The service is friendly and they have some good discounts on used vinyls, but I've gone in a few times over the years and have always walked out empty-handed. I listen to a wide variety of genres and yet it seems impossible for me to find any records I'm interested in, especially in genres that aren't soft rock/country/classical. If you do happen to find an artist you're looking for, the spots are usually empty or only include the worst albums. I've had much better luck at Vertigo Music downtown which seems to have everything from niche experimental genres to hot new releases, and all at a better price point. read more

All I can say is "WOW!" This shop is huge. There is a front room with new and used rock and jazz LPs and CDs. Then I found the back room with a stage for music events, along with country, classic, and easy listening LPs and CDs, DVDs, and music books, then I found ANOTHER room with 45s then ANOTHER room full of $1 45s! I could have spent all day here but got out of there before I took out a second mortgage. The used vinyl is in great shape and prices right. This place is massive!! I went there to buy records, and this place is so big inside then it looks form the outside. They have a great selection of all sorts of music. Finally had the opportunity to visit the new location. What a change for the better. It's easier to shop. Still the great selections. The used equipment area was well stocked and prices were very reasonable. I keep an eye on the prices for cassette decks and they were spot on with their pricing. This place has a very large selection of vinyl, leaning more heavily toward used. Their selection is broken up into pop & rock, jazz, folk and a few other more obscure genres. They do have a decent "new arrivals" section which is filled with some used gems. Their pop & rock selection is quite large, so be prepared to spend a couple of hours digging. I do like how the letters are organized though, with all the miscellaneous records in a separate section next to the "named" artists. I will mention, their prices are a bit all over the place. A lot of the records were overpriced, but I found a lot of reasonably priced ones too, and the employees are willing to entertain counteroffers. read more

This is a great store with friendly honest and helpful staff. My family and I like going there to browse the selection and I like to see what sound equipment they may have for sale. I've never encountered a service issue there and I've been a customer for more than a decade. Very knowledgable staff. I've never had to sell them (or anyone) any of my records before, but I am a fat bald white guy myself. Where to start, where to start?? I've been doing business with Steve and the Corner Record store for 15 years. His selection is continually rotating. If it's New Releases or 45's. Steve and his employees customer service is top notch. They have always bent over backwards to make sure I am happy with purchases or repairs. I brought in two record players. One was unfixable. Well....it was fixable but the parts prices would have outweighed the actual cost of the record player. Just not worth it to me. The other one was fixable and the repair tech did a great job. I thought about reviewing this place for a long time. I almost didn't do it just because I was worried about other people finding out my secret and making my "little known" spot into a place where I had to fight crowds just to get in the door. But, alas, I no longer live in Grand Rapids (at least for now...) and I'm really not all that paranoid anymore. I realize I be sending someone to snag up a record I really want before I get there... but I'll take my chances. Simply because this place deserves the business. The Corner Record Shop doesn't quite have the feel of an old-school music store, but it has all the quality you would expect from one. I've seen this place go from one side of the building they inhabit, to expand to take over the other side (which used to be a porn shop), to expanding even further to the backroom. Practically any type of music you're looking for can be found here - and on practically any format (except reel to reel but I might be the only person looking for that anyway)... vinyl, CD, and tapes make up most of the offerings but Steve could probably point you in the right direction to track down whatever it is you're looking for. As the name would suggest though, records really make up the majority of this place and that's quite alright with me. The organization here can be a little wonky and there's TONS of unsorted stuff underneath the main racks that you're free to browse through as well. Digging through all the stuff and finding that one gem is what it's all about. All the albums are out in the main part of the store and if you peek back by the register there's a door off to the side - 12" singles and 45s are back here waiting for you to dig through them... that copy of Madonna - Vogue with the club ultimix will soon be yours. It might look like you're not supposed to be back here but it's cool. Trust me. No, seriously. On the other side of the counter there's yet another door that leads to their equipment room. If you're in the market for a jukebox, a new-used turntable, some speakers, or a reel to reel player, then you're in luck. From what I gather all this stuff has been looked over by the guys there and it's good to go. They accept everything back too if you encounter any problems so just go for it. Used CD's, DVD's, VHS tapes, and other stuff is all here too. That deserves a brief mention. The guys that work here, especially Steve, are basically the shit. Don't let their age fool you, they might look a little bit older but they know their music and are always playing some good (or at least interesting) tracks in the store. I recall one time I was having a problem with the ground on my turntable and Steve took it in the back, extended it for me and fixed it up perfectly in under 5 minutes. When I asked him what I owed him for the procedure he told me not to worry about it. When's the last time a place did something like that for you? A great selection of new and used vinyl, great staff, a welcoming atmosphere, and really great prices keep me returning to this place and always considering a move back to Grand Rapids. No joke. Everyone that works here is friendly. They don't hang over you while you're browsing, so it's very relaxing. They have a fair price on everything, though I wish I could get that Ween album for a little less than $100! I wouldn't bother selling, they give you the bare minimum, but they're sellers, not collectors so I can't hold that against them. They know what sells, and what's valuable. They're very knowledgeable and love to talk music with us while we're browsing. It's the only place I've found that has a selection like this, I try to go here first before looking online. read more

When I travel, I always search out the local record shop. The Corner Record Shop is well above average. The selection is pretty good, and price is competitive. The dollar bin room was really entertaining to me. I could spend a whole day in there. I bought a couple of things from their dollar bin that I absolutely love. I don't know how they stay in business - I bought a store t-shirt (cool enough logo), a regularly priced piece of used vinyl and some stuff from the dollar bin - and I still barely spent $20. I'm only going with four as opposed to five stars only because of their size. They are delightful, but not huge. read more

Consider Yourself Warned. I dropped of my pristine vintage Sansui 8080 receiver for service. When I came to pick it up, the owner himself realized he GAVE IT TO THE WRONG PERSON! I was gracious. They told me not to worry and that they would get it back. A week later I returned to get my receiver. I was disappointed to see the top front edge had been damaged. Additionally the vinyl on the side had a 3" tear AND the rear corner wood was split and damaged. When I told the owner (Little guy with glasses) he immediately became very agitated and accused me of lying. He claimed no on at his store abused equipment. I told him that someone did and it was possibly the person he gave my receiver to and that he was responsible. The argument became very loud and heated and he refused to reduce or compensate me for the damages. He kept telling me to "go home and get a picture to prove the receiver wasn't damaged before I brought it in" I asked him if he had a computer. He said yes. I told him I had tons of great pictures of the receiver in my PhotoBucket account as I had had it listed on Craigslist. Realizing he was caught with the entire store witnessing the argument, he kicked me out and banned me from the store. He wasn't going to even let me pay the full bill and take my receiver. He said I would have to sue him. Finally he agreed to let me jut pay it and get out of there. This man is unstable. Do NOT let him anywhere near your equipment. read more

This place is awesome and the staff is the best. Just some laid back, super chill guys who are extremely knowledgeable about turntables and everything vinyl. They're super helpful and friendly and are always concerned with establishing relationships with their customers to ensure that they'll be back again soon. Love going into this place. Great selection, and usually a good value. Only minor complaint is that they don't carry too much new release/indie records, so Vertigo may be your best bet if you're looking for newer titles. Huge selection of older vinyl. Stuff is kind of all over the place and not easy to find. Most of the vinyl is pretty over priced. A few good deals. For new music they have maybe 100 albums if that. Coolest thing is they sell turntables and audio equipment. They do buy and sell used stuff also. I noticed on record I bought was listed at 18.99 and they charged me 19.99, not a huge deal but kind of annoying after you see it when you are already home. A lot of the hip bands (the beatles, etc) seem to be 7 to 10 dollars higher then normal prices. I am guessing to get new vinyl listeners to overpay. read more
