This place is amazing. Came from America to London on Holiday and one of the things we had to do was a Sunday Roast. I searched and searched all over, I read countless reviews and came across Colonel Fawcett. I called ahead and told them what time I was coming and that we were looking for a Sunday Roast. Once there they did not disappoint. Their drinks were on point and the food was amazing. Now the atmosphere and Ambiance was amazing as well. The Chef actuality came out and spoke with us. Now being American, I have only this Sunday Roast as our only time of enjoying one. But for what I have read of what a Sunday Roast would be this was amazing. If I can be that review that helps you out the most please follow these 2 words of advice. 1) if you want a True Sunday Roast go here!!!! 2) Call ahead or go early CAUSE THEY SELL OUT of Sunday Roast's!!!!! This homey, festive local pub has hosted many cozy evenings for me and my friends and always guarantees a delicious Sunday roast. CF has been around since the early 1800s and displays a rich history of debauchery and over-indulgence. It's named after an old patron who died via duel on the property itself, and was once a frequented location for Camden's drunken criminals. It is well worth the trek to Camden for Colonel Fawcett's Sunday roast. And if you come, stay for some pudding. The roast is served from 12-8 and there were few other diners when we arrived at 1 but many others by the time we left, closer to 3. I'd say if you plan to get there after 2:30, try to make a booking. Colonel Fawcett serves a proper vegetarian roast and it sounded so good that I was tempted to order it. Luckily I went with the lamb (£16). It is a pulled lamb, super moist, and comes with a very vibrant mint sauce. My friend did order the veggie roast (£13) which had all the same sides --roasted potatoes, steamed kale, roasted carrots and Yorkshire pudding-- but in place of the meat had roast beets, some mushrooms and a ton of grated and saucy zucchini. The only part of the roast I didn't particularly like was the Yorkshire pudding which was just a little too hard/crunchy. Everything else blew me away and considering the price was hardly more than any of the normal portioned meals I had in London, I thought it was an absolute steal. I also ordered the bread pudding (£5) which the menu claimed had dates in it but they looked and tasted like raisins. It came with a warm butterscotch sauce and double cream ice cream. I don't even like raisins and I thought the bread pudding was outstanding. The may have been mostly because of the accompaniments but damn, that was a good dessert. I could literally have eaten an entire bowl of the ice cream by itself and could probably have eaten two bowls of the ice cream with the caramel sauce on top. The bar/restaurant itself is also super cute. We sat outdoors in a covered booth, though there is an uncovered patio area as well. It would be nice if there was no smoking in the covered section since it gets trapped in there and you spend your entire meal breathing in cigarette smoke. Overall, this was an excellent meal. I'm so glad I read Lauren's review and found the perfect Sunday roast in an area (or at least in a restaurant) that isn't overrun by tourists. read more

Today was a fortunate day. What a cool spot. While waiting for my fiancé while he got some work done nearby, looked for somewhere to hang my hat. Boy, did I come up. Started with one of their 100+ gins. Was recommended a berry influenced, super palatable Brockman's. With a wedge of grapefruit, was one of the most easy to drink gin and tonics I've ever had in my entire. life. Then an open face mushroom and poached egg sandwich and some fish goujons and chips. Simple but clean flavors. Ingredients seemed fresh and chosen with care. And updated, non fussy take on good food. Service was also amazing. Lucky neighborhood to have a gem like this. read more

Five stars for the two dishes I tried and for having a cool interior, ambiance and trendy vibes that elevated this from the normal pubs in the area (even though the music was annoying, sounded like a low quality recording track of beats and generic background music... and when the pub is full the chatter is VERY loud and you have to yell to converse!). I've had the chicken and the fish and it's probably the best pub food I've had in London! The chicken was one of the best I've had (at any restaurant - so moist and flavorful). The fish was something I craved every day for the rest of the week, and returned for. Was packed on a Thursday night (before 7pm). If you want to socialize and be in a trendy pub with energy, this is the spot for you. If you want a delicious meal maybe avoid the busy drinking hours. read more

On our trip to London we found this pub near our rental and since they had outdoor seating we thought it a perfect spot to hide away with all our many suitcases while we waited for the unit to be available. And man we are so glad we did! They were extremely nice and the food was delicious. Like truly mouth praising yumminess. The four of us each got something different, the curry, the duck, the chicken, and fish and chips and it was all scrumptious! We have a friend who is gluten free and they were extremely accommodating! The heaters outside were perfectly nice with the chilly weather. The bartender chatted with us about our visit and ordering gin drinks (the specialty of the bar) and the decor is perfect. Our favorite place, the only place we went twice on a 7 day stay! read more

A great local pub is a delightful thing. I've been living in Camden for, ooh, fifteen years now, and the Colonel Fawcett is the best thing to come along in my neighbourhood in all that time. Once upon a time, and for a long time, this was the Camden Arms, an authentic local institution, if a slightly undistinguished boozer. Other local pub options included the Constitution (with its nice canalside garden), the Old Eagle (with a slightly less nice beer garden), and a depressing place opposite Camden Road station that eventually became the more upmarket Mac Bar and finally a branch of the Grand Union chain. Because it was the only place you could get a decent pub lunch for a while, I used to go to the Mac Bar/GU now and again, but that stopped when the Grand Union started to specialise in very tall burgers that have to be deconstructed with a knife and fork before they can be eaten. ANYWAY: the Colonel Fawcett came along a while back and is nigh-on perfect. The main bar is both cosy and airy, with the usual eclectic mix of mismatched wooden chairs and tables you see in pubs, and a couple of leather sofas. Out the back there's a smallish beer garden with sheltered tables to keep you out of the rain, and upstairs is a great big room that is used for functions, parties, and the odd bit of live sport on a big screen. There's a good variety of booze; the Fawcett makes a big thing of its gin selection, although I'm not a gin fan myself, and they offer a good range of draught and bottled beers. The staff are charming. What I really want to talk about though is the food. The food is seriously good. Weekday lunch specials are about £7 for a main course, a tenner if you want some soup as a starter. Bar snacks include a terrific homemade Scotch egg, little sausages, croquettes of various kinds, and pork crackling. There's a very good burger which can be consumed, as nature intended, with the hands. And then there's more serious restaurant-y cooking going on - the catch of the day is always worth a look. I rarely stretch to a dessert - they do a great cheese board - but they've always been very good when I have. On weekends, a brunch menu takes in egg/bacon/muffin-related classics, as well as an excellent Full English, and the Sunday roast is the best I've encountered within at least a couple of miles. If I have one complaint about the cooking it's that they've never quite cracked chips; they tend to be the chunky skin-on types that smack a little of laziness. Frites please! Basically, the Fawcett - which I can see from my bedroom window, tempting me - is making me both poorer and fatter. But happier. Definitely happier. I'm so glad that this pub is not along any of the main streets in Camden, keeping it a somewhat safe secret for the time being. You really need to know where you're going in order to find it. It's generally got a crowd, but not too busy. Except when supper club is on - beware of that because you'll be unable to move until they all go upstairs and it's a lot less pleasant to hang around. The beer selection is good. Meantime on tap plus rotating ales. The gin collection is intimidating, but they're happy to help you with it. I'm finally getting around to reviewing this place because I've just had their food for the first time. Aside from a couple of super posh takes on the scotch egg, I have to say this is the best one I've had. It's perfect, and the pickled cauliflower and veg it's served with is amazing. Nice little neighbourhood pub with a huge gin list. Huge. Think there is over 50. They have a happy hour 5-7 where you can get deals on gin cocktails, and in general they seem to offer a large range of cocktails suited to breakfast, lunch and dinner. The gin prices do not include the tonic and I would recommend fever tree tonic water as it tastes better and can spread over two glasses. Beer wise, they're not too crafty they have a good selection of large corporation. There's kozel, meantime, peroni etc. Food wise they do bottomless brunch for two hours over the weekend then they offer burgers etc. read more

I can't believe I haven't Yelped my beloved Colonel Fawcett. I also can't believe (almost) no one else has either. Cozy and dignified, the Fawcett is a casual pub with the perfect mix of charm and cool -- with great service to boot. They specialise in gin, and have big chalkboard right by the bar with their latest and greatest offerings spotlight versions. I was delighted to find Ophir on the board, which was paired with Fentiman's tonic (there are three tonics to choose from) and garnished with black pepper and an orange slice. These guys know and love their gin. But the don't forget the beer drinkers, and have a good selection of craft beers both on tap and bottled. We also enjoyed a couple Goose Island IPAs. The space is pretty big, with sofas, chunky tables/mismatched chairs, twinkly lights (limited use of - this place is dignified, remember?), an upstairs space for large parties and even a big beer garden with a covered section to protect from rain. Whoever is in charge of music here is my hero. A lovely mix of old and new, indie and classic, you may get some Chromeo, Rod Stewart, Haim, Modest Mouse, The Cure -- whatever it is, you can bet it's exactly what you want to hear right now. I've saved the best for last ... the food. That Scotch Egg is fabulous (don't let a long history of crappy Scotch eggs from other pubs deter you, this one is lovingly hand made and served with picilily). The bar menu is perfectly balanced and affordable: £4 for chips, 5 cheese croquettes, the aforementioned scotch egg, etc. And mains that hover around £15 and include wild trout, steak frites, risotto, shallot tart, baked hake. About an 8-10 minute walk from Camden Town tube station, and a worthwhile (if a tad out of the way) pit stop if you've been perusing Camden Market and want a beer and a sit down meal. read more

Freshest craft beer I've ever tasted in a pub, seriously it tastes almost like in a brewery taproom! They have 12 taps, including the week's Kernel Pale Ale (variating hops), Beavertown's Gamma Ray and Neck Oil, and a few rotating. Boo!!!!! We really liked this bar until tonight when we were 6 friends who spent the evening here, dinner and drinks, but when it came to splitting the 200+£ bill the bar tenders gave us about .25 seconds to organize before freaking out and demanding one of us take the entire bill and refusing we split. Shame to end an otherwise good evening on such poor service. Won't come back! read more

We booked the upstairs function room for my girlfriends 30th birthday. There was about 50 people there for the evening and the team couldn't have been more helpful. We had constant communication leading up to the day and the evening itself was fantastic. I can't recommend this venue enough for your function and would happily use them again for any future birthdays or the like. read more
