Review Highlights - The Coffee Cottage

Today I tried the cinnamon buns, rather reluctantly because most bought are not good.

We're traveling through on Vacation and saw a sign for Darkwoods from Highway 2 and figured it was…read moretime for a break. Plus a place that does Beer and Coffee in the same name caught our curiosity. Cute place, easy to find with outside curb appeal had us walking right in ready to sit and get it done. When you come in, if you're eating, they hand you menus and you seat yourselves. There is a combination of Hightop and Regular height Tables. If you are just grabbing Coffee, Beer, Baked Goods, etc To Go, just head to the Counter. I kept it pretty simple with their Citrus Beer which was nice and light with no aftertaste. Perfect surprise for me during daytime, especially since I generally drink darker Beers like Porters. I had the DW Smash Burger Special for Lunch and it was just great! The Burger was huge with two beautifully seared Patties, nice and crispy around the edges, but the inner parts still juicy with two Cheese Slices, very Cool & Crisp Lettuce, a hefty Tomato Slice, nice Caramelized Onions, and their Condiment Sauce, which I could quite figure out everything in it. Basically, the Burger was a solid choice I would have again if coming back this way. Absolutely, no dissatisfaction. My friend is a bit more of a picky eater and I really appreciate the Staff being able to accommodate her with what turn out to be a really good Grilled Cheese. Made on Rye with Fried Egg, Gouda & Chedder cheeses, this looked amazing when it came to the Table with a side of Slaw. I got to try a bite and WOW...I would have been happy with that too. To sum this up, Beer...Good, Food...Really Good, Service... Outstanding

We ordered deep fried pickles, chicken wings, and 2 tacos. And a citrus ale. Beer was great. Food…read morewas mediocre. Atmosphere felt like summer camp. Lots of cheap wood and bright light. I think there was only one person working so she did a great job.

Was super surprised to find this gem when Googling place to eat Red Deer for my day trip here…read more Easy to find IF you use Google Maps. Can see the barn from the road. Lots of parking. Lots of things for the kids to play on. Patio looks sparse and a little uncomfortable on those tiny chairs. So many cool trinkets to see here. Unique for sure. Staff were very friendly but not great with water refills. Not too busy at a Sunday at 12pm (50% full). Friend loved his Reuben but felt the soup was mostly broth. Another friend got the kettle chips and they literally looked like plain Ripple wavy potato chips. My salad was amazing, vinaigrette wasn't too sour which was perfect. Needed chicken for sure. Salad greens were fresh, but the beets seemed lackluster. Overall a wonderful place for a coffee date, couples date, Sunday brunch with your mom, or just to see the trinkets and have a light lunch.

Things have changed at this former hidden gem. Prices have gone up and service has gone down. Three times now I have been there with friends when this woman proceeds to bring out the vacuum- which you can hardly hear yourself talk above - then the mop and bucket with the obnoxious smelling cleaner all while you are trying to visit with friends and finish eating. There is nothing worse in a restaurant and no excuse for it. I don't care if we are the only customers left , you wait until you close before cleaning the floor, it is rude and shows no regard for people that have paid to be there. I hope this changes but I and my friends will not be back to find out.
