Work had an event here for team building. Definitely is really fun compared to the traditional dinner. So we were split into groups and we are each in charge of a dish or a course. So I did the Tom Yum Soup. Instructions were laid out in front of us. We had ingredients already or almost ready for us to start cooking. All we need to do is just to chop up the ingredients. We also had a theme. So we had the Vietnam dishes. I was in charge of making the Tom Yum Soup. It came out delicious. I really liked it. The other dishes were delicious too. Our instructor was Ching and she guided us in every step. Constantly watching how we cook. We had a great time. Everything went well. I also found out that every Friday they have couple's night cooking and Saturday they have classes for kids. At the end, I have to say it was fun. If you bring your own wine its cheaper but they have to pour the alcohol for you. Great team building event. read more

I like the staff here. Very helpful and always willing to assist you. On my last visit for spices for my French recipes the ladies were quite helpful in directing me to the proper sections. Got more than I was originally going for because they had other spices I had been looking for at their location. The store has a great collection of cookbooks, spices, kitchen equipment, specialty foods and equipment and lots to choose from from various nationalities. It is sometimes busy in there but line ups are generally not long. I inquired about French cooking classes and online ordering. They were kind enough to direct me to another spice supplier for items they did not carry which I appreciated very much. Definitely will be doing a lot more business with them, read more

I went to the Cookbook Co. Cooks for a Girl's Night Out cooking class with one of my girlfriends, and it was a high energy, fun evening that both of us enjoyed. The Girl's Night Out class is a hands-on course, that has us preparing and consuming 4 different cocktails, and six appetizers, and then having a good ol' fashioned pigout. There were many wins, and a few losses with taking this course that I wanted to share. Wins: My girlfriend Mary doesn't drink, so she got a $10 gift certificate for not drinking any booze Losses: I didn't get her drinks. Wins: The large class size for a woman's event was full of laughter, bantering, and of course, more hands to help chop and prepare our appetizers, so that got the cooking done faster, and left more time for eating. Losses: With a large class size, it was an ongoing challenge to get the attention of the instructor, or either of his two assistants. He was great and did his best, but it was frustrating at times. Wins: I'm not a huge lamb fan, but thanks to this class, I actually might prepare it. The burgundy soaked lamb chops with cilantro mint gremolata gave me shivers. The good ones... not the shudders. Losses: Wear long sleeves and shades when searing the lamb. Would I take a class here again? Absolutely. It was an amazing experience. My own personal opinion, is that I would take the demonstration class next time. This is my personal preference, because I didn`t realize with the hands on class that I would be preparing only one appetizers. The good news, we got 'er done, and it was fun. The bad news, is I did not see how the other yummy appetizers were prepared. We did catch glimpses. :) read more

This is a delightful find tucked into the back of the Cookbook Co. Cooks store, it may look like a restaurant but it is fact a cooking school. The organiser there was so incredibly friendly, she greeted me at the door, offered to take my coat and offered me a coffee. Tonight they were to have an Hors'D'ouerves class via a plasma screen and large mirror to see the class unfold. There were tables set to actually try it hands on themselves and then to feast later. Many students were arriving, a lot of them obviously regulars. There is a very warm ambiance here and classes range from to $65 to $135 classes. There is a huge array of classes to choose from, Italian, French, Mongolian, Mexican and Vietnamese, there are even classes for kids, and couples and my favourite the "Culinary Boot Camp Just for Men". The most appealing thing for me however is the guest teachers that are invited here. Expect the best from North America. How about Fresh's Anna Olsen or Chef at Home's Michael Smith. You'd think a born and raised Calgarian would know this place existed - NOPE! I've always seen the Cookbook Company recipe books when I'm standing in line at the grocery store, little did I know you can go somewhere and have someone teach you on how to cook the recipes! We went here for a team building activity for work, and it's such a great idea! Having fun with your coworkers by learning how to work together outside the office, and enjoying the meal you cooked together is a true bonding experience. It almost takes you back to those home ec days from High School! We got to make sage & prosciutto wrapped chicken, garlic green beans, mushroom risotto and lemon cream puffs for dessert. I've actually made the chicken quite a few times since I learned how to make it, it's so simple and delicious! If you're looking for a cooking class in Calgary, this is the place to go! A little bit pricey for a one-off class, but totally worth it. We went to a Friday night couples class and loved it. The class ran a BIT long (supposed to be done at 9:00, instead we were out of there at 10:30), so I suggest two things: 1. Don't make plans afterwards. 2. Make sure your babysitter is flexible. Anyway, Pierre was our chef and was great. He's really funny and really knows his stuff. The meal was a bit complicated and I can tell you we'll never be cooking it on our own, but the few valuable tips he taught us were well worth the price of admission. read more

I joined their A Couples Night Out cooking class and had a lot of fun. Our class included complimentary 3 glasses of wine, and San Pellegrino. I had a great time learning how to make things I normally wouldn't have the balls to make at home, like meatballs with pomegranate glaze and spatchcock chicken. Our instructor was energetic and engaging. The class made a five course meal and each couple was stationed to make one of the courses for the entire group. I suggest you get there early before anyone else to get dibs on a dish you really want to make. I wanted to learn gnocchi but was stuck with dessert. Unfortunately a hipster group got their grubby hipster hands on the gnocchi station first and given the choice to use whole wheat flour or all purpose, they chose the former and the gnocchi tasted awful. THEY RUINED GNOCCHI!!! I felt terrible for our classmates whose first time trying gnocchi was that night. The cooking classes are a treat at $100/person. It's worth trying at least once in your life but there's nothing they teach that YouTube can't. read more

This is solely a review of their cooking class. I took the Moroccan cooking class here a while back and I was not impressed. There were way too many people and it was difficult to get the attention of the instructor. Not that it actually mattered or anything. The recipes were way off. Even I know that poached chicken breast cannot possibly be used in anything Moroccan. Only the British Royal Family would eat something that bland and boring! The saffron they used was as good as food coloring. Ironically, the guy was explaining how the saffron everybody else is buying is probably fake! I would definitely recommend ATCO for their cooking classes. read more

I absolutely love the shop. It makes my mouth water and I want to get in the kitchen right away. They have an awesome selection of spices and spreads and pastas and jams - plenty of specialty stuff and inspiration to get you going. If only I had hundreds of dollars to spend re-outfitting my already outfitted kitchen with cuter versions of what I already have... If I was just rating the store I would probably give it a 5/5. The lower rating is from taking a Thai cooking class - which I did also like! But not enough to go and take another class. It was a pricey course, and my expectations were high. The food we ate at the end was delicious, the wine was tasty, and the atmosphere was pretty fun. My main complaint is that the class was kind of divided into sections - I happened to get the section that made a salad with canned ingredients. Other students made Pad Thai and fragrant soups, but I really felt like I didn't actually learn how to do much cooking. Had I been in another group I'm sure I would have left feeling very knowledgeable and satisfied, but as it was, I felt like I kind of just paid a whole lot for an admittedly delicious Thai meal. read more

I have both shopped here and taken a course here. I normally buy specialty items from here as it is a bit costly. Some of the great items I've found are: - frozen chocolate croissants in the freezer you can bake yourself - truffle pig chocolates from Burnaby BC - Chinook honey - they do have a location in okotoks but this is a lot closer and they carry a few kinds - maple syrup, the best one is in a bottle with a red wax seal... Amazing! - olive oils and spreads, every once in a while I'll find one to splurge on Their courses are good as well, except a bit overpriced. A lot of the pre work is done for you and you split up into groups so you don't get to try making everything. For a couple hour course and meal it's not bad, but I'd say try elsewhere if you're really trying to learn technique (SAIT has some good courses). I found this place more for a fun and enjoyable party in the kitchen with friends and family. Overall, I will still visit the Cookbook Cooks Co. regulary, but probably only for specialty items. read more

I can't believe I've walked past this place several times on my way to District without noticing it. Whatever utensil, spread, chutney, jam, spice you need for you kitchen, the Cookbook will have it. I attended their cooking class as part of a company get together. We definitely had fun and I picked up a couple tips. I don't think I would do it again. But that's just me! It's a well stocked plethora of anything your little kitchen may desire... and they stock Fentiman's Dandelion & Burdock soda too! I've been on the hunt for that in Calgary for months. As if that weren't enough, they host cooking classes too! Couples cooking classes, Thai classics, Italian, French... they range in price from $75-$150. A small but well stocked epicurean food and book store. Some frozen items like croissants and duck fat, but mostly focused on dry goods such as exotic spices, multicoloured dry pastas and terrine containers. We go here because it is one of the only places where you can buy Diamond Kosher Salt in Calgary. Co-located with Metrovino, so you can get both your ingredients and wine for a fancy night in in one stop. With regards to the cooking classes, be sure to ask if the class you're interested in will be hands on, as this is not always the case. read more

Honestly, the poorest customer service I've received from any venue thus far. My wife had to go in for surgery on the day of our cooking session, and the Manager simply advised us callously that its too bad...NO REFUNDS, there was not even an offer of a gift certificate for 50% off our another session. They were rude, inflexible, and lacking in any manner of customer service. I was simply told that they were a small company not able to offer any compensation, thus our money was forfeit. Very short -term business thinking. How companies choose to treat people speaks very highly (or poorly) of the manner they conduct their business. Would not recommend. read more

I make it a monthly trip from the burbs to splurge on some exotic spices and ingredients. Can loosely be compared to vancouver's Gourmet Warehouse, but alot smaller and as such, a smaller selection. They carry some outstanding Alberta sausages in the freezer, keep an eye for the rotating selection of seasonal rubs and spices, there is always something new. Not the best prices, but hey this is not superstore. They do carry the stuff that is hard to find or just a bit over the top. This concept is great for team building and just having some all around fun. If the staff would have made an effort this would be a much better review. We booked this for a group of about 20 people and were advised prior if we were not out by a certain time they would charge us extra. That was not an issue, I understand that there is a schedule to maintain and that is not unreasonable. What is unreasonable is that the so called "Chef" plates your food and controls the time of the meal service. The "Chef" we had took lots and lots of time to do this and we had to tell them to serve our dessert already. We were done cooking in plenty of time to enjoy our meal but because the "Chef" took way to much time to serve we felt we had to run out and did not even get a chance to have a tea or coffee that we paid for. When we arrived no one greeted us or gave us any direction so we stood around hoping that we would be given some direction. Nope, we finally took charge and asked someone when we would be starting and what needed to happen. When you are controlling the pace of my service and taking very long to do so, I do not feel it is fair to charge me for extra time, IMHO that was pretty shady and a money grab. When we inquired about the event we were advised that we would have a "Chef" to walk us through our menus and guide us through the process. What we got was a sheet of paper with the ingredients typed out and a very simple instruction on what to do. We split into teams and were not given any direction or advice let alone technique or timing on what we were doing. The 1 guy walked around to oversee things but gave very little instruction and even less direction. The guy we had seemed very limited in his knowledge and was more skilled at chatting with the kitchen staff than interacting with any of our groups. If you are giving me a line cook then at least tell me that so that I can set my expectation accordingly and not be disappointed. Thankfully our teams were on it so we had our own fun without the staff here and we got our meals finished in plenty of time. The ingredients we were given were ok but nothing out of the ordinary or special. The menu was fairly simple and they did accommodate for food allergies. There were lots of tools of the trade and things appeared clean. When we were running out the door because our time was up they were preparing for the next group and I was put off that they were using vegetables in bags and nothing was being washed. If you want a fun filled night then this is a great venue but be smart about it and make sure you are leading the staff here in the direction you want your event to go because they do not seem to have any order or direction. If you do want a skilled Chef to guide you through you may want to ask who you are getting and what their skills are. read more

Great class. I've taken 2 classes here one hands on and one demo. I actually liked the demo version better. Maybe it was the size of the group for the hands on but we only prepared 1 dish each so didn't get to see how the other dishes were prepared. The demo you get to see how all the dishes are prepared. Both are very good value for the money in the amount of food you get to sample. Left very very full. read more
