Oh my gosh. I could not believe what I was tasting. My first thought was - I should turn around and buy another loaf from Ox the Baker. Instead, I focused on the warm bread in my arms, as I walked down Clarendon Street this cold, cold morning.
I stared at the piece of bread in my right hand. I pressed it to my nose and inhaled, I squished it between my fingers, I took another bite, chewed, and heard the crisp crunch of the crust. I tried it over and over again. My brain was saying, this can't be real. But it is, because it's in my hands, in my mouth. It was the sourdough bread that, until now, I only read about - made by famous bakeries, or in cook books describing the perfect result. It was the best sourdough bread I've ever had.
I've tried to make my own sourdough bread many times before, so I know how hard it is to make a decent one, and nearly impossible for amateurs to make the perfect one.
