My wife and I eat out two or three times a week - the Cromwell is only a few minutes away from our house and its a very nice pub in a pretty local village.
We've persisted with the Cromwell in the hope that it would get better but they are frankly taking the mickey.
I had the 'medley' of turkey, beef and pork for sunday lunch a while back and it was appalling - it looked like the chef was rationing the meat just in case they ran out, also alot of fat and not much meat.
On saturday night us and another couple ate their. I paid £5 for a starter which consisted of two mushrooms, a bit of overdone bacon and some sort of leaf garnish. The waiter thought that one of our duck starters was ham!
Of the three venison main courses we had none were cooked as requested and they sat on top of three pieces of parsnip swimming in a gravy. all that for £15.
The portion sizes at the Cromwell are too small, the menu is overpriced and there are too many choices. The bar staff do their best to keep up but it takes forever to get a drink at the bar when there are more than two or three people waiting to get served.
Even in the hungry horse you get served with a knife and fork - in the Cromwell if you eat in the lounge you are politely directed to fetch your own knife and fork out of a communal bucket - classy eh!
Cromwell cottage - OK for a drink but not much else. read more
