My second visit to this place, and this time we came on a weekend. The place was packed with guests, and there were more servers working. I tried two teas this time, and they were delicious. My friend decided that her first tea was enough for the day and was given a tea bag of her choice to take home. I noticed that the decorations had changed since my last visit, which gave the place a different vibe. It felt like visiting a new tea parlor. This time, instead of soup, we were served a salad. It was a good salad. I requested honey for my tea, as I saw others having it and it was not on the table. I did not particularly care for some of the tea sandwiches offered this month. The rest of the food, and particularly my scone, were good. I would come back again but will pay close attention to the menu offered. read more

I am so glad this was the last stop on our 10 day road trip. We did afternoon tea at a few places during the trip since that is my favorite thing. This one was the best by far! We also stayed overnight and found the Inn to be very nice. We stayed in the Eleanor room and it was a little small but still clean and comfortable. I love that they keep some of the teas available downstairs for you to enjoy during your stay. The afternoon tea had a Hocus Pocus themed since we visited in October. Everything single thing was wonderful. I have been to afternoon teas all around the world and this one can complete with some of the best. Highly recommended! read more

This was our second trip to the Silver Fountain Inn & Tea Parlor and we were very disappointed. Our first time was a Christmas Tea and with the exception of a slightly rude interaction with a server everything was amazing. This time we had extremely poor service. Our waitress was a young girl who was not very attentive. One of the water glasses on the table was dirty and we had no silverware, we had to ask another waitress for a new glass and silverware as ours was no where to be seen. The soup was interesting. It was more of an applesauce texture than a soup. The bottom tier had ham and apricot biscuits (these were good but a little dry and tough), Benedictine Sandwiches (light and delicious), and Caramelized Onion and Goat Cheese tartlets (delicious but tiny). The second tier had Carrot Cake Scones with Cream Cheese Frosting and Pecans which were amazing. The top tier was very disappointing. It had an outstanding Strawberry Rhubarb Gelato, ok Raspberry Cream Puffs, Petite Fours which had way too much of a marzipan flavor, and Blueberry Lavender Macarons that tasted like soap. Our teas were all fantastic but about halfway through our meal our waitress came over to let us know they have other reservations and will need us to finish our meal. I was in absolute shock. I understand it's a holiday but that's exactly why we were there. The table next to us on the left was not rushed but they had a different waitress. The table to the right had the same waitress as we did and they too were rushed. It was an extremely upsetting experience and we will most likely never return. A lovely tearoom with fantastic food, ambiance, and service. I've already made reservations to return. Everything we ate was delicious, the tea was amazing. The scone with clotted cream was the best scone I've ever had. The real star was the whipped honey on baguette; it was simple and delicious. I did burn my mouth quite bad on the cranberry brie pastry bite, but that was only because it was directly from the oven and it was so good I finished it too quickly. read more

This is a lovely inn with beautiful decor and table settings. Service was attentive and professional. Yea selection was amazing. But the food was awful. Instead of finger sandwiches and other tea room fare our group of ladies was served hot dog sliders, tasteless and quite inedible zucchini tarts and doughy BLT focaccia. One of us had a cucumber sandwich instead of the hot dogs and she said it was good but the presentation was a large white bread sandwich instead of dainty triangles as other tea rooms serve. I do not recommend until their food improves. I'd recommend they study other tea rooms and emulate their food selections. read more

With high expectations, we visited The Silver Fountain on a cold snowy day. We found our party of 4 being seated right by the front door and where unable to be reseated anywhere else, despite being the first customers there. This unfortunately led to us getting blasted with cold air, every time the front door was opened, to let others in or out. This definitely took away from the experience and all the more so as the staff (older woman, hopefully not the owner and younger new staff member) were completely unaware of this chilling affect. The overall Victorian ambience was overwhelmed by the numerous gift baskets, probably for sale. Our table cloth still had crumbs on it and my place mat was covered with lots of crumbs and dirty from its previous use. This was well hidden by the selection of serving plates on top of the place mat. A peculiarity was that the tea cup set up was without tea spoons. Weird having to stir my cube sugar with a dessert spoon. This along with our server having a very particular style of serving led to a less than stellar experience for us all. Our server wasn't the least but apologetic when my dirty place mat, which I'd put on a spare seat, was eventually taken away. Fabulous selection of teas which took some time to read and decide on our 2 choices. Our party all chose The Duchess option. The Guiness stew was a big hit on this cold day simply delicious. The marble sandwiches and croissants were less than fresh, as well as being large and not what I'd expected of a 'high tea'. Unfortunate that the sandwiches still had the crusts on them which is atypical for a British tea. The rest of the tiers (scones and sweets) were excellent- both fresh and delicious. Overall, despite lots of effort being put towards this very unique tea experience, we left feeling like it fell a bit short of our expectations. I would hands-down give our stay here a five (5). Our room was amazingly beautiful, more so than the pictures on the website reflected. When I first saw our room, it was the two bedroom suite, my heart was filled with joy. My husband and I both liked the bed and found it to be both nice and comfortable. The sitting room in our suite was furnished with antique pieces that complimented each other. It was so nice to be able to sit in there and drink our tea and coffee and visit or sit there quietly if we chose to. The toiletry area was also considerably large and the water pressure was amazing. To top it off, our hosts were great! They worked hard to provide both a quality experience and place for us to stay during our three day stay there. Her husband was very jovial and made us and laugh countless times. We enjoyed our breakfast all three days and I loved fixing my hot tea with their tea set pieces. If we went back to this area again, we would definitely go back and would choose the same room. What an absolute surprise and delight it was! read more

A personal and lovely bed and breakfast well located for a getaway to the New England coast or fall foliage. At the same cost as a chain hotel it's a bargain. The silver fountain gives you just what you want in a BB: nice, warm people and an interesting old house. Our first floor room was beautiful with a giant canopy bed so high you needed stair steps to get to it (steps included!). My moms room upstairs was equally wonderful with mahagony paneling and butter yellow colors. The decor is authentic like it came from a great aunts house. The house itself (1871 build) has so many intricate details from Italian hand carved plaster ceilings to jewel-like crystal doorknobs. Two of the three of us loved the beds--- cushy and enveloping mattresses but not ideal if you prefer a firm beds. We were there on a hot august day and the AC units were adequate-- just --more of an issue with our first floor room. Breakfast included several options with fresh baked breads and quiches. The coffee was also amazing though they have literally hundreds of teas available in the drawing room any time for guests. They have a high tea we wish we could have stayed for. Homemade pastries and Devonshire cream. We will be back! read more

I took my daughter here for high tea for her birthday, it's absolutely beautiful and the staff are fabulous. It was a real treat for us to get dressed up and do something Fancy, the food was delicious, the tea was absolutely wonderful. We found out they do murder mystery nights, just one more big plus. I went here with my daughters back in 2020 and we decided that it was the perfect place for a baby shower. The pandemic hit so we had to cancel. Fast forward to 2023. My daughter is pregnant with her second child so we surprised her with a "sprinkle". Everyone was impressed by how wonderful everything was. It was so elegant. Pamela was very attentive to myself and my friend on Thursday afternoon this past week. The ambiance is lovely, a Victorian air in the midst of Dover with lovely old antique furniture, bone china cup and saucers and of course lots of tea sandwiches and desserts on a very extensive menu. I had some pumpkin pie tea and it was awesome, my friend Dreamy Tuscany tea, which was a combination of blackberry and lavender! It was awesome. I loved the scones, Cardamon and Pear with devonshire cream and lemon curd and it melted in my mouth. Moist and delicious, the feast was delightful and we were able to sit at a window seat and enjoy every bite and sip in a most magical way. I will very definitely come back to this place when I return to visit, a real gem in the midst of the city. read more

We are staying with our daughter in Durham, just a few miles down the road so this review is for the high tea, only. All three of us wanted to have their high tea. We chose the formal "Duchess of Bedford" style of afternoon tea. Much to my delight we all got to choose the tea of our choice rather than one kind, The tea came out first and was put in small pots on individual warmers. Next was the three tiered silver tray. The lower tier had four different tea sandwiches: an egg salad croissant, a turkey and cheddar sandwich on wheat bread, a walnut cream cheese on white bread, and a basil and artichoke melt on herbed bread. The egg salad was elegant, but standard. The turkey and cheddar OK. The ladies favorite was the Walnut and Cream Cheese and mine was the basil and artichoke melt. We three agreed that these two were our first or second choices as best tea sandwiches. The middle tray had lemon blueberry scones with lemon curd. It was the best scone I have ever had. The top tray were the dessert sampling, all of which were scrumptious. There were peach & blackberry cakelet, lavender earl gray cheesecake, strawberry champagne shortbread and petit four, It was a fun experience in an old elegant mansion with period furnishings. read more

I had to ask for clean towels, we made the bed, & I put trash outside the door to let housekeeping know. The staff was generally friendly except the 1 housekeeper we saw who didn't even look at us. The breakfast was pretty awful. I've stayed at many b&b's - this was so poor. The baked goods were grocery store bought, breakfast entrees were either under or over cooked. Walking inside there were many gift baskets on eating tables, and buffets. Beautiful basket but very cluttered. We walked in clueless where to go as you stand right at dining tables. Finally a woman asked could she help. Told her we had reservations, gave her our name and she said she does not recall the name, said she would check, and walked away, we stood there she came back asked another couple that arrived their name while remembering their name she took them to their seat. She sat us, gave us menus. First time here so was a bit clueless how this all worked. Asked for our order, we choose the larger size so we could try dessert, smaller plate doesn't include dessert. It was Wizard of Oz theme. I am sorry great idea but the platter was very disappointing and $38.00 a person, crazy and comparing to other high teas we have been to. We got a wonder-bread cut in a heart shaped sandwich with a cream cheese spread. A tortilla wrap about an inch long on a lollipop stick, a croissant with maybe a curried ham salad, scone with cream and jam, they were very good, for dessert A mini tiny cup with green jello (cute for wizard theme), a poppyseed cup cake and sugar cookie with a sticker of a wizard of Oz character on it. We order tea, (great selection of teas) never saw waitress back to ask how things were, or get our second tea, waited and waited after we were done, she asked did we want our second tea, we were tired so she gave us the tea leaves to go. Once they deliver a tray they put by your table I could not get out to use the restroom, had to wait as she deliver the bill I asked could the tray be removed so I could get out. We came here for our anniversary thinking it would be special. Such a shame as it has great promise but afternoon high tea usually has incredible array of foods With excellent presentation. We wrote to the place giving our thoughts always feeling should contact place first before going on yelp, never heard anything back. Please take notes as this place could be a real gem. What a wonderful treat! We had a lovely Christmas luncheon here complete with a harpist playing softly in the background. The menu is fixed in December with a wonderful selection that included carrot apple soup, a tart, pinwheel, scones, four small desserts along with our tea. (See the menu photo for details.) There is a large selection of interesting teas, and they'll serve coffee as well. Everything was delicious, and they even had a large selection of gluten-free goodies for our gluten free companion. The Inn is gorgeous and was beautifully decorated for Christmas. The service was efficient and hospitable. The whole experience was well worth the $30/person price. My 94-year old mother loved it. For folks with mobility issues, there is a ramp in the back. It enters into a bedroom, so you might want to ask when you make reservations to make sure the room is vacant and you can use the ramp. While the public bathroom is on the second floor, they offered a first-floor bathroom for my Mom to use . Take your Mom. Take your wife. Take your sister. Take your best friend. Take your co-worker or neighbor who helped you out. Make someone's day special and take them to the Silver Fountain Inn! We're already looking forward to our next visit. read more

The experience itself is lovely. It's a fun place to dress up & celebrate a special occasion. Their typical menu has a variety of options for meat eaters & vegetarian alike & you don't have to spend a lot of money if you don't want to. I recently made reservations for Mother's Day not realizing there was a pre-fixed menu (it was not listed on the regular menu for May) so was expecting the typical menu. When I arrived I saw that it was a special menu which was priced $38 per person for food I wouldn't have ordered- aside from a most delicious scone & clotted cream. Having worked in the restaurant industry for many years, I understand having back to back reservations is tricky to navigate. That being said any restaurant should make it clear when a reservation is made how much alloted time guests have to enjoy their time at the establishment especially if time is tight. Guest should not have their sever tell them to leave or warn them during their stay of what time the next seating is- both of which happened at our visit for Mother's Day. So while we had hoped for a leisurely time together, we felt rushed, unsettled & underwhelmed. Lastly we were sat at a large table that would seat 8 people (we were a party of 4) so half the table was set up for our party & the other half was set up with large gift baskets for sale which felt like we were simply eating at the gift shop. Perhaps the better use of such a large table would have been to sit the next party at the other end of the table rather than rush us out. My suggestion for the future would be to let guests know as soon as they place their reservation, how long their reservation is for & if there is a special menu (regardless of if there is a pop up on their website- there are many folx who will miss all of the extra info on a website or are simply not tech savvy). This way everything is crystal clear to guests & they know what they are paying for & exactly what to expect. read more

Can you say "attention to detail"? My boyfriend and I found this Bed and Breakfast through bbonline.com. We originally wanted to stay in Portsmouth, but we waited too long to book a hotel. We were slightly concerned about staying in Dover, but we soon realized that our worries were unfounded. Not only is the Silver Fountain Inn worth staying out-of-town for, but it's only a short drive to Portsmouth, where we found ample parking. I simply cannot say enough about the Silver Fountain Inn. The inn itself is gorgeous--an old home that has been very carefully updated and cared for. In addition, Susan, who runs it, is wonderful. She has great attention to detail--everything from the DVD library to the little soaps in the room to the teapots & teas provided impressed us. The room we stayed in was immaculate, and the sheets were the softest I have ever felt. The breakfast was gourmet--seriously--and we were even offered a choice between two options. I would go out of my way to stay at the Silver Fountain Inn again. It is a must-stay. read more

Super cute place. The cinnamon bun was Devine. We got lunch and I had a grilled cheese and soup while my husband got the chicken and waffles. My soup was really good. The grilled cheese and the chicken and waffles were cold with make up to us it was clear they had been sitting for a while before they made their way us. Everything else was great though. We were visiting Dover for the first time for my niece's graduation. Often we choose accommodations thru AirB&B but we decided to stay at the Silver Fountain Inn & we loved it. I've stayed in B&Bs before & I have to say this was one of the nicest I've been to. We had room 2, The Chamber, it has a 4 poster canopy KING bed. The room is well appointed with beautiful Victorian style furniture & very large. It included a trundle day bed, an armoire & nice desk area & two sitting chairs all in gorgeous peach & gold colors & lots of painted crown molding and wood work. The bathroom is big too & accommodates handicap accessibility . We also had a separate entrance and lovely little sitting area outside to enjoy part of the garden with a slope walkway for rolling our luggage out to the car. Plus a romantic electric fireplace, great WIFI and TV. There was also a separate sitting area right outside our room that we could have used for reading and enjoying coffee but we decided to sit on the lovely porch and enjoy the beautiful garden & awesome weather. The breakfasts were delightful as well. Pam, one of the hosts, offers 3 breakfast choices daily plus juice. She's an excellent hostess and cook. She had easy instructions for us to enter thru the keyless combo lock, as we walked thru the dining room, coffee & tea stations were available for 24 hour access plus some delicious macaroons. The house smelled wonderful too while she was baking fresh macaroons the next day. There is also a menu of extras that you can add for your stay & my fellow surprised me with rose petals thru out our room on our last night. It was very romantic and such a nice touch. Pam & Jim have thought of everything to make our stay lovely! I highly recommend choosing the Silver Fountain Inn for luxurious accommodations for a extremely reasonable price! read more

I'd give ten stars if I could. The inn is beautiful. It's in a house with a lot of history and number of the original decorations, and hearing Pam explain everything was fascinating. We were in the English Rose room for a weekend. The room was nice, decent amount of space and comfortable bed. The breakfasts are great. Make sure if you stay here you book afternoon tea - it's a fun experience and a nice way to just relax early afternoon. This is a great location - you're a half hour from most of the NH seacoast and southern Maine. Maybe 20 minutes from Durham and UNH. The only downside I could see are the stairs are a little narrow, so if you have mobility issues I'd call to get a ground floor room instead of trying to book online. Overall excellent experience, one of the best B&B's I've ever stayed in. Can't recommend highly enough. read more

Finger sandwiches were made on stale bread and were lacking taste and effort. One was essentially wonderbread with cream cheese on it and nothing else. The mushroom and cheese sandwich was promising but the mushrooms were musty tasting- past their prime. Downton abbey soundtrack is piped through speakers on a loop. Interior is showing signs of wear and not in a charming Victorian way. Server screwed up the bill and it took ten minutes to figure out and then they made sure to charge us for the rest. read more
