Stopped by as I was in town for work! First time and on Monday night I have a craving for wings so found this place on Yelp and since I try and avoid chains this place popped up! Positives....got the spicy BBQ wings and they were packed with flavor and a good portion came for $10.99. they are not holding back on quantity! I also got the granziano sausage sandwich loaded with cheese, peppers and onions and house made marinara sauce! Definitely a huge portion and way to much for one! Good flavor and fries are excellent! Great meal to split! Negative...none really! Also a large quantity of the with sports running and great seating with TV's! Definitely a place to go and watch the game! Service was solid! This is my first time here but many people that were with me have been here before and said they loved it. Today, that was not the case. I will say the waitress did an amazing job for being the only one working. She cleaned all the tables herself and waited all the tables herself. The bartender didn't even help her from what we could see. The pizza was burnt, there was NO fish in the fried fish sandwich, and the quesadilla just looked unappetizing but was edible at least :/ When we told the waitress she took both the pizza and the fish sandwich off the bill and reassured her we don't blame her. Definitely not the chicken coop I though I loved. Couldn't tell it was open cuz the sign is broke, order cheese sticks and wings get told no cheese sticks which is fine then I get my 1.60 a wing basket with ranch all over my wings and me being not a ranch fan at all just turned my gut so this sucks leaving spending money on my spouses meal and sitting there. Disappointed as I could be. Update: after reading comments and reviews and seeing generic responses from the owner that looks like he isn't too concerned about his sports bar I will be finding another wing place. This place was amazing when it first opened, sucked horribly for a long while and then got new owners. What a difference it has made! The service is top notch, the food is excellent and the drinks are cold! We've been attending trivia Tuesday for a couple weeks now. Disney trivia seemed to have brought out half of Ankeny but the staff handled it like champions! It took a long time for our food and drinks but everything was as we ordered. Our server was friendly and overwhelmed but busting her ass. The food orders were correct and delicious. The bathroom was clean as well considering the amount of people! This is a fun place to go drink beer and watch a game. Plenty of TVs available and nice sports bar atmosphere. Definitely a place I would go to have some drinks on a Sunday and catch a game with friends. The food is okay, but nothing I'm amazed by. I love buffalo wings and wanted to love these, but it seems that Ankeny is an oasis of good buffalo wings. The wings were not super crispy, and the sauce needed more kick. Other standard sports bar fare is available besides wings, but again nothing I got that excited about. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly however and the serving staff was great - we'll keep this in mind as a great place to catch a game and have a cold beer! read more

When I first heard there was a new sports bar eatery place in Ankeny I was not expecting much. However, after reading multiple reviews about it on Yelp my interest was sparked and decided to see for myself what they had to offer. There is plently of parking in the lot shared by multiple businesses in the plaza. We went for a lunch so the crowd was small. We seated ourselves, not sure if this is a lunch thing or if it is always seat yourself. We were greeted by our server after looking over our menu for a few minutes which were already on the tables. We decided to try their wings, 20 pieces, half BBQ and half Thunderhead (which is like a spicy sauce). We also opted for the Thunderjack 16" thin crust pizza! Our server recommended the thin crust so that's what we did. The wings were very good! Extremely juicy, tender, and big! They taste almost as if someone just cooked it on an outdoor grill, very fresh. The pizza? Oh man it was HUGE! One slice will satisfy your hunger if you are appetizers, two will get you fulfilled. The pizza was incredible with the big amount of cheese and tasty crust! The place itself has MANY TVs for your sport viewing needs! Our server was very friendly and attentive. First time at Thunderhead! If you really love the Chicken Coops wings...Good news..This is the same company! Came in for an early supper at almost 6. Sat ourselves as the sign said and not very busy. Sat in a nice both, lots and lots, and lots of TVs around and over the bar. The waitress was prompt and helped us right away. The volume of the place was perfect, could watch a tv, listen to the music, and still have a conversation. The menu is on the table and easy to pick from. The previous Yelpers said the wings were the Chicken Coop sauces. Oh yum they were! My husband got the Philly cheese steak sandwich with fries and it was also really good and then he helped me with my wings. I had the 20 wings. Half mild and half honey bbq. Couldn't eat them all but so good. Boxed them up for leftovers. They will be delicious. Have to say for a place pushing beer they could have more of a local selection on tap but they have lots of bottle choices. Glad we stopped. The wings hit the spot and when we come back this way. First time I went to Thunderhead it was with a friend who was in the mood for a Moscow mule. Which is very good here!!! They come in many assorted flavors. They have a dozen plus flavors of vodka to add. Second time, came here for lunch after class, same great service! Friendly! Love the feel of the place with the wood slab bar and wood beams. Food was okay, service was okay, price was okay. Welcome to Mediocreville. They did have seating when no one else did for the Iowa Hawkeye bowl game though! My boyfriend liked the dry rub wings a lot, (it's not a dry rub IMO, saucy) however I found them to be over seasoned. They came out lighting fast. We ordered a specialty pizza, which came out somewhat cold but also tasted okay. It took forever to get served, and the waitress didn't come by often, but she was friendly enough. Nothing special here. Over priced wings with no option for two flavors when you order 10 wings. As a matter of fact everything is over priced. Appetizers average about $12. If you have visited the Chicken Coop in West Des Moines or Urbandale, you've basically been here too. Thunderhead Sports Bar is owned by the same people that brought you those two Chicken Coops and also several in Nebraska. The menu is exactly the same (a couple of items have different names) and that's not a bad thing. I think Chicken Coop has some of the best wings in Des Moines and these were the exact same, meaty and flavorful. I also recommend the buffalo chips to munch on. They are potato slices fried and then covered in a cayenne rub. On my last particular visit I had the buffalo chicken sandwich and I subbed out the sauce they list on the menu for the hottest one they have. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My wife had the pulled pork sandwich and she said the meat was juicy. We also shared the cheese balls and they were much better than expected. Sometimes bar cheese balls are kind of generic but these were good enough for me to mention. As for the beer. This place is called Thunderhead so of course they are going to push their beers over the others. Thunderhead is brewed in Kearney, NE, (not on site) and this place lays claim to be the only bar in Iowa to have their beers on tap (you can find them in cans at some grocery stores). They have about 15 taps, at the time I was there seven of them were occupied with T'Head beers. They had their standard four lineup on tap plus three others that were seasonal/specialty brews. Then they had your standard macro-crap taps and a few others with Blue Moon, Sam Adams, Angry Orchard, etc. I did spy that they had a beer from New American Brewing Company on tap which is a very new and upcoming brewery in Ankeny so it was nice to see them share tap room with an upstart brewery. Otherwise they had a cooler with another 30 some beers. As for the beers I had, their Leatherhead Red and Cropduster IPA were just OK. Nothing to write home about but not awful by any means. I also had a seasonal peach wheat which was refreshing and hit the spot. Definitely the best of the three I had that night. As for the ambiance, the place is really just a big room with a lot of TVs on the wall. The bar in back is made of cedar wood and it kind of stands out from other bars I have sat at. A good place to come by on gameday. The service was so so. I chalk it up to being new still. There were several times when the bartenders had down moments yet they still didn't see us waiting to take or orders or offer refills or new pours. read more

Typical sports bar. Lots of televisions, we came on a busy night and was seated in the corner. I had their IPA and a grilled chicken sandwich. The chicken was well done and the bun was very dry, I will get something different next time. The Thunderhead IPA was a typical Midwest IPA, average hoppyness and malty. Drinks were mostly mixer, had to ask for extra booze. The food was mediocre, well sub mediocre from my experience. After ordering we didn't see our waitress but two other time. " Need more drinks" I would expect how is everything, can I get you anything else, need more drinks... Nope "need more drinks" without enthusiasm. Their burgers are not anything special when you look at the menu, but they're even more unimpressive once they arrive to the table. The burger was dry and tasted (and looked) like a frozen patty. The best part of the meal was the insane amount of cheese they added to the burger. The fries were not great and the onion rings were also not special. Even my sons grilled cheese, which looked delicious, was actually burnt and dry. I feel like I could have gotten better food at a fast food chain and paid half the price. I've been several times. This restaurant is quite close to home. I like the idea that it's an independent and somewhat locally owned business. I really want to love it for convenience among other reasons but I do not. The service has always been fantastic and we have never had a problem there. The atmosphere needs work. It's obnoxiously bright with the spotlight lighting. Not calming, somewhat uncomfortable. The wood grain tables and the vinyl chairs appear to have come from an auction of a 1980's restaurant. It's a drab place with no style or comfort. Just slapped together quickly and cheaply. I can ignore every one of these very minor annoyances. The food is where I feel let down. The French or prime rib dip was just ok. This is a sandwich that is so simple and can be made or broken by simple things like the freshness of the bread, quality of the meat, the au jus, etc. It seems simple but a good one doesn't come out of thin air. It was just fair. I tried the parmesan garlic wings. They were cooked great but there wasn't much flavor. Very plain. The graziano Italian grinder was again just very forgettable. The bread was average, nothing seemed to be particularly fresh, and the taste was very mediocre. The portions of everything are actually quite large. Their fries are awesome but surely they come frozen, however they were fried perfectly. I'm still trying to find an entree I would want to come back for. As a bar that has food this is just ok. Compared to restaurants the food is subpar. My next visit will determine if I can find a reason to bring myself back for anything beyond a drink. I believe that all the food is being cooked per the recipe and standard of the restaurant. I believe the problem is more of a management issue in relation to obtaining fresh and quality supplies like bread. Spend time to develop better recipes that are more restaurant quality. More fresh made components and less sysco canned stuff. Quality over quantity please. read more
