I have loved Centerfold for YEARS! I love magazines...as a reader, a writer, an editor and publisher. Have done it all. Now I have PILES of back issues I'd like to sell. Good stuff. What a great little newsstand just pass Melrose on Fairfax Ave. The shop is small, but seem to carry a whole lot of magazines! We've been searching all day all over LA for a particular sports mag and finally found it here! It's evident they are up to date with their stock and get them fairly quickly. It's great seeing little newsstands nowadays since the Internet has taken over so many small businesses. read more

This is an excellent newsstand. Stop by to browse after grabbing a bite to eat at Oki Dog as you walk toward Melrose. They have your standard selection of magazines, and then some. Given its international focus, there are newspapers from around the world, as well as foreign magazines. I saw a good share of British titles but didn't dig much deeper than that. I snagged a copy of the UK heavy metal mag Terrorizer and will return to get a better sense of their stock. Given the "centerfold" in its name, there's also a hefty pornography selection. I didn't venture back there this visit but will do so some day to assess the range of titles. If you're not brave enough for the porn section, you can find tattoo mags and titles like Low Rider and Easyriders (always with the riding!) in the main stands. Good to know this is within walking distance. At first glance, appears to have a larger selection and real estate footprint than the newsstand closer to Beverly, but I'll have to confirm. LA Weekly has speculated that this will close soon. I'll do my part to help it stay open. You should, too. read more

Wow! How did I not know about this place? I drive by it a hundred times a month, yet I never noticed that it's there. I didn't want to go to the Barnes & Noble at the Grove to pick up my Mojo Magazine. I hate the parking there. So, I typed in "newsstand" in the Yelp search box and this was the second that came up, in between work & home, so I went there. Free and ample parking right next to it. That's already a winner for me! It's small, but enough to move around. There was no one else in the store, so I had all the room I needed, but I doubt it would ever get so busy that people couldn't move inside. Everything is well organized and easy to figure out with a quick glance what section you are in front of. I mainly went for music magazines, namely Mojo and Q. Not only they had the current Mojo that just came out a week ago, but they still had the previous issue. I got stuck at the music magazine section and picked up a Downbeat an Uncut and a Filter. Unfortunately, I did not find any classical music magazines (Classical Music or Gramophone), but I wasn't surprised. I was more surprised that they had Mojo and Q. Not even Barnes & Noble has Q, or maybe not when I am there to pick up my Mojo. Classical Music is not nearly as popular in a city this big as it is in any European capital, so not finding classical music mags on Fairfax wasn't an issue. The sex section is nicely separated. I wasn't interested in that sort of magazines, so I can't comment on the selection, but it seemed that they only had magazines for straight guys. Well, the gay boys know where to go for their mags, anyway. I doubt they would even go to this place. After finishing my music magazine browsing I looked at all the other sections. Amazing selection of fashion magazines, well pretty much of any subject. Like, I've never seen so many tattoo magazines at one place. Lot of British, German and French magazines, which, for a European, like myself was a welcoming sight. I am just about to subscribe to Mojo, but it can only start from March and so in the meantime, I'll just go here to pick up my Mojo and whenever Q has a worthwhile or an issue with a free CD. Oh, yes, I almost forgot. All the magazines with the free CDs (I bought 4) had the CD on them and still intact. I did find Mojo's before at B&N without the CD. I asked the attendant (young Latino kid) if he knew how long this place had been there, but he just shrugged his shoulders. It doesn't really matter, what matter is that I found it. :-) read more

great little newsstand that definitely has a better selection than The Kosher News. there are tons of hard to find magazines that i haven't seen anywhere else and they even have a decent selection of UK and international magazines as well. after chatting a bit with the owner, they also have a second location in Encino as well so if you're a die hard for a certain magazine, he can always call the second location to see if they have it as well. definitely will be coming back again and may even make this spot my monthly magazine run. read more

This is a company with a great selection! Why? This is the only store in the neighborhood that could find us copies of a certain international German magazine. They didn't have it in stock, but they were able to find a contact that could ship it in for us the following week. Our contact Renee was fantastic, courteous, and helpful. Let me repeat: this is the only shop in the neighborhood that could find a very hard-to-find magazine for us! I will definitely be using them again. read more

Well, after 20 years of shopping at the Centerfold newsstand, they have finally gotten rid of the adult magazines. They were my true one source for all these type of magazines. I believe they are the last to get rid of adult material in the LA area. Truly disappointed. They are still the best newsstand in the city. read more

This place has everything. It is right on Fairfax just north of Melrose. It has been around forever. New from all over the world!!!!! Service is as good as you can ask for and the selection of Mags reall leaves nothing left to be desired. Parking right in the lot which seems to be rare these days. Also, Right near Genghis Cohen (review to come.) Yummy. Cons, Sometimes a moody cashier. But over all great. read more

I just called this business to ask them what time they opened in the morning and if they carried the Financial Times and the guy said "uh i don't know maybe 6 oclock or something. I'm busy call back later" and hung up the phone on me! He was completely unprofessional. I will go out of my way to go to another newsstand even if this one is right by my house. Rude! read more

My favorite news stand in Los Angeles. First of all, they carry tons of Italian junky magazines (yay!), as well as British, French, Russian, and even Japanese glossies. Second, they don't charge exorbitant prices for foreign journals (I've checked: they're consistently 1-2 bucks less than anywhere in town). Third, and most importantly, whenever they can they leave in those funky cool gifts that European magazines contain as an incentive to pick them! pick them! from the over-filled news stands there, they do. So, I've ended up with a very cool wallet from "Eve" magazine, a scarf from Italian "Amica", and a really nice psychedelic carryall (cool and sturdy enough for my laptop) for free (well, minus the price of the magazine. The ultra-tattooed Indian guy at the counter is laconic but friendly, and he deals with the numerous neighborhood weirdos with great elan. And that's the other good thing. There's some sort of magical ambience there, so that all the non-dangerous weirdos seem to be there at the same time as I, in all their wacky garrulous glory, and they make me feel a little less lonely in this big strange city by their very determination to be themselves, and damn the torpedos. They all talk to Hindu Tattoo boy, and he answers in a noncommital but not offputting way, and they hang out a bit and then are on their way, as I spend a good amount of time wondering whether I want to sink $6 into the British version of InStyle (hey, it's ALL advertising, so they should pay us to read it) or $4 in Novella 2000, which is EXCELLENT if you want to find out scandals and misbehaviors of obscure Italian, French, and Spanish B-list actors. All in all, a great way to spend half an hour. read more
