I have been coming here for 25 years before the new owner to over and updated everything. I'm so happy she hasn't really changed the menu other than adding to it The custard ice cream is always creamy and flavorful no matter what flavors of the week she has. There is usually a line most times out the door but the staff is usually very fast and efficient. Today I just had the chocolate/vanilla twist dipped in cherry. I live in Maryland and was excited to try custard hut for the first time during my visit b/c I've seen it many times on an Instagram acct I follow for foodies. After arriving, me and my sister joined the social distancing line outside. There were two women in front of us who were together. They both went in and came out of the shop together. Me and my sister went in next, placed our order, and immediately after we were asked if one of us would step out so they could take the next guest which also happened to be another pair. I told the woman that asked that we hadn't even gotten our order and to top things off the previous guests weren't asked to do the same. Was she assuming that one person was going to carry both orders? Why make that assumption? I don't know why one of us was asked to leave but I do know that my sister and I were the only Black people there so it's hard for me not to feel like I wasn't given the courtesy others were b/c I'm Black. Finally had a chance to try The Custard Hut after constantly hearing about how the hot waffle sandwich is to die for. I drove all the way from Oak Park to Dearborn to get my hands on one. The building is small, probably only holds 15 people comfortably and the parking lot is even smaller. I highly recommend parking on the street. We arrived on a Thursday around 8:30pm and it was pretty crowded to the point the people behind us had to wait outside. We all ordered a hot waffle sandwich. They have different flavors of waffles (I went with cinnamon), different flavors of custard (twist is always a favorite) and then toppings. $5 for a waffle ice cream sandwich isn't bad. I took one bite and fell in love. I've never had anything like it before. Their menu is pretty big and the service was great and friendly...however there is a chance that I may have just gone on a good day compared to other recent reviews that experienced poor service. Like the other reviewer I spent A LOT of time here in my youth. Rolling up on my bike in the summertime for a cone then sitting on the wall enjoying the sweet deliciousness before it melted all over my hand. My picture is even somewhere on the wall in one of the many Polaroids of t-ball teams they've sponsored throughout the years. Admittedly I rarely ate food here because what I came for, and still go there for, is the custard. A rich and sweet soft serve vanilla custard in a cone covered with their AMAZING sprinkles (seriously, I don't know where they get them but they are the best sprinkles in the biz). It's been my regular order for as long as I can remember. I used to rock the chocolate/vanilla twist but the chocolate is so good and chocolaty that it would overpower my beloved vanilla so I just go with the plain cone. But if you're a chocolate ice cream/custard lover it's totally for you. The space is small and hasn't changed in 20+ years. A brick building, yellow-orange counters with a few stools by the nacho chip warmer, and some coolers with hand dipped ice cream flavors (if you want to go with something other than the soft serve custard). The posters and the handwritten signs are still all the same ones they had when I was a kid. The smell is even exactly the same--I walk in and I feel like I'm 8 again! The menu is posted up near the ceiling on plastic signs with those black plastic moveable letters (you know the kind). The only thing that's changed are some of the prices but even those are still so low! The last time I was home I was jonesing for a cone but didn't have cash on me (they're cash only so bring your dollars). Luckily I was able to scape together the last of my change in my wallet to cover my usual small vanilla cone with sprinkles and a tip for the high school aged gal behind the counter! The menu offers up your standard fast food type fare--burgers, pizza, fries, etc.--which you can enjoy on the picnic tables out in the parking lot. When finished you'll obviously run back inside for a dessert! A wide variety of ice cream flavors, custard, sundaes, shakes, popsicles, and my other favorite--the slushi (blue raspberry for me, please!) are yours for the choosing. They're open only in the summers which always bummed me out as a kid but as I got older and more patient I've come to appreciate their summer only status. My latest dessert obsession. I do have a thing for frozen custard. So much richer and more interesting than typical soft serves. That being said this goes a step above flavor wise. The chocolate custard in here is so delicious. It has almost a malty underlying flavor and is quite addictive. I like it on its own or in a twist with the nice vanilla. The waffle cones in here are store bought but fresh and crisp. I like cones or cups and don't bother with toppings, its that tasty and satisfying. If you are into more complicated items they have them here, endless toppings and variations. I see a lot of shakes and sundaes being made. They also feature frozen bananas dipped in chocolate, with or without nuts. That I may try. The store is clearly older and run down but I don't care a bit. Treats are average. The custard is okay (never had bad ice cream/custard before) but nothing here is ground breaking. The new owner took over and left everything the same but added ego waffles. They use an ego waffle as part of the sandwich. Yes people it's a frozen ego waffle. You can get the chocolate chip one or the regular ego waffle. I wish they would make their own waffles or something along those lines. A big issue is the customer service. The owner lady is ridiculously rude and always looks like she smelled something poopy. Their credit card machine was down one evening so she wouldn't let me come back later to pay. I had a 4 year old with me, they told me he picked his ice cream so I sucked it up. I had to come try the waffle sandwich after seeing so many pictures of them! It was pretty good and surprisingly you can eat them without much of a mess. I guess I assumed the custard would get pushed out of the waffle when you take a bite. One complaint is that although I'm not 100% sure, the waffles look and feel like they are the frozen kind where you cook them by putting them in a toaster like a Eggo waffle. I wish they would make them fresh and from scratch especially at almost $5 a sandwich. I also wish they had more flavors of custard. They only have vanilla, chocolate, and a special "flavor of the week." Finally, they were *extremely* nice and patient. Tonight my cousin and I visited custard hut and was serviced by the female owner. She was immediately irritated as if she hated servicing customers or even working. She was not pleasant to say the least. My cousin requested for extra Nutella on her waffle as she always requests this each time we go with no issues. Tonight she rudely said she could not do that, pointed at the menu rudely and said, look you see it right there ONLY THREE ITEMS ALLOWED!!!.
