I am the type of person that sees any type of bread and I can definitely swallow it whole if I'm defending it's virtue from someone else! Most recently, for Easter, I was struggling to find the fruitless hot cross buns. I had gone to quite a bit of places and looked and with no luck, couldn't find any. Then I remembered my favourite bread stop (that I do tend to avoid) and headed there for the yummy breakfast treat! No doubt in my mind that they had them, I left with 2 packs of 6 hot cross buns and had happily paid for EFTPOS! Such a convenient factor when I don't tend to carry cash with me. The staff at this place are quite annoyingly friendly... Definitely not a bad thing considering they probably need to be to deal with all the grumps that may wander in there for their morning bread dosage.

Yummmmmmmmmmmmm. A little request though... this place really isn't for sitting with your laptop. Drives me crazy to see a place this good with packed to the rafters and waitstaff run of their feet but a whole line of folks sitting on their own with laptops or the paper. If you're not eating or drinking, you're not a customer and you owe them rent. Sunday afternoons see Grocery Bar play host to live music of all sorts of persuasions. All of the employees are cheerful and kind, happy to explain anything on the menu and give recommendations. More than just your average pita place, when you go up to order you'll notice that their display cabinet is also packed full of delicious pastries, from baclava to gluten free cakes. The only savoury food I've ever ordered is their falafel pita, which is pretty addictive. It comes in a small and large size, and I've always found that the smaller one is enough of a meal for me! It comes stuffed with chopped salad, sauce and pickles in a warm pita, and it's the perfect meal to grab on the walk home from the train station. The baclava is also absolutely delicious, and really hits the spot after the salty crunch of the felafel. If you're not sure what to order don't be scared to ask the staff what they like! They're always happy to tell you what the most popular meal is, as well as their favourite pastry of the day. You can grab some food to go or hang around, there's no shortage of seats indoors and outside. I pressed it to my nose and inhaled, I squished it between my fingers, I took another bite, chewed, and heard the crisp crunch of the crust. I tried it over and over again. My brain was saying, this can't be real. But it is, because it's in my hands, in my mouth. It was the sourdough bread that, until now, I only read about - made by famous bakeries, or in cook books describing the perfect result. It was the best sourdough bread I've ever had. I've tried to make my own sourdough bread many times before, so I know how hard it is to make a decent one, and nearly impossible for amateurs to make the perfect one. In my first visit to any bakery, I always buy their sourdough bread. For me, this is the standard by which I will judge them. Between Auckland and Melbourne, over the years, I have tried sourdough bread from dozens of artisans bakers - most of them good, some really good. But the sourdough loaf from Ox the Baker is the one to rule them all.
