I really fell in love. I walked in, the same woman was behind the bar, and she looked at me and said "Hey Maria. Gin and tonic?" I thought 'What. the. F***. How in God's name did this woman remember my name AND the drink I ordered. She must be a witch.' I now know this fantastic woman as Julie, and between her, Ryan, and Luis there is no better bar crew in Houston (the new girl is great too, but God help me if I can remember her name...) Anyways, this place rocks. It draws a diverse crowd of young professionals and old-school bar dwellers alike...always someone interesting to have a chat with. There's a sweet patio, great drink specials, and a bundle of addictive games scattered about. An awesome bar for a regular or just when passing through. read more

This is a cool spot in the middle of a pretty chill business district... it's a very local vibe and fairly busy every week night that I've been there. Great little neighborhood bar! That's what you should come here expecting! Friendly staff, awesome handmade drinks, games and a juke box.. Prices are great and it's a cool place to chill and hang out and chat with friends! The ruby mule was delicious! The owner/manager even came to introduce himself and welcome us and gave us a free drink card for next time cause he hasn't seen us there before! I've been here a bunch of times.. I don't think they do karaoke on the weekends anymore, which is a bummer.. But it's still a cool place to hang out for good drinks at good prices! Came across this neighborhood bar Tuesday night after USA lost against Argentina... Since I'm a Google expert I searched for the closest thing that would serve us some liquor at 1am & Cellar Bar popped up. I was a little hesitant at first... I still had on my work clothes & smelled of beer (I'm a bartender) and wasn't sure what kind of place this actually was. I walked in the door & saw Anthony so my mind was a little more at ease. Anthony greeted us from behind the bar & as soon as we sat down he took our order. Travis was also behind the bar and took our second round order. These guys are absolutely the BEST!!! If you've read any of my other reviews, you know I'm big on customer service & these guys deserve a raise... Not only are they attentive but also very entertaining!!! The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because of the liquor selection. Not a bad selection but just not our usual. If you are ever in the area, give them a try!!! read more

Was a little disappointed. I went there because I though there would be karaoke but there was not...Or maybe I went there the wrong night. Anyways they have a small dance floor where some chicks were trying their best moves already (it was 11 pm). It didn't take long to get drinks(I have to say that it didn't ave much alcohol in it), the music was mostly techno and alternative. They have some pool tables but that is not really my cup of tea. Went to the bar on a Wednesday night around 9pm! Found a parking spot on the side of the street pretty easily, but I can see how parking would be a bit of a problem if it gets busy on weekend nights. I liked how there were gas lit candles at each table. Has some games including billiards and darts. Great service!! My friend and I were playing darts the whole time and we were always asked every 20 minutes or so if we needed anything. Great & chill atmosphere. Had a huge projection of tv so that would be cool for sports events or anything else big on tv. read more

I really like this place. It's small and somewhat divey... But doesn't have a grungy feel to it that some dive bars do. It's your quintessential neighborhood bar. It's clean, the bartenders always friendly, and they have cheap pizza. Granted... I think this may be frozen stick-in-the-oven-to-reheat pizza. But it's still pretty good, and the price for it makes up for it. I like going here, and would suggest you give it a try too, if you want a semi-quiet bar with a friendly vibe :). I'm obsessed with this bar! The cellar has become my neighborhood bar and my friends and I are here all the time. Every time we walk in the door we are greeted by name and a strong drink. :) It really is a great bar because they have something for everyone.
