Houghton Lake is where my partner's family does their 4th of July reunion. Their lake house is a five minute walk to this ice cream shop and it is already a bit of nostalgia for me. Service is not always spot on, so go early in the day so you don't worry about them closing down a bit earlier than the hours say. It's a small interaction, so it doesn't ruin the experience of this delectable treat. The classic twist custard on a cake cone is everything you need it to be on a hot summer day. Please do yourself a favor and drive less than five more minutes up to RJ's and skip this place. The owner (I assume it's the owner or manager) is super unfriendly and has the strangest concept for customer service. They close at 9pm, but they really mean that they plan to serve the last bowl of custard at 9pm - so don't bother pulling in at 8:37pm because he will just yell at you that they are closing and aren't serving any more. It looks like a dump anyway. Fortunately, we were rewarded 5 minutes later with the most delightful cone at RJ's, and it was served up by two super friendly high school kids who were super fun to talk to. I'm visiting my hometown of Houghton Lake, MI again. There is lots to do and lots of people to see. One place that is always on my I GOTTA GO list is The Custard Cup so I can get real ice cream in a real waffle cone. This trip I hot a Single (because I was driving) Butter Pecan cone. As always the ice cream was real ice cream and not Tilt a Swirl ice cream similar to what you'd get at a man arched fast good restaurant. Luxurious frozen custard which is good to satiate the need for frozen treats on a hot day. It's good stuff but not something I'd submit into a must-try category. Pricing is very affordable as is most eatables in a small town. As other reviewers have mentioned, although their name is "Custard Cup" the number of varieties available is nil. (The other day, it was vanilla / chocolate / twist and orange) Strangely, frozen custard is only available in their regular serving sizes and not in anything larger like take-home pints or quarts. (Many the frozen custard purveyors I've visited will often offer take home quantities.) The business is a stand only. A few round tables sit outside which can serve small groups. The business operates as cash only and has a drive-thru available. There aren't any restrooms available. But say, you have a kid in tow that has bathed in custard. Ask if you can utilize the hose for a quick wash. read more

There was a line at 8:55 pm, the sign says they are open from 2-9. We were in line and some other people came in behind us. A man, I'm assuming the owner, yelled out the window while handing a child a cone: "GET OUT OF HERE!" Stunned, my boyfriend and I looked around to see who he was talking to and the others looked around as well. He continued to shout "GET OUT OF HERE YOU'RE NOT GETTING ANYTHING!" I told him to relax and he continued to become very agitated. We were all confused as to a) who he was talking to and b) what had caused him to react SO violently. The number one thing you need to know right now: there is only two flavors of custard. The rest is bottom shelf, regular ice cream. Im not sure why they are called "Custard Cup" but their ice cream list triples their custard list. Their custard is good. Not great, not bad. To give you some background I frequently make custard ice cream and have visited quite a few custard shops. So this was just "good". It was smooth, thick, well blended and had low tangy notes that appear in the after taste. You also get a fair amount of custard for a fair price. I can't say I would suggest this place as there are other custard spots in the area but I would never miss an opportunity to eat custard ice cream! read more

If you know anything about homemade custard, you know that the Custard Cup tastes like it was made in the kitchen, and then thrown into an ice cream machine. For the amount you have to pay for a single cone, I'd be willing to pay twice the amount for the serving size that they give you. If you're looking the custard as its melting away under the hot sun, it's that combination between halfway melted and halfway Frozen that makes the Custard Cup easily the world's best frozen custard shop. Honestly very unsafe atmosphere- when we pulled up 10 minutes before closing, the older gentleman got in our face and pointed at us saying we were no longer welcome because we always came 20 minutes before closing (apparently that's too late.) Be careful when bringing children- he has very unpredictable anger and I wouldn't subject children to that behavior. read more
