It was originally opened in 1903 and restored and reopened in 2018. It's the last surviving Mackintosh tea room and worth coming to for amazing architecture and history. If you are seated near the windows people-watching is SO good and doing it from the high-backed Mackintosh chairs gives the whole experience an very surreal quality. The third floor was not occupied when we went and I liked the blue colors, this is also the floor where the bathrooms are. My wife wanted to try a traditional British afternoon tea experience, for some reason we have never tried it before and have been to the UK, Scotland, and Ireland before. The appealing this is its the stereotype of the experience with fancy pots and teacups for the tea, and stacks of small plates on a carrying tray like a movie. They offer a "classic" afternoon tea which has a mixture of sandwiches with smoked salmon, egg salad, cucumber, and ham. Sweets are fruit scones or cake with homemade short bread rounds. My wife got this one. They also offer a "savory" afternoon tea which I got. The sandwiches are the same but it comes with haggis on oatcakes, sausage pastry roll, chicken, and a cheese and tomato tart. I got this and we both loved these. For teas we highly, highly recommend the House blended tea "Mackintosh". It's like a "super" version of black tea and I never had one like it. It's so good we keep trying to replicate an English Afternoon tea like this at home!

For the very reasonable £14.95, the afternoon tea is made up of your choice of English/Scottish loose tea, two rounds of sandwiches (e.g. cheese and tomato, tuna and sweetcorn, ham and tomato, egg mayonnaise), scones with cream and jam, and a selection of cakes. The staff are absolutely lovely - run by a family, it's lovely and unique to be seated by a granny, then have her grandson bring over your order, then pay the auntie! The staff have always been so lovely to speak to as well - chatty, friendly and cheerful, giving the Glasgow Tea Rooms a more 'friendly local' vibe than other similar tea rooms and restaurants in the Merchant City area. The afternoon tea is a generous size - every time I've visited I've had to take away at least a few of the cakes in a box because me and my friends simply couldn't manage them at the time! It's not a problem at all to take away some of the food if you've not managed to eat it all, with the staff usually suggesting it before you even have to ask. Everything is home made and fresh, which means you can ask for a slight change in sandwich toppings if you fancy (e.g. I always have cheese sandwiches with no tomato) and - if you're lucky enough to time it right like I was last time - you can tuck in to scones warm from the oven. The Glasgow Tea Rooms does get busy, so, especially if you're popping in over the weekend, I recommend booking a table. The last time I visited every table was full so the staff were really busy which meant there was a bit of a delay between finishing our pot of tea and having a fresh one brought to the table - if you're happy with a short wait then pop in any time, otherwise I'd avoid Saturday and Sunday lunch times! I bought a box of the chocolates for Maw once and she said they were fantastic, although they're the kind of ones you can only eat 2 or 3 of at a time. For it being such a small, quality business, prices actually aren't that bad.

Anyhow, I recall her excitement at finding this place a while back but never having been in. I took it upon myself to do all the work and pick her up some chocolates for a mini-celebration. They might have been better than the ones I have just worked through from Marks and Spencers I got from Christmas, and were certainly better than Thorntons. Everything in Thorntons sort of tastes the same, in the same way everything in McDonalds also tastes the same. The staff were friendly and chatty and more or less done the work on my behalf to be fair with regards to buying the chocolates, all I done was actually pay for them. Didn't pay as much as I was prepared to either so I treated myself to a cup of coffee, which was also above average. I am a romantic man. Who knows how to treat himself as well.
