We were unsure whether the shop was open at about 4.20pm but then spotted some people coming out with bags, having just made a purchase. We went in the shop and the lady said to us bluntly: "we are closed". She then turned to a man behind us (I assume a local man) and said in a tender voice: "oh but we are not closed for you of course, what is it that you need? Some bread, some cakes..., what can I get for you?". She actually said this right in front of us!!! She then happily served the man as we, feeling rejected and like third class citizens, had to leave the shop. We were shocked and this has been the rudest moment I have experienced in my life. We will not be going back here. Not a good first impression of/welcome to Cornwall. Whilst we can understand that some shops may close early, we can not understand why a shop would ever reject customers only to serve others queueing behind.

We got a couple of pasties to go - the crab pasty and a traditional Cornish pasty. Both were tasty - the crab was definitely more special and unique. This is a pasty staple according to my Cornish pasty expert friend. It's an award winning bakery…read morethat's been in business for 150 years. I'm kind of obsessed with having the best of the local food in a new city, so it seemed like a no brainer! I was a tad disappointed it was so ... plain though. It's been around a looooong time, so it's a no frills joint with small, medium and large pasties. Steak and cheese and onion of course and not much else besides that. I got a medium steak and it was piping freaking hot and plenty of food to fill me up. I carried it around the corner to the beach and ate it overlooking the beautiful blue sea that is the Cornish Coast. On further exploration of the town center, I kicked myself for not walking around for diving into the first pasty/pasty shop I saw. There were a couple that looked a little more modern that I think I might have preferred (I am so, so spoiled by having the visited the amazing Cornish Pasty Company in Phoenix so much, I admit that!). But didn't have it in me to eat two pasties in two days. You can't go wrong here if tradition is what you're after, but if you like a modern take on comfort foods, you might want to try another one (there are plenty all around this area!)

Great for veggie options, I had a quiche and my dad had a falafel burger and all quickly disappeared off the plate. For afters I shared a pain au raisin with my mum and it was absolutely lovely and I left feeling very full. Drinks wide there's also so much choice, and a lot of it is locally sourced (coffee is Origin coffee made in Cornwall!). The amount of tea you get in the tea pot also made me a very happy individual! Definitely recommend a pop in if you're driving past, and it's even worth a detour to go visit!

Best pasties in the world. Forget all that nonsense about chicken tikka, or lamb and blue cheese…read morefillings, this is the real deal. Traditional and delicious. Make sure ye order in the morning though, otherwise you'll probably find they're sold out in the early afternoon.
