Owned by both Landlady and Landlord, they do their best to make you feel welcome. There's often a strange mix of clientele, from the very young to the very old, but everyone appears to be having a grand old time all the same. For sports lovers, there's the informal sports bar upstairs with screens, but be sure to get there early to nab a leather sofa. The Orange Tree has a great selection of draught beers as well as real ales, and the food hearty and includes a very pocket-friendly daily special including pie day, fish and chip day and steak day, all under £5!

It's one of those pubs that has obviously been lovingly cared and built on for a number of years. The food is good old fashioned pub grub like home made steak and ale pie, rump steaks, baguettes and a good selection of salads. They even have a resident ghost! who has been the subject of interest for ghost hunters, regulars and visitors alike..... Apparently he is a monk who likes chanting! They have a small beer garden to the rear, there is also seating out the front facing out onto Altrincham old market square, most of the buildings here are some of the oldest in the town. There is also a sports bar inside where they show all sports .. you name it, they probably will air it. A peaceful, privately owned and traditional pub!

It's tucked away off a main street with only a little sign to identify it by - but it's well worth searching for. By the time you've descended the stairs you feel like you're in a different country - definitely not what you'd expect to find in a basement in Altrincham. There only ever seems to be one person serving, but that's all you need in this place. And she certainly knows her stuff! It's table service, so you get plenty of time to study the extensive menu. Although sometimes I feel a little overwhelmed by choice and can sense the impatience growing in the waitress - so I often go for whatever she recommends on tap. It can be expensive, but if you like beer and you're not afraid of choice - then you should definitely give it a visit.

After starting in Belgian Bar (see review http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/belgian-bar-altrincham) it was thanks to the trusty Yelp bookmark app...and the small wooden A-board outside, that we found the Impasse de la Fidélité where the unassuming entrance is and headed down below street level. At the bottom of the stairs you duck under a thick velvety curtain and into the darkened bar (I'm not joking, it's really dark in there). You'd expect to be greeted by Morticia Addams or Elvira, Mistress of the Dark such is the creepy, yet inviting atmosphere. I was hoping Thing would scuttle out from behind the bar. After several minutes your eyes get used to the low light levels and it actually becomes fairly visible down here, so you can check out the quirky paraphenalia. And so to the beers. With a small number on draught (mostly Belgian), the bulk of their offerings comes bottled. You'll be spoilt for choice with beers from Belgium, Austria, Germany, The Netherlands, Scandinavia and the UK. We lost two, possibly three hours in this place and had some truly gorgeous choices (the highlight was 'Cuvée Van De Keizer Blauw (Blue)' from Brouwerij Het Anker in Belgium). So much so that after we left we bought some bottles to take home from Bier Cell (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/bier-cell-altrincham), which is also owned by the owners of MS. This place is now firmly in my Top Three all time favourite drinkeries in the country.

A small but perfectly formed pub only a stone's throw from Altrincham Market House, it's a great choice if you don't want to face a sea of people. There are actually two floors, so it's not as small as you first think on entering. The staff are warm and welcoming, offering suggestions if you're uncertain what to choose. They've always got something good on their few draught pumps, but don't be discouraged from trying a bottle from another part of the world - check out their eclectic international menu first. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are pots of complimentary peanuts for customers. A sales ploy I'm sure, but I love those small gestures, it makes me love the place even more. Alongside Belgian Bar, Mort Subite and Riddles, with Jack In The Box and Reserve (inside Market House), Altrincham now has a seriously enviable 'drinks quarter'.

As with Chorlton, there's a real neighbourhood bar element to this place and upon arrival the barmaid and one of the customers were having a good chat about the newest beers on offer from a great selection of breweries such as Camden, Brooklyn and some sweet looking Belgium options. I literally had 30 mins to spare before zooming off to my meeting but was hungry like the proverbial Duran Duran wolf so made a quick decision to have the tasty Matador pie (chorizo, beef, butterbeans, potato and olives) with a tasty side of minted mushy peas and homemade mash. The pie was amazing and in all came to £6.95 which I don't think was too bad for fodder of such quality! Pi is quickly becoming one of my favourite Manchester bars and I can't wait to get back here or Chorlton soon to try out some of their beers. Wunderbar!

In fact upon entering the girl on the counter apologised for the lack of stock due to the Christmas rush - if this was a poor selection then I'm a monkey's uncle and it would put many other off licences to shame. One thing that was noticeable was that they were very heavy on traditional Belgian beers and while a large part of the shop was dedicated to European imports, there was still plenty of room for a good selection of local craft breweries. I was particularly impressed to see them stocking real rarities and Brewdog was well served. Most of these beers were ones that I had only ever seen on the BD website before and they even stocked this years prototype beers which again was pretty cool for a high street store to be doing. Prices as well were pretty reasonable with only maybe a small mark up on what I'd normally expect to pay. This isn't a problem when you find a great independent business who have obviously gone to the effort to make their shop something special. On top of these beers, they also sell quite a few "beery gift packs" - the type where you get a glass with a bottle of something rare making this place perfect to pick up a present for those who are no nonsense hop fiends! Overall if you want good beer then go and check them out. Pi is just across the road if you want to then go and enjoy a beer out of the bar and a heartwarming pie for lunch or dinner!

The size of the shop is deceptive it looks as if it should go back another 6 foot. From German beers to Belgian beers and the local northern breweries it has stocked there is small selection. The shop is not very big but products are laid out nicely, one thing that would be nice to see would more of the continental beer accessories like you see in Europe. I didn't get to try the food or even see the menu but there's an impressive looking kitchen so hope to return for that at some point (actually have now found menu online and as well as a grill they have a big sushi menu!!) Drinks wise, they had Antica Formula vermouth! The bartender had NO IDEA what it was or how to serve it but we quickly got the ice/lemon/appropriate glass sorted and although it might seem expensive at £4.50 for 50ml it's a good alternative to wine for an aperitif. Prosecco was £22 a bottle which wasn't bad either. I thought the ale selection was a little limited although and I couldn't work out what the microbrewery aspect was (curiously they only seem to have a wine menu even though they have an extensive amount of fancy sprits which you can't see properly). As the evening (Saturday) wore on it became increasingly busy and uncomfortable to sit at the bar with people bashing past you to get their order - they probably need to move some of those chairs on busy nights (/you might want to try another option - amazingly the market was actually quieter by that point!).

Tucked away from the main streets of Altrincham in a courtyard in the Goose Green area of town, its the brewery tap for local brewers Dunham Massey (their head brewer is called John Costello - so all became clear). Seven hand pumps serve a variety of their beers starting from only £2 a pint - awesome! They also offer ciders and perry as well as your typical full bar drinks list. It looks as though the bar took over a modern retail unit, as it's got a fairly minimal interior lacking somewhat when compared to older, more characterful boozers. They're definitely more steered towards the fan of a pint than a Cosmo cocktail it must be said, but when we were there it was bustling with all sorts of drinkers. The other bars on the courtyard can mean it gets a bit rackety of a weekend if you sit outside, but the price and quality of the beers on offer far outweigh that.

I've always been with large-ish groups and had no problem fitting everyone in. It is busier than a lot of places I've been outside of town, so that's probably testament to its popularity. Price wise, its pretty reasonable. I usually have wine - sometimes red, sometimes rose, and always enjoyed the choice. It seems to have a good choice of beer/ales/lager (I don't really know the difference between them) and the beer drinkers in the group seemed happy. They do also sell spirits etc but I think it is aimed at beer drinkers (a bit like Port Street Beer House in town really). Definitely recommend this place when out in Altrincham.
