I will not devote a lot of details and accolades to this review. Suffice it to say that from everything I have experienced from day 1 (Initial exam, cleaning, two crowns) has been perfect. State of the art equipment, excellent communication and a pleasant, professional atmosphere. As little stress as you could possibly imagine with dental work. Note: It's out of their control but be aware that parking at the Shadyside Place is an adventure. Recommend that you just go down all the way down to the outside area and use the ground level entrance and elevator. Everything is very tight in the garage itself. read more

I've been going to this dentist office for several years now and it's convenient for me because it's within walking distance. The front desk person always remembers me and I get to go back usually less than five minutes after being checked in. I like that they have a texting system for reminders about appointments. They texted us all today mentioned that their parking situation is valet only right now which didn't affect me because I walked but I can see how that can be annoying to others. Their waiting area is small with three chairs but they have things like a cell phone cleaner and bottled water while you're waiting. I had my six month check up today. I had X-rays done, my next appointment scheduled, cleaning, flossing, polishing, and fluoride done. A dentist also came in after the hygienist and checked my teeth. All of this was done in about 40 minutes. They usually give you a small goody bag with a toothbrush, a small thing of floss, and a travel toothpaste tube but they didn't this time for me which isn't a big deal. My fluoride treatment was $20 and I paid with my FSA card. read more

Best dental office in Pittsburgh! Michael does a great job managing and running the office and they dont push products or try to sell you too hard on anything. Their hygienists are always friendly and go gentle. My gum disease had been in remission for over 2 years because of this amazing practice. As one of the reviewers mentioned, this office looks good (for Pittsburgh). There are high end magazines, water, soothing music. For people who lived in CA it looks like a typical private dental practice. And that's where I made a mistake that due to dental anxiety it took 4 years to correct. First, a crown that was a wrong shade. I was told they will replace it anytime, but then excuses... doesn't come off, let me check on the crown, and eventually, it's been too long since it happened in 2022. The promise to replace the crown is in their notes. There was a crown that came off not once but twice. Finally, there was a tooth that had resorption and the dentist who saw me could not diagnose it or see the decay on the tooth next to it. If you're looking for cosmetic dentistry, this may be a good place for you, but if you want to keep your teeth instead of getting a mouthful of implants, stay away. If you question their standard of care, Dr. Bobbi will dismiss you as a patient. Note: As per demand letter I am editing this review to only include facts that are supported by texts, emails, and billing records (Delta only pays once for recementing the crown) and physical evidence (crown that is A1 vs A2 shade). I have NEVER asked for the below the gum line treatment. I asked for the hygienist to use handtools to go around edges of the crowns and 1 implant to thoroughly remove plaque so it does not harden and becomes tartar. I was told by the practice that such request constitutes below the gum treatment, eventhough previous hygienist at this practice used hand tools exclusively. There is one admin lady who was rude and condescending. Showed up for an appointment but the lady insisted that my insurance is inactive and I have to pay outta pocket. It was an easy fix but they didn't want to listen or at least call to get the details. When I called the insurance myself and resolved this misunderstanding, the office isn't answering/returning my calls. Looking at the reviews, they provide excellent care but the admin lady lost me. Note to the admin lady: when active duty insurance is inactive, ask for Appointment Control Number! read more

I strongly recommend everyone stay away from Michael Toro and the institution "The Dentists". I only went for a dental cleaning, but Michael Toro suggested an expensive crown procedure (which did not cost much after insurance but was nevertheless harmful to my health). He did not talk about alternative options and did not obtain informed consent. Unaware of how much damage it would incur to the tooth, I arrived at the next appointment. After the procedure, I was in unbearable pain for five weeks and had to take three Advil ibuprofen everyday. The situation was only improved after another doctor helped fix the negative side effects of the surgery, but I never recovered from Michael Toro's terrible procedure. I am very sad for the loss of my healthy tooth because of his malpractice and poor work. I am under forty years old and have had decent teeth with consistent dental checks. Had I not done the surgery, my tooth could have served me well for a long time. Be warned: Michael Toro is an inexperienced dentist who tends to recommend more dental work and lacks the wisdom of non-doing. Be skeptical of him because he will recommend extensive dental treatment! read more

I arrived at 2:30pm and waited 30mins. At 3pm I got my X-ray and then went back to the waiting area. She said it would be another 5-10mins. I left without rescheduling. I believe implementing these suggestions will contribute to a better patient experience and enhance the reputation of your dental practice. Like many people during the pandemic our longtime dentist retired and we began the search for a new dental office. We had some frustrating bumps and starts. It was when my 94 year old father had a dental emergency that I found my way to this AMAZING group of professionals. Whether you go to the Shadyside Office or the one at Mercy you will be treated with care, competence, and state-of-the-art dentistry. I can't say enough about how they cared for my Dad. Dr. Toro was so gentle and kind. His responsiveness to my Dad allowed me to feel brave enough to seek help for myself. I now have (at-long-last) relief for me having had a botched dental implant surgical procedure several years ago that left me with some cranial nerve damage. If you are looking for a skilled and compassionate periodontist--Dr. Powe is my forever-hero. Not only has he restored the botched implant--he found a way to do the surgery in the most gentle and noninvasive manner possible. And, the reactivity of those nerves has been completely relieved! This was so radically different than my rather traumatizing experience elsewhere that it's hard to even compare. From my first consult--a thorough treatment plan was drawn up; everything was explained to me in a gentle, non-pressured manner (no slick attempts to make money or charge for unnecessary procedures). The entire team works together collaboratively and cohesively. To top things off, there's even a complementary beverage center (hot and cold) so while you wait, you can relax and be refreshed. Two thumbs up just for all of that! The other thing that is wonderful about this dental group is they genuinely seem to enjoy working with each other. They are cheerful and professional, welcoming and supportive. And, if you're facing some expensive work (gulp!) they have a team who will work with you to come up with a payment plan. Their receptionists are amazing--competent and compassionate as well (far more than just "receptionists" they have both business and medical acumen). When I called (with no small amount of fear and trepidation) to schedule my surgery, the receptionist told me about her own dental woes before she had her issues dealt with by this dental team. She was so reassuring and informative at the same time. But here's the difference between being "just" a customer/patient and being treated with dignity and compassion. When I had my surgery, the receptionist came in and held my hand while the initial anesthesia was being injected. Talk about above and beyond! These folks are the real deal. This is a business that looks great on the outside, but behind the curtain there are issues. I have been in a chair, waiting to be seen, when a dentist began berating two members of her staff. When I brought it up to the office manager, he brushed it off saying that the dentist has known that employee for years so it's okay. It is NOT okay to talk to employees the way she did, and to do it in front of patients, is appalling. I had to come in 4 times to get a crown recemented over the course of 2 months because it kept falling out. Went to another dentist, and haven't had a problem since. They also had to try to whiten my teeth a second time, because they didn't do it correctly the first time. (PS - the 2nd time didn't work either.) Then there was my nightguard, which they had to do 3 times to get it correct. To top it all off, I receive a statement OVER 2 years after I switched dentists. Really?? They pride themselves on being customer focused, using cutting edge technology, and professional but they are anything but that. I wasted too much of my time having to return more than should have been necessary and spent money on procedures that were never successful. Please, don't make the same mistake that I did. read more

I have been to dental offices all over the country and the Dentist At Shadyside was by far the absolute best. For anyone to write a negative review about this office or the Dentist at Mercy is a clear indication that they have no discernment or taste for excellent quality, customer service, and/or professionalism. 1. Both offices are immaculately clean and use the most up-to-date technology. 2. Appointments are quickly and easily set with automated appointment reminders via text message or email shall you opt to do so. That's also a patient privilege, not an office requirement, so if you so happen to forget and not show up that shouldn't be their fault. However, they are very understanding in terms of rescheduling shall you call at least 24 hours in advance (which I've had to do once due to a last minute work obligation). 3. The offices are safely located with easily accessible parking structures very close to the building entrances. 4. The wait time upon check-in is always minimal (less than 5 minutes). 5. I've met three of the doctors; not because I needed to, but simply because they took time out of their busy schedules to introduce themselves and to double check that the quality of service rendered met their standards, which I very much appreciated. I really don't think any of them would have wanted me to leave dissatisfied in any way had I raised a concern before leaving the office. I received a crown on my front tooth and I'm happy with keeping it for the rest of my life. I highly recommend this office and can't see myself going anywhere else. read more

I HATE going to the dentist. I had a filling fall out and went here for the first time. The dentist explained that the filling was very big and my best bet would be a crown (I've had tons of fillings) never once has one fell out and I had a bad feeling about it. They suggested a crown, they were extremely patient with my anxiety and really took the time to make sure it was place properly. I have sensitive gums so they need extra work. They were very patient and gave me a beautiful new tooth. I HIGHLY recommend them. Dr. McPhail is great and straight to the point and makes you feel welcome. read more

I was way overdue for a cleaning and x-rays, so I checked through my insurance provider to see if I could get some care. I was directed to the Dentists at Shadyside Place. They got on the phone with me and scheduled an appointment for the following week! When I arrived, the facility was clean and felt safe to be in during the pandemic. When I got in to the office, I was greeted by Mike who handed me some basic paperwork (this is something you can do beforehand from what they email to you, but I'm a procrastinator sometimes). The dental hygienist cleaned my teeth and shmoozed. All their medical/dental tech is super modern and streamlined. It's incredible how these technologies get smaller and more efficient. I remember getting X-Rays as a kid and the machinery occupied entire rooms. Now they just have hand, x-ray guns that get the job done. The dentist laid out a course of action for me and following appointments/cleanings. This practice is professional, friendly, and pleasant. read more

Beware this place. Even if you have dental insurance they will tell you that you need things that are not covered without telling you that they are not covered and stick you with a $250 or more bill out of pocket. I have two university degrees and was duped. My last straw was a supposedly 'missed appointment' that they never called to remind me of and then went ahead and charged me $25. There were no reminders, no calls, no texts. Well I paid the $25 and they lost three customers. In response to your comment: The policy would be great if you handled your end of the policy properly and called or texted with reminders as agreed upon. Also, front desk staff was incredibly condescending on phone, so it seems that customer care, based on the evidence, is not your number one priority. And I paid all my bills the day of service; my problem was not paying, my problem was that it was not disclosed what was covered by insurance and what was not before performing procedures-even when I asked. Poor policies and poor customer care under the guise of quality service. read more
