When you order a hotdog here, only one topping is included. Want mustard on your chili dog an extra $.40 cents, for mustard really? What a joke. If you get one loaded like most people do in West Virginia, you're gonna pay over five dollars for a freaking hotdog, if you want all beef make that six dollars. Absolutely ridiculous. Dog friendly seating!! Right off the highway so great for roadtrips. They have a window or you can go in. Nice bathrooms the hot dogs are just ok. Not anything special. Just a delivery device for the very good chili. The corn dogs were good and the kids enjoyed them. We all got different flavors of custard. Not thick as you might expect but more like regular soft serve. We got bubblegum, watermelon, amaretto,and fudge brownie. All were light and good. Stopped at the window. Girl saw me and instead of taking my order, yelled for co-worker to shut off the open sign. I was at the window before closing. Then she opened the window and said, "Sorry, we are closed." Unbelievable!!! If you are open until 10, you stay open until 10, not start closing at 9:50 and ignore customer. read more

The only reason this is getting one star is because of the ONE cashier. Although there were multiple other girls "working", or shall I say, on shift, the cashier was doing EVERYTHING! This poor girl was working her butt of doing everything. As we walked in the other girls were in the back cussing and completely enthralled in their own conversation. There were multiple families with young children and two elderly couples that were visually offended by the language being used by the girls. The cashier was busting her butt taking orders and making orders not saying much. It's a shame that with such a small place there was so much negativity in the air from the other girls. I was in the area and love trying local restaurants so stopped in to The Custard Stand. The young ladies working were friendly and took my order almost immediately. I enjoyed the chili dog with onions, onion rings, and carmel sundae. The food arrived extremely quickly, hot and aromatic. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and it was quite tasty. The food is pretty good. You know what you are getting--nice, WV-style, affordable, grub on-the-go. I know the owners of the chain and they are kind, WV-born folks. Last time we were there, I got two hot dogs. They were good as always. My son got chicken tenders, which he enjoyed. For dessert, he opted for a chocolate milkshake and I got a Reese cup artic swirl. Both were good. My main issue is really bad customer service. It was a Tuesday, not a weekend. While I waited on the hot dogs and chicken tenders, one man yelled that he "should have just went to KFC" and stormed out the door. I could tell that he had been waiting for a while. I chose to dine in, so I could spend some extra time relaxing with my son on my birthday before we headed home. It took a very long time for us to get our food, but I assumed that they got a rush at the window. It wasn't until I ordered dessert that I realized that the staff wasn't up to par. I went to order at the cash register. The girl took an order at the window instead. Then, she took another order at the window. Then, she took another order at the window. Then, she took another order at the window. She talked to her co-worker and glanced in my direction. As people drove up and walked to the window, she continued to take their orders instead of mine. She took another order. And another. And another. At this point, I started getting vocal. Our table was next to the register. I asked my son if he was sure that he wanted dessert. As another car pulled up and she began taking their order, I asked my son if he would prefer to get a milkshake at McDonald's. I can understand why the "KFC guy" was so upset. When I was younger, I worked fast food and windows. I know how things "work" and proper procedures. Also, there were more than one employee working. It was totally wrong to take orders from 6, 7 or 8 other people while I was waiting and she (as well as the other employees) knew I was waiting. One might have been ahead of me, not the rest. It wasn't fair and it was very aggravating and frustrating. These folks need to be retrained in customer service or the Sutton locations is going to lose customers fast. read more

Hot dogs are delicious. Get West Virginia-style with chili and slaw. My favorite. Frozen custard was very average. I got the almond and cinnamon flavors and they didn't have a lot of flavor. Service is a little slow here. I really would love to give them another star, and I am so close to doing so, because frozen custard is always a hit on a hot day, but I'm just not quite at 4 stars here. No stores around here in Marion, Indiana to buy from. I almost ordered a case from them online but decided to check reviews first and glad I did. We stopped in there a couple of weeks ago on the way back from a trip, rather than eat at one of the usual fast food chains, we decided to eat at the Custard stand, that I've always heard about located in Webster Springs, figured maybe they good now that they were branching out and this place would be fabulous ....anything but that, this place sucks, how do you screw up a hot dog, I mean you almost have to try .....place was dirty on the outside, but hey, it's picnic tables, and we wanted to eat outside....went to the window to order, and the menu had two different types of dogs to choose from, an all beef dog( which was considerably higher), and a pork/mystery meat.....so I ordered several for myself, and my kids ordered several also, we all wanted the "all beef" dogs with different toppings, but got all mystery meat, soggy boiled, luke warm, dogs with all the same toppings ...but was so hungry, we ate them anyway, after waiting around half hour for some hotdogs and a couple soft drinks, ( and it wasn't crowded), it's not like I was expecting a gourmet hotdog or anything, but for like $3.29, you'd think it would be descent .......So, to get the rotten taste out of our mouths, I figured we'd order some custard, so I ordered what they said was banana, which tasted like caramel, and what my kids ordered also had a strange taste, like it was mixed from other flavors, but they liked it ok....like someone said in another review, nothing but a bunch young teenage girls working in there, and no one to watch them, this place was a huge disappointment, save your money and go to speedway or Sheetz to eat, those two places suck too, but not as bad as the Custard Stand in Flatwooods ... read more

So I was initially attracted to this place by the multitude of soft serve flavors. I saunter in and start looking at the flavor choices. I think there's like 24 or more, so it took a minute to pick something out, so the younger girl working there says "just let me know when you are ready to order" and walks over to start pouring cream into the ice cream machine. Less than a minute later, I'm read to order, and stand by her to get her attention, but she just keeps pouring that cream.
