After walking around the main square, we went down a quaint little side street and stumbled upon this unassuming sandwich shop. The owner greeted us out front and told us he wanted to make us the best sandwich we've ever tasted. He said if we didn't like the sandwich, it would be free. We decided to give it a try, and I'm so glad we did. Not only is the owner one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, but his sandwiches are absolutely delicious! I can't even tell you what was in them, but they were incredible. Now every time we're in Brussels, we'll be stopping by Tonton Garby for a friendly visit, and a delicious sandwich.

The owner is so passionate and friendly and tries to strike up a conversation with every single customer, no matter where they're from. I thought the customer service was next level. As for the sandwich, I want to preface that I don't eat regular sandwiches. I'm super picky and usually just get meat and cheese. NOTHING else. So his sandwiches weren't really my style. They looked very good but I know I wouldn't enjoy it if I just ordered off the menu. He puts a ton of fruits and cheeses into your sandwich and asks a bunch of questions of what you like before putting it together. I went for a blue cheddar cheese and since I wasn't getting anything else, he cut a gigantic chunk for my sandwich. The only downside is I think the only meat he uses is small salami slices. He put in triple the amount he usually puts but the cheese still took over the whole sandwich (I ended up buying more meat from the grocery store to fill it up). Every sandwich he makes is the same price and comes with a drink. I wanna say that his normal sandwiches are probably amazing. Mine was okay after I added all the meat into it. I also didn't eat it right away. But I think the customer service itself should receive 5 stars.

We were able to make selections from over 100 different cheeses as well as a variety of cured meats. The sandwich rivals my other fave from Alain Alain in Paris. It's a small but charming and quintessential Belgian shop. Traditional in every sense of the word. Simply put, it's a cheese lover's paradise. Catherine is extremely kind and patient as are her employees. They offer the ability to taste samples before making decisions. They're very helpful with making said decisions as well. A haven for like minded cheesemongers means the line can sometimes go out the door, especially at lunchtime. It is well worth the wait because so much love and care goes into every transaction with every customer. A most divine experience indeed.

Was so looking forward to our return trip to Brussels and visiting Catherine's. Over our week long stay we managed 3 visits to pick up cheese, freshly sliced deli meat, bead and made to order sandwiches. The cheeses that we selected were so very fresh and the selection to choose from was amazing. Of course my favorite was the truffle. We picked up sandwiches on two occasions and they were basically the same. The second one Catherine added a new little taste with the addition of three small roasted peppers. We had forgotten to ask for arugula and Catherine asked if we wanted it on this one...what a memory. Catherine's is a small place and always very busy. Quality shines throughout. The customers are almost all locals...another great sign. We noticed that when there were about three people inside that the patrons formed a line out of the door. Think out of respect for Catherine. Wish we had had a quality shop like Catherine's in metro Atlanta. We would drive to experience this and here in the hustle and bustle of Brussels there is a gem. Highly recommend. For dining-in, we were told to grab and menu and our choice of beverage from the refrigerator and then sit on a table in the back. Pretty soon, a server showed up and we placed our order. The sandwiches were both delicious and filling. Well worth the Euro 8.30 for each sandwich. Total bill for our lunch (2 adults) was Euro 23: a bargain for such a delicious and filling lunch. They charge a little more for eat in which I didn't really understand and most were taking the sandwiches to go. Would definitely eat here again.
