If you've read any of my previous reviews, you'll know that there are three main components that my wife and I look for when we're on the hunt for a good meal: food quality (of course), ambience/atmosphere, and finally, the customer service experience. I'm happy to say that Charles Dickens Pub succeeds on all fronts! After spending the earlier part of the day at the Oxford Renaissance Festival, we were looking for a satisfying meal to end our trip. Woodstock was on our way back to Toronto so after a quick Google search, we were impressed by what the Dickens (am I allowed to call it that?) had to offer. Upon arrival we found the vibe of the pub instantly appealing - rustic yet fresh, warm and inviting. Our server, Kristine, seemed a down-to-earth, no nonsense person - a genuine character -who made us feel as if she were inviting us into her home. Her easygoing attentiveness made us feel as if our dining experience really mattered to her. It's that kind of service that scores high marks for a restaurant and will keep us coming back. The menu had much to tantalize but my wife and I both settled on The Yorkshire Pudding Bowl: my wife went with the Roast Beef version while I had to try the Toad In The Hole - 3 English Pork Sausages, Fried Onions, Gravy, and Garden Peas. It was a massive undertaking but one I felt confident I could manage. And true to my word, I cleaned my plate and did not regret a single bite (nor bring shame to my family by not finishing). While this meal left little room for dessert, we managed to squeeze in a Deep Fried Mars Bar, something I'd always wanted to try. Served with vanilla ice cream and caramel and chocolate sauce, it was a decidedly naughty experience! And a pub meal isn't complete without a satisfying beverage to wash it down. My wife is a cider drinker so she was happy to see Strongbow on the Draught List. I prefer a good malty brew, so quite enjoyed a couple of pints of Smithwick's. My ONLY quibble with the food was the side veg. Many places treat this as a formality, a required accompaniment, a necessary filler. While an appreciated addition, our vegetables were simply steamed and unseasoned and could have benefited with a warm-through in some seasoned butter (tarragon/garlic?) or the like for some added colour and flavour. (Everything's better with butter!) But other than that, our experience was exquisite. And learning a bit about the family history of the pub only added to the friendly vibe and warm and welcoming atmosphere. Living in Toronto, we wished this place could be our local, but we will definitely find excuses to venture out to Woodstock again and pay another visit to Charles Dickens Pub. read more

I could eat here every day. The food is excellent. I'm from the US so we don't get poutine down here. I can eat that for every meal. The portions are large. Took a short detour while crossing through Canada and it was well worth the extra 10 mins drive. As an expat I've had a fair amount of English food overseas and this was among the best! We had the Toad in the hole & Bangers and mash - the sausages were better than I have had in the UK recently. Finished with sticky toffee pudding - which they comped because they were busy! We decided to try this place since it was pretty late and it was one of the few places open late that had good reviews on Yelp. Interior is nice, spacious but still has a cozy feel. We were greeted right away and invited to sit anywhere we like which was great. We came on a Thursday night so it wasn't packed. I ordered the Guinness which had the perfect amount of head. We ordered the chicken wings (medium spicy), and I have to say they were the best chicken wings myself and my girlfriend have eaten in a while. I used to think All Stars Wings was great, with all their flavour combinations but this place makes it better. Our server notified us that their chicken wings are fresh and never frozen, you can tell from first bite. I should also mention that our server was great, very welcoming and very knowledgeable about the menu items. I had the liver and onions, hard to go wrong there in a pub. My gf ordered the Tiger shrimp curry bowl which was very flavourful. It came with a mango chutney that went perfectly with the naan bread. One of the better dining experiences we've both had in a while and we never thought it would be in a smaller area. We definitely recommend this place and I can't wait to try their chicken wings again! read more

So glad we stopped in for a late lunch! Just a few minutes off the 401 and well worth the time. Very friendly and attentive staff. You can tell the entire meal is homemade and fresh. We had the Chicken Yorky, Chicken Pot Pie, and the "Kichen" Nachos. There was so much food for the four of us and we could not finish anything. We finished the meal splitting the Lemon White Chocolate Cheesecake. It was rich and flavorful and the perfect end to the meal. The soup of the day was tomato vegetable and tasty. The crispy fish sandwich was good, maybe a little more sauce - but it's two generous portions of battered fish on a large bun. Some of us liked the fresh cut potato chips instead of fries, some didn't. The steak & Stilton pie was very good. Flavourful sauce with generous chunks of steak. Fish tacos were breaded fish filets so kind of big pieces, and the taco fixings were fair, the sauce on the tacos was a tomato aioli and enjoyed. I had the Maharajah burger - seasoned lamb patty with curried aioli on a naan bread with tomato, lettuce & onion with onion rings. What a fun pub. We arrived on a Wednesday evening at about 5:45 pm and were able to seat ourselves, but the place quickly filled up after that. It seemed like many of the patrons were locals, with a good mix of vacationers. Our waitress was friendly and had a phenomenal memory, never writing orders at any of her tables, yet getting everything right. Although the pub was busy, she didn't rush us. We began with drinks, a rum and Coke for my husband and a gin and tonic for me. We chatted, studied the menu, eventually put our order in about half an hour after we arrived. Our meals came out surprisingly quickly and were hot, tasty and exactly as ordered. I had the Canadian steak sandwich, hold the peppers. It was a good strip steak on a grilled sub roll with Asiago cheese and grilled onions; I subbed onion rings for fries and we thought the rings were a tad greasy. My husband was quite pleased with his fish and chips, choosing cod since they were out of perch. He enjoyed the cole slaw that came with it and helped out with the onion rings. Even though the place was busy, our waitress took time to take our picture when she delivered the Dickens Amaretto specialty of the house. It's a scoop of vanilla ice cream swimming in a cool pool of Bailey's Chocolate Cherry Irish Cream. First timers at this English-style pub. We ordered items mostly from the British Fare section of the menu. The chicken pot pie was fantastic although it left me yearning for more. My dad ordered the roast beef dinner and found that it was over cooked for his liking. He actually asked for a steak knife as he was unable to cut the slices of beef with a butter knife. If you are out for conversation, this is not the place to go around dinner time. The waitress basically stated that the noise level was normal for this time if night. It was 5:30 on on a Sunday and we had to yell at each other in order to hear. I'm not sure if we will return as there are other restaurants in the area that would be more accommodating for conversation and a great bite to eat. read more

Seriously, I would pay money for your tomato soup recipe - what do you put in there that makes it so good? Met a couple friends here on a Saturday night around 730pm. When we arrived It wasn't full capacity yet. The slow service surprised me as a result. It took longer than it should have to return with a refilled pitcher of beer, and honestly shouldn't considering the margin they make on booze! We ordered and waiting for eternity (about 45-50 minutes) for our food. At one point it had been so long I forgot we had ordered! 3 at our table ordered wings, one salad, and one fish sandwich. I'm pleasantly surprised to be writing a review like this for a little English pub in my home town. Hadn't been to The Dickens in 15 years and ended up going twice over the holidays while home visiting family. Must say, the food and service were both excellent...no, really, EXCELLENT. All of us enjoyed the food immensely; cottage pies, fish and chips, bangers and mash, the whole lot. Perfection. Going back later in the week, I was jonesing for some more veggies so dared to try the stir fry on our waitress' recommendation and was delighted; lots of beautiful veggies, tender chicken, delicious sauce and unexpectedly, turmeric rice, which, though more traditional with Indian food, was a delicious accompaniment to the meal. Have to say, when visiting family again, I'm going to suggest more visits to The Dickens. If it were local to me, I'd be a regular for sure. read more
