Once again, Mason the owner treated me very well with two beautiful bushels of Pueblo Mirasols, roasted in the gas tumbler to perfection. Spent some time in the kitchen putting the batches into Quart Zip Lock Bags for storage in the downstairs freezer. Couldn't resist sampling one and this year's crop, got some very nice heat to it. Do yourself a favor and give these guys a try, up on 52nd and North Federal. And while you're at it, buy a pound of their Lulu's Chimayo red chile powder. Best you'll find anywhere. First time purchasing Hatch chilies from this establishment. I tried this location because of bad experiences at another close establishment. After reading reviews I felt this place might give a better bushal weight. I purchased two bushels for $50 cash. I'm not certain how much a bushel of roasted chilies should weigh. Googled it and the range seems to be 20 to 35 pounds depending on various factors. One bushel of mild weighed 6 pounds when I weighed them at home. The second bushel of medium weight 5 pounds 12 ounces. 11 pounds 12 ounces for $50 cash seems to be a rip off. I'll be looking for anouther stand. read more

Do not order from these guys regardless of what tell you! I ordered frozen chilis for my brother in November they said it was insured. It never arrived I called for help they just put it off on USPS, USPS tells me that they should be calling handling this I just keep getting the runaround. I put a chargeback with my bank and than the chili guys said they would investigate and re send chilis and seemed super helpful if I take chargeback off as soon as I did they didn't want to help again they tell me call USPS . $138.00 for nothing save yourself the money and stress and go somewhere else. read more

While I've always enjoyed the folks attending the stands I've bought from, this place has the addition of really good chili from Hatch, NM. Having lived 20 yrs in the Hatch valley this is a major plus. For the past 7 years I've flown to Denver from central Florida always curious what stand will be open when I arrive. I'm 67 years old and was born in the Rio Grande Valley just south of Hatch, I grew up on Hatch chile. NEVER, in my 47 years of buying chile on my own, have I received such poor quality, NEVER have I faced such bold face lying. Firstly, despite their years of selling chile (and it's with an "e", not "i", like they spell it), they'll tell you that they don't know how many pounds are in a bushel, and they'll tell you that because if you know that it's 22 pounds, you can figure out that at their price of $45 a bushel, they're selling chile at over $2 a pound when you can buy it in the grocery store for $1.50 a pound. Secondly, because bushels come in burlap sacks and can't be seen, you have to rely on them to tell you when they got their chiles in; when I purchased mine on Friday afternoon, they told me that theirs came in on Wednesday, yet when I opened the sack to roast on Saturday morning, almost all the stems were already dried out and brittle, and chiles in the center of the bag were rotting; clearly, these chiles had been stored in a hot warehouse and had been there for nearly a week. Once chile starts to rot, it immediately begins a chain reaction of the chiles around it rotting, and when I dumped the sack, 15% of the chilies were rotten. For a person or family who might consume only 22 pounds a year, go to the local grocery store where you can see what you're buying and save yourself $11; if you're like me and can fill a freezer, you might consider a drive to Albuquerque, or even Hatch, where you can get 40 pound sacks for $36. Even in San Antonio, family members only paid $.99 a pound at their local mega grocery store chain. read more

I made my yearly trip during chili harvest to pick up a sack of Hatch chilies. You walk in, they take your order, and give you a number that they call out when the chilies are done roasting. There are many varieties of chilies from New Mexico and Colorado with varying degrees of heat. I also picked up a few heads of garlic that I was going to use in my green chili, the lady asked if I wanted them roasted with the chilies. HELL YEAH I DO!!! So this place also sells fireworks and a variety of chili related items -- chili powder, jelly, brittle, taffy, etc. Basically, they sell, well, anything chili. I highly recommend this place for the variety and the streamlined process that they have to get you in and out. I was there on a peak Saturday during peak time, and I was in and out with a few bushels of freshly roasted chilies in about 15 minutes. Keep in mind that they also have cleaned and frozen chilies throughout the year that they roast and store in the freezer. HUGE TIP. Grab a few heads of garlic near the checkout and have them roasted with your chilies! read more

I drove two hours to come to this store and have been getting my chili's here for quite a few years. They were out of Big Jim's and I asked for a comparable chili heat wise. They were out of Anaheim and recommend Hatch medium. I spoke with two employees regarding the heat level and both said they were comparable to Big Jim's. I ordered two bushels roasted. When I got home I asked my son-in-law to taste test the chili's. (He won a chili eating contest so he knows hot!). These chili's were hot, hot, HOT!! They did NOT compare to Big Jim's! What a sad ripoff. I ordered frozen chili they took my money never delivered. Finally got a hold of them they told me they could' not get the order out that week before Thanksgiving he felt it would be to busy. Ok so I said I'm ok with the next Monday, this went on for three more weeks no chili on calls no return of my money. Then finally someone answered the phone weeks later and said we don't have any more chili but we will get it in a few weeks. (Right this is a seasonal food only.) So after his lying and making excuses he then ask if I would like to cancel my order? I guess so since you have no intention of being able to get chili since the season was up two months before. I am not very happy, I live in Arizona and just ordered 4 packages of 6oz chile powder paid $20.00 dollars that was fine. But the company charged me $32.00 to ship 24oz. The shipping price did not come up until I submitted the payment and it processed. I called to let them know what happened and I was told they could not to anything because the system calculates how far the product has to go. I do not live in the middle east. This place carries a mix of dried spices, pickles, salsas, fireworks and fresh New Mexico and Pueblo chilies. The storefront is located on the shady section of North Federal above i-70. They actually have a very good selection of chilies including Hatch, New Mexico and Pueblo chilies in all varieties of hotness. I went with the medium Hatch...so good! The prices are reasonable but no 2 for 1 sales here like a lot of places advertising green chilie. It's about $20 for a bushel of hatch green, fire roasted to order. they also have a good selection of ground chilie powders which come pre-bagged and the prices seem good. The thing that concerns me about this place is they actually have a very impressive selection of fireworks and not more than 50 feet away a man with a blowtorch is roasting the chilie's... doesn't seem like a great ideal. I hope they have a good fire extinguisher. However if you do need fresh, dried or ground chilie, I think this would be good spot and worth the risk. read more

Long after the other roasting operations have ceased, the chili guys are still maning the roasters. With literally tons of chilis to choose from, deciding what you want is the most difficult part of the process. So disappointed this year at my experience at the seasonal stand off of Santa Fe and Cherokee. I ordered one bushel of medium. Grabbed two jars of their wares - a salsa and a queso - and my total was $49 and change. Thought that seemed a bit high for having submitted the online coupon, but did not question since others were waiting. Should have, because that bag was super heavy and he either goofed up my order or gave me / charged me for someone else's. Never have their peppers burned my eyes during the ride home, and I order medium every year. After skinning them, it was clear these suckers were not medium... not even close. And this was not one bushel, either. But I decided to just try and deal. Tried cooking with them but despite the fact that we can handle hot, these were inedible and I had to throw away the dish I made, which cost me $30 in ingredients in addition to the peppers. We literally could not eat the entree. So there is no way we can eat these in green chile. I figured they would want to make this right, so I found the owner's email and told him what happened four weeks ago, asking for a product replacement of medium peppers. I got no response. Not nice to do to a repeat customer. Now I am out $50 and have a freezer full of skinned peppers that could eat the chrome off my car bumper. read more

I waited for 2 hours after the chilies were roasted. Sorry, but the roasting is too hot and too fast at the south Santa Fe & Iowa location in Denver. The meat of the chilies are not cooked - still raw on many of the larger chilies. The skin is the only thing that's burned (seared, scorched), and the skins don't slide off like they should. I had to run under water to rub the seared skins off the chilies. So, if you could slow the roasting process down and the heat - and actually roast them, you will have a better product. read more

Cant give a honest rating yet. I referred a friend from out of state who grew up with Hatch chili and we all know there is no substitute. She ordered a batch and it never arrived. The company was informed and she was told shipping was insured so she ordered a second batch which she did receive and was very happy with. Only problem being its been 2 months that 2 orders were charged to her account and is having issues getting in touch with the person who is in charge of shipping. I live in Denver I contacted the company today and was told the person in charge of shipping will be in on Tuesday. I have been buying my chili from this location for years and have never had a issue. I am hoping the issue will be resolved so I wont need to go there and get involved. I feel a little responsible since I did refer her. Will update this week on progress.* Sorry forgot to update*. ***UPDATE*** They never did give her a refund or even call her back. Who ever does the shipping there is a idiot because he told me that she chose to have the package sent other then overnight which is insured. Hers was not. I just had an employee pick up some ristra's as I have done every year from this establishment and have just inspected what I just paid $190 for. As my employee didn't know what to look for, he just picked up what I had arranged for him to get. The Chili Guys sold me a dried out old falling apart dusty clearly left over Ristra's. "His last two" according to the employee. After contacting the store with my concerns the manager called me back and told what the F___ Do you want me to do! Told me to drive the 4 hour round trip back to the store and he'll see what he can do.
