Well, according to Reddit they're the best, so I found out. Went down there from Hidden Valley and popped in for breakfast on SAT May 30. Took the wife down there for a surprise, she got the plain omelet and I got the bacon and egg on a croissant and a london fog and mocha for drinks and two more croissant to go ....... Easy enough to order, the place was busy, and great service but was it $50 bucks good ..... yes once ! :-) My only real question is who the hell pays $6.50 for one croissant? That was nuts - ok maybe for $10-15 in a sandwich like breakfast but NOT for one croissant. If they were the only game in town and you were Jonesing for one ok but no........ As a test the wife went to Costco the next day and grabbed a pack of theirs and to be honest we got 12 of them for $8.00 bucks or $67 cents each. Yes, the La Boulangerie is larger by 20% or so but $0.68 is a far cry from $6.50 for ONE croissant, now in looking at the neighbourhood and the nice cars driving by I get it - but no sorry not for me! Maybe if you were the French Ambassador to Canada and you grew up eating them you might notice a difference in taste or you're a molecular chemist and KNOW - otherwise they tasted the same. read more

Ever since we had kouign amann almost a decade ago in a French patisserie in Quito, Ecuador of all places, my husband has been on the hunt for the best kouign amann wherever we travel. The bad news is, there is no good kouign amann in Seattle or anywhere in the western US (so far, by our calculations). The fantastic news is that there IS stunningly delicious kouign amann in Calgary! I first balked at La Boulangerie because I had bookmarked two other bakeries to try. But I'm so glad we came here. Walking up to the storefront, I took in the quaint outdoor tables and the people enjoying a coffee and brunch. The first language I heard outside was French, which only added to the idea that we were in the right place. It wasn't busy when we walked to the counter at an off hour during the week, but I could see this place being slammed on a nice weekend. Do yourself a favor and take the time to look at all of the treats in the case. I had no idea which one to pick, but I'm so happy I went with the pear marzipan croissant - something I wouldn't easily be able to find at home. The savory breakfast crepes were tasty but could have been enhanced by a sauce on the side - the ingredients inside were a little dry. The Nutella latte was AH-MAZE-ING. Sweet, hazlenutty, but not overpowering. I immediately looked up a recipe for a future attempt to recreate it at home. The standout by far was the kouign amann, which comes in more than one flavor (insert mind blown emoji here). My husband chose a vanilla-filled one. Holy lamination. The layers, the glaze, the crunch. The vanilla cream filling was somehow both fluffy and delicately flavored yet sturdy enough to survive a day in the car. If I could fly back to Calgary every weekend just to buy a single kouign amann from this place, I would. Service was wonderful and we were surprised that that instead of calling our number, the staff walked each component of our order out to us. Highly recommend. We were here couple weeks ago and was looking for coffee and some sweet to go with it. This place pop up on our search. Came in and it had a little crowd so we though it must be good. Turned out not so. The pastries are dry and not good. The worse croissants I have eaten for awhile. Staffs are not too friendly neither. Wow definitely one of the better pastries I have ever tasted. This cafe is located in Mission, Calgary. I came on a Saturday and they were already closed (came at 6pm ish). I noticed the open sign was still lit up. I walked in and was told that I can get things to go but they are really closed. I did noticed that they had lots of pastries left over. So I ended up getting the pistachio chocolate croissant. It was super delicious. It wasn't like flaky but it was super tasty. Definitely one of the best croissants that I have ever had. They specializes in French pastries and desserts. I highly recommend trying their pastries. I am not sure about the coffee or drinks here. Also the croissant that I got was inexpensive. I paid with taxes and everything all in around $4. Before taxes it was $3.75. Definitely cheaper than Vancouver BC prices (this is rare in Calgary. Can't believe that I haven't gotten around to writing a review for La Bouglangerie yet. Oh well, better late than never. Almost everything on the menu is top notch. Crepes, sandwiches, pastries, cookies, and coffee are all amazing. The top thing they have is the kouign amann, my favorites being the nutella and dulce de leche but the original is outstanding as well. The bostock and croissants are also great. Honestly everything that I've tried has been above average to wonderful. It seems like you really can't go wrong with any choice from this place. read more

La Boulangerie is tucked behind Wurst on Mission. I did not get my bakery fix during my travels so I had to get some when I got home. Went Saturday morning around 11am and all tables were taken, so we got take away. I already had breakfast but I wanted some pastries, so we tried their Hazelnut Chocolate croissant and dark Callebaut chocolate & orange zest brioche. Both pastry was a bit dry and did not have the flavours I was expecting. The croissant was good but dry, it has the hazelnut but missing the taste of a croissant. The brioche was dry as well and very dense. I did not get the orange zest but got the chocolate. Overall, not too impressed. But they do have have a full menu hanging behind the counter and they also have crepes! Next time I come ill definitely try the crepes! Their drink menu looks amazing as well, they are very creative with their chocolate drinks. We wanted some baked goods before we hit the road and this was the closest location and one with good reviews. The patio is on a busy street so it was much louder than we hoped. I felt that my cafe au lait was good but nothing fantastic. The blueberry cheese Danish was really good. The pistachio eclair was not great - too sweet. And the fruit tart was alright. A few of the great attributes this little bakery/cafe/bistro has: - large selection of assorted pastries and breads, as well as a diverse array of quick breakfasts and lunch options from crepes to soup and sandwich specials. - quality ingredients used and generous sized portions - good location with ample parking and both indoor and outdoor seating - lovely Parisian style decor and ambiance Some of the drawbacks: - I ordered a large cappucino that cost nearly $6. For that price I would have expected it be large enough to serve in a latte bowl. But it was a fairly standard serving size. - ordered the apricot-almond tart for $7, again for the price I would have expected something more flavorful and larger than what I received. Delicious and warm and ooey-gooey inside!! - Goat cheese, roasted peppers, tomato & spinach Crepe - served on a crusty croissant. The insides was served cold. It was nice, light sandwich. - Sausage roll - Giant homemade sausage - delish! - Hazelnut tart - Love those individual hazelnuts in that nutty chocolatey tart! - New York Cheesecake tart - My favourite! Reminds me of New York with every bite! - Crème Brulee - Creamy! - Illy coffee - Who can go wrong with Italian coffee!! On a separate occasion, I've tried their Spinach and Feta Croissant and these things are huge & flaky and delicious! If you plan to go back to La Boulangerie, ask for a coffee loyalty card. Parking is quite different here. The bakery allows you to park for 20 mins if you can find assigned bakery parking but you can ask for 30 mins more if you need it at the restaurant. Located at 2435 4 Street SW and open at 6:30am every day but Monday, much like the best of France, La Boulangerie Bakery Café brings European craftsmanship and work-ethic to Western Canada with a collection of Pastries, Tarts and Viennoiserie that is far too vast to be explored in one visit, a total of eight items ranging from good to excellent only scratching the surface of what I'd like to have tasted. Surprisingly busy given the cold weather and early hour, at least two-dozen patrons passing through or sitting down to enjoy during my short stay, service waa smiling and helpful while seats were close-packed yet comfy, a small two-top near the door almost overloaded by a collection from which the Mozzarella and Sesame Croissant was sampled first - laminated layers shattering to the tooth just as they would in the Cream and Almond-filled versions later, but giving way to a gooey, cheese-lacquered center that melded perfectly with toasty Sesame notes and plenty of Butter. Admittedly not wowed by the Almond Croissant, thankfully not marred by Frangipane but also a bit too stingy with ground Almonds, expectations were met by a Kouign Amann awash with butter and a crackling Sugar bottom, the Canele going one step further and surpassing almost any outside of Europe in terms of crispiness overlying Custard, even if the outside lacked the traditional deep-brown polish. Setting aside the Cinnamon Roll, underflavored though well laminated like the rest, better bites were found amidst the sliced Croissant that stood up well the cream filling, the same to be said of crisp Choux surrounding the naturally flavored Pistachio filling of a lengthy Éclair while both the Caramel Tart and self-proclaimed "Best Brownie in Calgary" were well constructed with Nuts helping to temper their sweetness. read more

Sad that I missed out on this gem when I lived down the road. Or maybe I am not, because convincing myself to not stop in would have been an exercise in futility. Went in early morning to grab breakfast and kill time before a meeting. They have wifi which is great as it meant I could squeeze in 30min of work while I enjoyed. I was sitting by the left wall and didn't see any plug-ins but not sure if they may be somewhere else. Just an FYI to have full battery on your laptop just in case. I tried their spinach + tomato omelette croissant. It was all kinds of delicious surprises. First they actually make the omelette on the crepe machine, before folding in the toppings. It made for a light egg but without the fluffiness. Just the right amount of filling too. Was surprised at first that the croissant wasn't warmed up, but the omelette warmed the inside just enough, and none of the croissant edges got hard and crunchy as they cooled. Also tried the nutella latte. I am pretty sure it is just nutella in hot milk, but it was unreal good! Just sweet enough but not overpowering. The worst part was I ordered a regular and desperately wanted more when my cup was finished. As I said nice surprises all around. Didn't get a chance to try any of the pastry but that was on purpose. Stopped here to pickup dessert for our Thanksgiving feast. Bought a profiteroles tower $25. and 2 creme brûlée to go $7/each. Cream puffs were light and tasty filled with cream and covered in dark callebaut chocolate on top of a vanilla custard tart. These were a big hit and the presentation is beautiful. Creme brûlée was one of the best I've ever had!!! They were not eggy tasting and more milky although some would say too runny. A delicious vanilla flavour and velvety smooth- omg!!! They had been refrigerated for a few hours and of course the top was not crisp as if it were torched a few moments before serving but that's likely my fault and not theirs. I did transport this about 45 min to my home then it spent 4 hours in another fridge before serving. Overall, the product quality is high here and comes with a higher than average price tag. Well thank the Lord someone decided to open up La Boulangerie in this French-deprived otherwise fair city of Calgary. You see, I lived in Montreal for 5 years. I was a bit spoilt for choice when it came to crepes, croissants, any French baked good really. So yes, I know what a good dessert shop/bakery is supposed to be like (don't argue with me), and La Boulangerie is as good as it gets in this city. One morning when I woke up and realized it was my birthday weekend (read: I could do what I wanted), I decided I wanted crepes. To that, my husband brought up a very good point: we now lived in Calgary and were pretty much devoid of any such indulgences. I kicked and whined and headed to Google, Yelp, Urbanspoon and every other search engine imaginable to find a place in Calgary that sold crepes. La Boulangerie popped up after a few miserable attempts, and off we went, morning breath and all. I barged in through the doors of this adorable little Parisian bakery in Mission and there it was in front of me, a a delightful little CREPE MENU. After my squeals of joy had subsided, I ordered a delightful coconut crepe, and my husband went with a delightful chocolate crepe. They were both delicious, as was the almond croissant we shared. Everything in there looked positively mouthwatering. Cases upon cases full of pastries, tarts, croissants, baguette sandwiches, CREPES! So delightful. I pretended to be in France/Montreal for a little bit longer and indulged in a little espresso and people-watching. La Boulangerie is a welcome addition to the exploding food culture of Calgary. Basically a cafe and bakery in one, it was really about time that there was another location in the European tradition besides just Manuel Latruwe (though admittedly I still love going there). Designed to basically look and feel like a cafe in the middle of Paris complete with a patio full of those neat little chairs and tables. On the inside, display cases are filled with the fresh pastries, both sweet and savory, do their absolute best to appeal to the eyes, nose and palate. In another place, a large hanging board lists the various coffees offered to match with the pastries, and another sign advertises the great selection of freshly made sandwiches designed to absolutely charm the diner into a yummy haze of flavour and taste. I'm a fan of their ham and cheese croissant off-hand, and try to pick up one from time to time. A fellow foodie, KS, keeps raving to me about the sandwiches which I really should try one of these days. And I like to pick up a pain au chocolat once in a while, as I find it's the perfect thing to break the resolve of a fellow co-worker during her annual diet (I admit it, I'm evil at times). Basically, it's a good place to go for a nice light breakfast, coffee break and lunch. The only thing I find is that it's a little disorganized when it comes to ordering. There doesn't really seem to be a rhyme or reason on how it operates when you want to place your order. Special note: They have dedicated 20-min parking spots in the lot next to the building. The order counter can get crowded at times and the line does go into the seating area which can make it awkward but the wait is worth it. Walked around to find great pastries. The walk down 4st SW was really nice. It's early but the feel of the city here is lively, new, clean. I was excited to find this place! Upon entering the doors the scent of freshly baked pastries was amazing! It's light and warm feeling inside. With so many items to choose from the deciding was difficult. Since its breakfast I decided to get the croissant with vanilla custard. Typically I'd choose hot chocolate but I'm SO glad I ventured out and tried the Nutella Latte. It was deeeelicioos!!! Liquid, creamy Nutella!! Yum! It paired perfectly with my croissant. The atmosphere and flavors would definitely get me to return! Went back and tried the Koch Ahman which was sooo good!! I love this cute French bakery cafe. It's the perfect place to enjoy a croissant and latte. A plus is that you can people watch on the patio in the summer. They have many varieties of croissants and they are perfect - light, airy, buttery, crunchy on the outside with soft layers on the inside. The coffee/espresso is Illy, which is always smooth and tasty. They have a super wide variety of croissants that are outta this world such as the usual suspects, plain, chocolate, almond and cheese; plus others more unique - green tea! Vanilla custard! Hazelnut! Blueberry! And more... Plus other baked goodies and tarts I wanted to try but dare not unless I wanted to weigh 200 lbs coming back! The SO and I also tried their selection of Alfajores, essentially shortbread-like cookies sandwiched together with dulce de leche in between. They have a few varieties including ones with coconut, white chocolate, regular chocolate and hazelnut. Our favourite was the coconut one. This place impressed us so much we came back the next morning for breakfast before heading back to Edmonton. It was a Saturday morning and busy at that. If you want a table be sure to get there early as they are limited inside. But while we were there there was a constant influx of patrons which was nice to see. Other offerings include baguette or croissant sandwiches, homemade soups, savoury baked puff pastry items, and of course beverages such as coffee and delicious fresh orange juice. I like this bakery because I can get some unique breads for my French cuisine for example brioche loaf. Their coffee is quite good and it is a very busy coffee/bakery outlet. The inside only has a small number of tables but they have an outdoor patio that can handle overflow in summer. The staff are very nice and take the time to explain their products. Everything tastes very good here and always fresh. Even though the store is small they make up for it in friendly staff, great coffee and delicious foods. read more

One of my favorite place for French bakery cravings along with their espresso using Illy coffee. I ate my baked goods too fast before I realized that I forgot to take pictures. I recommend the macaroons, lemon & chocolate tarts. I have tried their salmon sandwich and savory crepe (hard boiled egg and ham) and a French onion soup and all of them were delicious. The croissant was firm on the outside and soft on the inside, the crepe was generous in portion sizes and the French onion soup was great and doesn't taste like instant mix packets. I would come back for more crepe and pastry fix. Perhaps my only concern for this place as some people will notice is the price for some menu items are on the more pricey side. read more

One of my favourite cafés in Calgary, without a doubt, for many reasons- the food, the coffee, the European-esque atmosphere, the friendly staff. It's right off my bus route, so I'll often pop in before or after work, for either just a coffee or a full blown meal. Everything I've ever had here is excellent, but I'm especially partial to their kouign amann (a Bretonese pastry, I believe?), beef stew, ham and cheese puff pastries, americanos, freshly-squeezed OJ, and Nutella lattes. Okay, yes, I like everything haha. Service is always impeccable and accommodating. The lovely owner is here almost every time I am, cheerfully greeting customers who all seem to be friends, and working hard to ensure her clients have an amazing experience. My two cents? Come here.
