Apparently it's not that unusual for a fish and chip shop to open for lunch, shut in the early afternoon and then reopen for tea time, but for one in such a good location (right at the top of Horsforth's Town Street) you'd expect one continuous period of business. If you can catch this place when it is open, the fish and chips are pretty nice, and they do a mean battered-sausage. The chips are usually over-fried and crunchy, the fish non-descript. Redeeming feature the mushy peas are quite nice. I have been told that the sausage is delicious (as also indicated by the previous reviewer), but it's not for me. They also sell Southern Fried Chicken, but as I have NEVER seen anyone buy it, presumably those who have either won't or can't buy again, I would not recommend it. This place used to be full of school kids on a weekday lunchtime so I imagine that's were they get a lot of trade. Again too much choice to put Long Row in the top five this side of Leeds. Give it a miss if you can.

I've lost count of the number of times I've been down here at a lunch-time, and I've never been disappointed by it - cripsy batter and chips that are not too greasy, all piled under more scraps than you can shake a stick at make Midgley's a safe choice. The big sign outside advertising fish and chips for £2.99 made me wonder what kind of horror we were about to find but we went in and the staff were very friendly and service was pretty speedy. The fish was nicely battered and the chips were chunky and not half as greasy as I was expecting. I didn't have to crack out the kitchen roll or anything! The portion was slightly smaller than I was used to getting which was perfect as we were left feeling very full, but not like we might never move again. In summary: Cheap as chips (boom boom) and some of the best fish and chips I've ever had.
