Yorkshire Pudding Bowl - Toad In The Hole
    Warren S.

If you've read any of my previous reviews, you'll know that there are three main components that my wife and I look for when we're on the hunt for a good meal: food quality (of course), ambience/atmosphere, and finally, the customer service experience. I'm happy to say that Charles Dickens Pub succeeds on all fronts! After spending the earlier part of the day at the Oxford Renaissance Festival, we were looking for a satisfying meal to end our trip. Woodstock was on our way back to Toronto so after a quick Google search, we were impressed by what the Dickens (am I allowed to call it that?) had to offer. Upon arrival we found the vibe of the pub instantly appealing - rustic yet fresh, warm and inviting. Our server, Kristine, seemed a down-to-earth, no nonsense person - a genuine character -who made us feel as if she were inviting us into her home. Her easygoing attentiveness made us feel as if our dining experience really mattered to her. It's that kind of service that scores high marks for a restaurant and will keep us coming back. The menu had much to tantalize but my wife and I both settled on The Yorkshire Pudding Bowl: my wife went with the Roast Beef version while I had to try the Toad In The Hole - 3 English Pork Sausages, Fried Onions, Gravy, and Garden Peas. It was a massive undertaking but one I felt confident I could manage. And true to my word, I cleaned my plate and did not regret a single bite (nor bring shame to my family by not finishing). While this meal left little room for dessert, we managed to squeeze in a Deep Fried Mars Bar, something I'd always wanted to try. Served with vanilla ice cream and caramel and chocolate sauce, it was a decidedly naughty experience! And a pub meal isn't complete without a satisfying beverage to wash it down. My wife is a cider drinker so she was happy to see Strongbow on the Draught List. I prefer a good malty brew, so quite enjoyed a couple of pints of Smithwick's. My ONLY quibble with the food was the side veg. Many places treat this as a formality, a required accompaniment, a necessary filler. While an appreciated addition, our vegetables were simply steamed and unseasoned and could have benefited with a warm-through in some seasoned butter (tarragon/garlic?) or the like for some added colour and flavour. (Everything's better with butter!) But other than that, our experience was exquisite. And learning a bit about the family history of the pub only added to the friendly vibe and warm and welcoming atmosphere. Living in Toronto, we wished this place could be our local, but we will definitely find excuses to venture out to Woodstock again and pay another visit to Charles Dickens Pub.

I forgot what this dish was called, but man oh man..that melted cheese on the Toasted bread was to die for!!

Amazing place to go eat! Food was good, staff was friendly, and the place it's self was cut, small and cozy

I could eat here every day. The food is excellent. I'm from the US so we don't get poutine down here. I can eat that for every meal. The portions are large. They carry the Budweiser prohibition brew, which they don't sell in the states. Next time I'm in town for business I'll be a regular here.

Amazingly delicious chicken wings. Freshly prepared and you can taste it!

We decided to try this place since it was pretty late and it was one of the few places open late that had good reviews on Yelp. Interior is nice, spacious but still has a cozy feel. We were greeted right away and invited to sit anywhere we like which was great. We came on a Thursday night so it wasn't packed. I ordered the Guinness which had the perfect amount of head. We ordered the chicken wings (medium spicy), and I have to say they were the best chicken wings myself and my girlfriend have eaten in a while. I used to think All Stars Wings was great, with all their flavour combinations but this place makes it better. Our server notified us that their chicken wings are fresh and never frozen, you can tell from first bite. I should also mention that our server was great, very welcoming and very knowledgeable about the menu items. I had the liver and onions, hard to go wrong there in a pub. My gf ordered the Tiger shrimp curry bowl which was very flavourful. It came with a mango chutney that went perfectly with the naan bread. One of the better dining experiences we've both had in a while and we never thought it would be in a smaller area. We definitely recommend this place and I can't wait to try their chicken wings again!

Bad service. Too many drunks. Needs cleaner bathrooms. Better accessibility. Bartenders are sluts.

Loved the food! The fish tacos are delicious. I'm in love with curry sauce to dip my fries in.

The Cat 'N' Fiddle - Cool little place... Live music and great pub food

Stopped in because the patio looked inviting after an afternoon of walking the neighbourhood…read morerunning errands. The advertised beer special was not available, sold out, but the waitress allowed a substitution. Ordered the steak n guinness pie and was surprised that it was indeed a meat pie, not just stew topped with pastry. Disappointed that there was no steak n kidney pie. The meat pie was typical pub grub. Not a lot of choice for someone that's lactose intolerant. Bathroom was clean, the staff were friendly and efficient. I stayed on the patio except to use the bathroom. Reasonably priced, would visit again if in the area.

This will be a confusing review. Been wanting to come check this place out for a while now knowing…read morethat they have live music everyday. Had some time to kill before a show so decided to check it out. Cool little place, felt comfy and friendly with what seemed like regulars occupying the bar area. Server was friendly, a lovely young lady singing, and our drink order was taken promptly. Then it got weird. Beers took a super long time to arrive even though the bar wasn't too busy. Food order was also taken quickly and took a super long time to arrive. Servers shift was done, we paid and were told a new server would be taking care of us. That never happened. As our glasses sat empty, the Mr. went up to the bar to grab another round. For some strange reason 2 beers at the bar were almost $2 more than what we just paid. That's not cool. The nachos were really good (although $4 for the very tiny side of chili was overpriced) beer was cold, but the service was disappointing. For that reason I'm not sure if I will be returning.
