Mark Roberts Dental Surgery occupies a position of prominence on Splott Road. Being in the centre…read moreof this commercial area of Splott makes a visit to the dentist an entirely convenient exercise, even if its not exactly as alluring as the deli, or the florist! This area is served by a number of buses (No's: 10, 11, 12), and there's free on street parking if you prefer to drive. Mark Roberts Dental Surgery are an NHS dentist, making the service they provide a lot more affordable than private dental health care, especially for those on benefits. The stock a good selection of information and leaflets explaining costs and provisions, as well as leaflets promoting dental insurance, (this can be bought for as little as £7.50 a month)... very useful! I recently had a crown returned to where it was meant to be, (I somehow managed to ping it a little too hard whilst flossing, and the darned thing made a bid for freedom, scurrying off across the floor and nestling itself amid a pile of reading material that is often to be found piled up beneath my sink). I was given a check up and the crown was glued back in place, and instead of the usual hideous prices, I was only charged £16.50 for the lot! (I would have paid in excess of £70.00 at my old private dentists!).
Twenty-three years ago Mark Roberts was younger and my child was born with problems with her teeth…read more We've been visiting him every six months ever since. He was fantastic with my daughter when she was tiny and all the way through her childhood. We all switched to going to Mark Roberts. He's very non- interfering. If it doesn't need doing he won't make you have it done. He pandered to my paranoia about having my wisdom tooth removed and filled it lots of times even though he did think it should come out. Eventually I gave in and actually it was hardly bad at all. I know the dentist isn't ever actually fun, but having one you can trust is most important. Twenty-three years later we still trust him.

When it comes to anything medical I'm a bit of a wuss, however my experiences with my dentist at…read morethis surgery mean that when my annual check up rolls by (far too quickly for my likeing), I'm never too worried. I personally go too see Huw DeLloyd (though there are other dentists practicing at this surgery), and find him to be a good thorough dentist, who is always patient with my anxiety. What I particularly like about Huw is that as a relatively newly qualified dentist he is incredibly aware of all new and recent procedures, knowledge which believe me can make a world of difference. As for the surgery it's recently been refurbished and is incredibly modern and trendy (as dental surgeries go), and plenty of new dental gadgets seem to have appeared since the last time I came. There's also your usual seating area and assortment of magazines and the reception staff are just absolutely lovely. If you're new to Cardiff and looking for a new dentist, I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this surgery.
I finally submitted to the pain of a raging abcess and went to see a dentist almost 15 years ago…read more The dentist was local and plucked from the Yellow Pages. The one condition had to be they were prepared to put me to sleep to have any treatment including check-ups. What a lucky break I have been going faithfully to see Nicola for the last 15 years and have never missed an appointment. The surgery staff are very helpful and there is an air of calm everywhere. When I finally had my abcess done Nicola said I would drift off and wouldn't remember a thing. As I was going under I was worried as nothing seemed to be happening. I tugged her arm and said "Cardiff City won the FA Cup in 1927 I'm still here..." then thankfully woke up to an abcess free life. I think I fell in love with her then... I started going to the surgery when it was still at it's City Road address. The move to West Grove a few years ago has been a positive one from my point of view. The only negative point is that we have had to move reluctantly from an NHS dentist to a private practice. I think Nicola held it off as long as possible before giving in to harsh financial reality. I get a lot of information from the surgery and organise my visits by email which is great for me.

Seeing as I…read morehadn't been to a dentist in a number of years, and the last time I saw one was at hospital when they pulled the tooth (see my review on the university hospital), I thought it would probably be a good idea to get myself a dentist in the city centre. After asking around I was directed to this little street just off of St Mary Street. I gave them a call, explained I didn't have a dentist and that I would be paying for treatment. I soon had my appointment and couldn't wait to go and see the dentist (there was a sarcastic tone which you probably didn't detect there, I hate visiting the dentist). What I found was that the waiting times were fairly short provided you arrived on time, after filling out a form I was soon in the dentists chair and this guy had his hands in my mouth checking out my pegs. He advised me that I would need some fillings and that he was quite surprised my teeth were in such good condition considering how long I had left it until now. He then told me I could make an appointment at reception for the fillings and also to visit the hygienist upstairs. I was surprised when the receptionist told me I could go straight up to the hygienist as there was a time slot available immediately. I left here with bight, shining white teeth, feeling a million dollars and confident that my return visit in approximately one weeks time would be as painless as possible. And it was too. This is a very good dentist, and I don't like dentists in the slightest so take from that what you will.

Yeah, I know - weird opening paragraph. Moving swiftly on... This is my local dentist's practice, and as such, I have no objection to paying a bit for convenience - I am a sadly sedentary man. It is not, after all, an NHS practice (apart from for children as their dental care is NHS funded in Wales as health is a devolved issue). In my years of loyal service and even more fervent evasion of the dental hygienist (she likes to poke you in the gums for not flossing), I have had exactly zero causes to complain. Dr Clarke even managed to get an irritating wisdom tooth out (top right) without so much as halting my plans for world domina - I mean casual internet browsing, yes. He's always full of exciting trivia, remembers key facts from my life and that of my wife, and even recalled the North African connection briefly touched upon in passing a few years back whilst sorting a malocclusion formed by me chomping my teeth together whilst I slept. Plus, he likes my dog (or at least pretends to) and that is reassuring. The fact that he is continually referring me to the dental hygienist (my objections notwithstanding) is not particularly troublesome, other than it means paying twice - once for the routine checkup and once for the awful pain of pointy inter-dental brushes and the nasty taste of that purple mouthwash. Prices vary according to treatment, but I paid £22 in June 2010 for the privilege of a quick World Cup update and the pronouncement that we'll keep an eye on my enamel erosion. In conclusion, I would recommend them highly for no nonsense, professional dentistry, even if their Mountain Biking magazines are sadly out of date.

You find yourself in a cosy hallway and front room waiting room, where there are coffees (lattes, americanos, cappuccinos) and soft drinks on offer. There is also free wi-fi, should you feel the need to Yelp while you wait. The waiting room has a bay window to trees outside, so is an exceptionally lovely and calming space to wait in. The receptionist is lovely, and has that rare ability to make idle chat seem genuine. When you're actually in the chair, there's a screen showing undersea documentaries to distract you from all other goings on. The service is always relaxed, friendly, and very professional. You are not pressured into getting any extra work done, as I've heard a few people complain about with private care, and the price is far more reasonable than what other people I know have paid. In short, this is a dentist I'm not scared to phone up and get an appointment at.

Was very understanding with how worried I was and calmed my nerves. ~ Dentist: My dentist was Ruth and she was the best dentist I've ever dealt with. She was both friendly and no-nonsense, dealing with my lump straight away. Nearly cried with joy when she told me that it was non-cancerous (was muscle fibers). I have a strong gag reflex so it's difficult for me to do x-rays. I let Ruth know this and she was very understanding. The last dentist I went to kept getting annoyed with me when I gagged, even though it was something I obviously couldn't help. On the other hand, Ruth gave me tips on how to breathe properly to try and not gag and she was very encouraging! Another positive was that she was very thorough with her explanations of everything (which muscle my lump is, etc.) For £30 as a new patient including 2 x-rays, the price isn't bad either.
