This is one of my fave bars I love the feel of the bar it's really relaxed and chilled out. I like the cherry beer here I always have this when I go. My partner likes to try the different beers they have. I think the decor is great it's a bit dark but it's great if your in manchester in the evening or weekend as it doesn't get too busy but always has a great atmosphere.It's a little hidden unless you know it's there you would prob walk past, you have to spot the sign and go down some steps it's defiantly worth a try. read more

I absolutely love Gas Lamp. I have spent many a good hour here. The tiles, the beers and the odd portrait of a long haired naked man in boots, all create the atmosphere. It gets a little busy at times but the crowd is always friendly. Look out for their guest beers... Never a let down. One tip though, if meeting friends... Make sure you do so in advance as phone signals are non existent down there. .. and I love it for that reason. read more

I really enjoyed this basement bar. It's a bit hidden and has a few different areas, we just sat in the main bar. For a Sunday night it was pretty busy and some nice people moved to give us space to sit together which was really nice. I had a chocolate sazerac which I wouldn't normally drink but I actually really like it. Sure it was super strong and I was pretty drunk already but it was a winner. I was first introduced to the Gas Lamp only recently, which is something of a surprise given that I must have walked past the door at least once a week for the last five years. Part of the reason for this almost unforgivable oversight is that it's so very, very easy to miss if you don't know that it's already there. A discreet brass plaque is affixed to the wall outside, something that might actually be more at home outside a solicitor's office, is pretty much thee only indication to the outside world that here is a place that you can buy beer. Down some stairs, you find the main bar, which is deliciously decked out in enamelled brick tiles which takes you to a long forgotten time. Or, as my eternally morbid drinking partner commented 'like a morgue'... Don't worry though, whatever the history of the building, what you'll find here now is good and fresh. I am, of course, talking about the beer! The selection of draft ales isn't particularly wide, but what they do have on is good. I had a very nice pale ale,and my friend went for a Kreik. I've not had one of those for a while, but it was enthusiastically described as 'very fruity' (she doesn't have a way with words). It's a cosy place, with an old fashioned stove (which must make it extra cosy in winter), and the general feel is one of comfort. I'll definately be making my way back, especially now that I know it's there" Finally, for those of you who are permanantly connected to the internet, don't worry about being underground. I've been wanting to go to the Gas Lamp for ages and finally dragged my ice-cream filled belly there last night where I sensibly chose a Turkish Delight martini to counteract the sweetness and general excess. The martini did not taste particularly alcoholic (as my latest favourite drink is a Vesper my palate is more accustomed to delicious window cleaner) but definitely tasted of Turkish Delight and was in general pretty good and an acceptable price at £7. Cocktails here are slightly more expensive than some of the better value places in the NQ but not outrageously so. Rana M also had a delicious spiced rum concoction that I would definitely get on my next visit. The old Victorian tiling and flagstones are beautiful and although not exactly cosy and slightly smelling of damp in places it is a welcoming space with lots of good seating space. It's basically the Temple but 10 times bigger. Worth a visit. read more

Quite impressed by this little pub! I am very impressed by the selection of alcohols! The only thing thats preventing me from giving a 5 star review is the fact that the place sort of feels a bit dingy, damp, humid and it smells like piss(not sure if the air ventilation is not working). read more

Gees, has it really been seven months since I've been here? I really like The Gas Lamp - a windowless subterranean retreat that seems a world away from the hustle of Bridge Street above. With its modest bar, a few tables and chairs and the white tiled walls left pretty much clear of the gumf that you get in some other pubs, it looks like the cross between a bomb shelter, a swimming baths and a Tube station. They don't serve food here which is fine (and interesting as it's supposed to be the kitchen space of a former Mission), but you'd really only want to sit and enjoy some beers anyway. They have a small number of draughts, including from local brewery Blackjack Beers and a fair few bottles to boot. The corridor from the front bar leads you past the loos and into a back room so there's plenty of seats for busier days. A lovely, honest boozer. read more

Don't judge a book by it's cover is the perfect way to talk about The Gas Lamp. When I say cover, I refer to the outside on the place, which is actually pretty difficult to locate unless you have a trusty app called Yelp! I am a massive fan of this place and it really is something very different. Me and my friends were trying to guess it's prior occupancy, my guess was that it was an old public toilet. I know I'm not showering it with sparkles and glitter with that comment, but it's really well done and you could well be sat in some Victorian basement whilst enjoying a lovely American Pale Ale (as I did). I imagine The Gas Lamp will become a regular haunt for me now, and if you're looking to step away from the Hipster crowd, you should do so also! read more

The gas lamp is one of my favourite bars in Manchester but I very rarely find myself in it's comforting confines. The fact that it's super close to Spinningfields makes it not my usual stomping ground but when if I'm in that area it's a kind of beacon of light amongst the Living Ventures type venues that dominate this side of town. I will say that Spinningfields is getting much better for cooler bars that aren't throwing money at trying to be cool, but that's a story for another day and this review is all about Gas Lamp. After a modern day excavation a few years back, what was found underground was a wonderful Victorian tiled building with original features throughout and with a little bit of modernisation, it's become the perfect place to hangout if you're after somewhere that's super relaxed, cosy and off the beaten track. With it being subterranean it's the sort of place that you only know about - if you know about it being there and that's part of the beauty of it. There's a fantastic range of craft beers on tap from home and abroad, plus the bottle selection is something I could enjoy working my way through on a cold winter afternoon. To get all food critic'y on you - my "companion" enjoyed a great G&T and she definitely knows the score when it comes to Gin! So basically you should go to Gas Lamp - every experience has been positive, I just need to take my own advice and go a little bit more often! read more

Underground bar with good choice of drinks. I like the gaslamp but I always feel like I should be a guy sporting a beard I've spent 4 hours trimming to make it look unkempt just to gain access to this place. The two groups of guys sitting in there when we arrived looked at me as if an alien had landed when we walked in. I wish this place was a bit more female friendly. It's a bit public toilet chic with tiled walls and a dingy atmosphere due to the lack of natural light. There are more seats down a passage way so don't be put off if the room where the bar is seems full. We had a chocolate caramel old fashioned - strong for a school night but delicious. The barman had to look up all the cocktails before he could tell me what was in them so maybe the beers are the more popular choice. This is by far the best place to drink in the area although mojo across the road is also worth a look if you want a more lively atmopshere. read more

Would it be unfair of me to give Gas Lamp anything but a five star review on this update? Having spent numerous tipsy Friday nights and relaxing Sunday evenings here, it provides everything we're looking for when out drinking. The interior remains as interesting as the first time we visited, plus it's always fun to share the stories with new visitors. We bring basically everyone here - it's officially parent approved by both H & B families, and me and my colleagues find much solace here after a hard week at work! I've never gone too adventurous on the drink front and usually stick to a pint of Aspall, but can always recognise their good selection of beer, including Brooklyn and local Runaway. Remember to explore the back seating area if the front seems busy and you can always stand in the hallway if you're waiting. I'll probably see you there. read more

Fancy a drink in a Victorian style basement bar then you have it here, Its a quirky little bar just on bridge street which a 2 minute walk from Deansgate, it is down a few steps and you come into a cute little bar with a few tables and chairs, very charming. I ordered a Brooklyn larger and at £4.90 it was quite pricey but i think thats the going rate for Brooklyn larger these days,there is also a large selection of craft beers to choose from and the staff seemed to be quite friendly,The atmosphere was great with mostly office workers enjoying a drink after work. I would take a friend here if i wanted to show them a bar whats quirky but stylish. Its also great that there is some cool bars around this great city than just the Northern Quarter! read more

This hidden gem on Bridge St is so hidden that I walked straight past it, twice. Situated down some steps off the main street, this 'public toilet-esque' bar with it's low lighting and tiled walls looks like it belongs in the NQ. Although I'm very glad it isn't. The Gas Lamp provides the area with somewhere unique to go and with Spinningfields and it's upmarket bars being so close by, I find this pub quite refreshing. I popped in here last week for a beer with my new flatmate as we needed somewhere social to have a drink and a chat, but somewhere quiet enough that we wouldn't be drowned out by noise - The Gas Lamp was just that. The main room near the bar is rather small, with a few tables and seats but there are more seats trough the corridor to the room at the back. This adds to it's cosy atmosphere, I don't think I'd have liked it half as much if it were a wide open space. For a Thursday evening, its clientele was mainly blokes, but it wasn't an uncomfortable atmosphere for a girl and the bar staff were friendly. I can't comment on the cocktail menu as it didn't seem the right place to drink cocktails, although I have been assured they are fab. On this occasion I stuck to beer, of which they have a huge selection, so you'll find yourself spoilt for choice. This bar is going to be 5 minutes from my new place, so I can imagine I'll be here quite a bit. read more

Well what a lovely little spot to wander into. It opened within the last 2 months as I understand. and like several places in Manchester as I understand it, it joins the ranks of converted public toilets. Don't let this put you off though, you won't be sitting round Cubicle doors on converted urinals. The original tiling is still there with no attempt to cover the drill holes for previous fittings, I kinda like it, it adds a character, places that are pristine can sometimes make you feel concious about sitting down for fear of scuffing the upholstery. The tiling potentially is a double edged sword though, while aesthetically it is interesting, noise level wise maybe not such good choice, there were maybe a dozen people which included me and my three colleagues and it was quite loud, aided by a Music system that seemed to have issues on the volume dial (just kept jumping up every 15-20 minutes to which a member of the bar staff went to turn it down) The place is abit of a warren (there are two areas to sit/socialise, one with the bar and another at the back which most peopel could be quite forgiven for not realising it was there) which is nice makes it feel cosier, though I wonder if on a Fri/Sat night whether this could turn into a wall to wall chest to chest fest of sardine proportions (I went during lunchtime). The Beers on Tap looked interesting, some were standard well known faces, but there were 3-4 ales available. and work out at around £3.50 a pint so fairly standard for City drinking. Spirits followed similar suit to the ales, a few familiar faces but several ones I'd not seen before. AND most importantly to those attendees of the Yelp Summer Stunner this is an abode that stocks the Hallowed "Brockmans Gin" *mental note made to return and have some of that.* I wasn't really there long enough to comment on the staff maybe an update for another time so can't tell you about knowledge/attitude/etc. Food appeared to be Bar Snack level as I did not see any form of menus, again I like this not everywhere 'needs' to do food to keep you coming. A plus I feel is this appears to be a good pub in the South of the City centre, I often feel I have to trek from my place of work to find a good pew for obligatory Friday wind down, where as now it looks like I may have a stumbling distance destination. I will quite happily be going again, especially to see how it fairs on an evening session. read more

I was very confident till last night that I know all the bars and pubs in Central Manchester ----- But sigh I was proved wrong in a nice way. Gas Lamp is an old underground toilet which has been converted into a bar, when my companion told me that I had the visions of Temple (bar) in my head. I assumed that the place will be very grungy looking with a very ghetto crowd but I was wrong -- The minute I entered I saw some really sophisticated men in suits and women who look like they work in some posh office round the corner. I love such places which have this element of surprise and contradiction to them! The music was great - mostly rock and roll but I think I heard a few metal tracks too. The bar has a lot of character in terms of the photographs on the walls and even the toilet has some really funky art work. The walls still have the old battered look which kind of adds to the charm of the place. The drinks were reasonably priced, would not say its very cheap but definitely doesn't dig a hole in your wallet. A very friendly bar tender suggested me some delicious beer from America (Always love trying new drinks). Verdict : Grungy yet Sophisticated -- definitely worth a visit! read more

I love the Gas Lamp. For me, with its underground, very missable location, the cold, tiled walls, dimmed lighting, small but confusing layout...it was the first bar in town to have that prohibition-era feel to it. They put on some live acoustic acts regularly, have a great, rotating selection of beers and the staff is always super friendly. Prices are average but the quality is higher than average. I'm pretty sure they do decent cocktails too. It's a bit out of the core areas but really a 2 minutes walk from the Great Northern Warehouse and everything else. read more

Great historic location for a bar just off Deansgate. Don't know how I've never happened to head to The Gas Lamp as it is just my kind of place. Serving up a good selection on cask, draught and a hefty bottle selection. It's in the basement kitchen for an old orphanage I believe and it has a great feel with the floor to ceiling white tiles. The rear room even has the original cooker still it's original location. The front room has no windows so does feel like a secret vault, but the back room has windows on one side which filter more light down from outside in what looks like a small beer garden space at ground level that can be opened during the Summer. Thought I'm not 100% sure about this as it looked locked at the time I was there. Will definitely return here now it's taken up residence in my brain as an actual location rather than a fuzzy half real suggestion in my peripheral thoughts, also with a couple of other decent places opening nearby this stretch towards Salford is becoming more a location in it's own right. read more

I love beer and can't figure out why I've never been to The Gas Lamp for one before. Friendly bar staff, great beer selection - what's not to love? The prices maybe? Seemed a tad expensive but not much different to similar bars I guess. Worth a visit to view the interiors. Have a beer while you do that. read more

A fantastic underground bar!! The gas lamp is easily miss from the outside with the entrance leading down stairs into a white tiled cellar. It's reasonably size with a 2nd room round the back, and given that it was Friday night not too packed. The bar boast a terrific selection, with beers ranging from cheap honest ales to high end IPAs. The gas lamp was a great discovery for me and I will be going back :D read more

I love this place if I'm in the area, just off Deansgate and easy to miss! Lovely space, never too full but always full of atmosphere. There is almost too much to choose from - the gin menu is insane! This is the kinda place you stop 'for one' and leave drunk and happy. I just wish they had a few more bar snacks on offer! read more

This little bar down a set off steps from Bridge Street has become a favourite of mine and my girlfriends when we are this side of Manchester. You need to keep an eye out for it though as we missed it the first time we were looking for it. The décor is very quirky in here - all the walls are tiled and in a way feels  like a public convenience. But don't let that put you off as this place really has it all if you're after good beer or a refreshing cocktail. The beer selection is pretty decent and they have various bottles of beer and ciders. The cocktails which we have tried have always been very tasty and never tasted watered down like some bars that we have been to. Definitely one to try this side of town. read more

Oh how I love this bar, neatly nestled in between 2 shops and down a staircase. Ok it smells a little funky because it was an old Victoria toilet or something similar. But they have lots of different beers and ales to try out at a very reasonable price. You can always try before you buy too! Always a bonus! There's wifi too! Bar staff are friendly and will help you select your beer if you need a nudge! It gets quite busy but it has a great atmosphere! read more
