Visited today, they are still forcing masks because although the mandate is lifted and the owner doesn't care, "other people do" I guess they are willing to turn away customers who suffer from neurological conditions which prevent them wearing a mask because other customers are afraid (but apparently not afraid enough to get vaccinated or stay home). My mom and I made a trip here the other day after visiting the sunflower festival at a local farm. We saw the sign and decided to stop in which was one of the best things we could have done. We have a summer cottage on a lake up here but live year round in Massachusetts. We used to think a store close to home was great for Christmas but it was NOTHING compared to what this store had brought to the table. Years ago, my Mom started a tradition with me, and brought me to The Christmas Dove every year. She continued this tradition with our daughters as they were growing up so they too could experience the "magic" the the Dove has. It gives me great sadness to report that after shopping here and being loyal to this business for more than 22 years, I have come to conclusion my business is no longer wanted or appreciated as a result of the extremely poor customer service I experienced. This was not an easy decision to make, but after weeks of trying to get an order mailed (gift to a friend), the excessive lies told to me during this process and the deception, it was time to say good-bye. While the store is still beautiful and has great, quality products, I DO NOT recommend to purchase and have items mailed. I am choosing not to go there at all anymore, but it doesn't mean others should not. I just strongly emphasize NOT to trust the company to have any packages or gifts mailed. The manager is the only person at fault and at the end of the day, the owner made everything right by refunding me my money that was charged several weeks before. Maybe, some day, I'll be able to go back. In order for me to come to this conclusion not to go there any more, it had to be that bad of a situation. You have no idea how much this upsets me, because as a loyal customer of so many years who was in one of their commercials emphasizing their wonderful business several years ago, you would think a simple task would have been completed within the stated time frame of "next business day after purchase", but after many phone calls over several weeks which started 2 weeks after my friend did not receive the gift, unacceptable. I think it was the lying that was the worst and bothered me the most. "I need to check with my shipping department". He IS THE SHIPPING department! "The package was sent out on Monday". A simple and straight forward store housed in a massive old homestead, this place is a maze of rooms featuring ornaments, lights. trees, displays, nutcrackers, LED's and all sorts of other Christmas items and knick knacks. When I think back to being a kid at Christmas I still remember the beauty, awe and wonder that was felt at our yearly trip to the Christmas Dove. The store offers everything for every price range. Though my budget is small foregoing a Target or Walmart for a special gift, small ornaments, one special ornament or something personalized for a trip to the Christmas Dove is worth it. This is a wonderful place to take the family to get into the holiday spirit. Even if the parking lot is packed, there are so many little rooms inside that it usually doesn't feel crowded. Most rooms have at least one decorated tree, and the ornaments are for sale. (Most are pricey, but you can easily spend an hour here, so think of it as the cost of admission and get one.) There are hundreds they will personalize for you, too. It's fun just to see how happy the little ones are. Tons of photo opportunities. They change the displays every year, so this plus Calef's Country Store across the street have become a family tradition for us. I'm removing a star because (1) if they are going to keep the train track upstairs, they should make sure there are multiple trains running (it used to be great) and (2) someone needs to empty the wastepaper bin in the bathroom more regularly. Tthis is a problem we see every year---why?? Put a bag in there and remove it every few hours! Aside from these minor quibbles, we highly recommend!!! read more

I tried to return a not open baby Jesus in the crib within 24 hours of buying it. I had discovered when I got home we had several in storage. I had all my paperwork for the refund and the guy behind the counter started to give me a gift certificate. I asked why not a refund he said its the store policy and pointed to a small sign on the back wall stating this in VERY SMALL print. I asked why the sales girl did not inform me of this he stated he don't know. I said that I would probably not shop here again and he stated that's your choice. SO I guess the word Christmas which has Christ in it and a Dove representing the holy sprit means nothing to this over priced company. No wonder the parking lot is emply!! read more

It's always been our tradition to start the holiday season with a visit to the Christmas Dove. It was hard to accept that over the past couple of years, the store had taken a serious dip in quality of products and service. Word has it that the current owner took over the business after his father retired and has run it as his own personal piggy bank. This pompous fool has caused his parents so much financial difficulty that they've been forced to sell off property in order to keep the last store open. I suspect it won't be for long. Last year we made two trips to the store, first in October, and were disappointed at the minimal stock they had, most notably in the Department 56 collection. As a collector of Dickens' Christmas Carol and the New England villages, I was eager to purchase two new houses and a number of figurines. "Enthusiasts will enjoy a bountiful selection?" What selection? Little Svenson junior stated that he doesn't keep much on hand before the holiday season and assured me that he already placed an order with Dept.56, which should arrive at the beginning of November. My husband and I returned at that time only to find even less stock on the items he supposedly replenished. I ended up purchasing over three-hundred dollars' worth of Dept. 56 products online. Aside from the lack of inventory, the store itself is looking rather shabby. I sympathize with John and Linda, but from a business perspective, they only have themselves to blame for enabling their incompetent son to ruin their livelihood. Fortunately, there are a few Christmas store gems in Maine if you are looking for high-end products in a cozy holiday setting.
