You have to cancel an appointment A WEEK IN ADVANCE or they charge you! Who knows a week ahead of time if something is going to come up that would make you cancel an appointment? Plus they make you pay a deposit when you make an appointment and you have to prepay BEFORE the appointment starts. I've never heard of that. So, you can see where their priorities lies. I went in for an assessment and received a lengthy treatment plan. I made an appointment and it wasn't until a few days later I thought maybe they were planning to do all the work at once. I called to ask and yes, it was the case. That was too much work at once for me so I arranged to get just a few procedures at my next appointment. I wasn't given an amount I was expected to pay at the appointment. I checked the treatment plan and determined the copays would be covered by my flexcard for Medicare so was not prepared for a large expenditure. I went in for the appointment and the person at the desk was quite rude. I went to the desk and waited for her to acknowledge me but she didn't so I said my name, waited again and she didn't say anything. So I started to go and sit down. Then she said something about signing some papers so I turned around and went back to the desk. Apparently, I was supposed to pay $1200 that day before my appointment to prepay on crowns for root canals I was getting which I had not expected. As I hadn't prepared for that amount, I was taken aback and what was going through my head in that split second was what's the best way to pay this for me financially? Will they charge me a fee if I cancel? Will I lose my deposit? What cards do I have on me? Do I have time to do a transfer from savings to checking? Should I take money from my 401k? In my haste I thought I could use my flexcard and put the rest on the only credit card I had with me that would cover it, which I didn't really want to as it had a high balance already. I also have pretty rough physical issues that make just going somewhere a major chore so I didn't want to have to come back. So, I try 3 times to put my flexcard through their machine and each time it didn't work. Finally, the girl spoke up and said the last customer's card didn't work either. It wasn't till much later that I realized she probably wasn't pressing the right buttons. It was completely their fault as I checked later and the card was fine. So, I ended up putting the entire amount on my credit card. It was a lengthy procedure with alot of novacaine involved and wasn't till the next day that I felt better and thought I probably should have used another card I had that had no interest for 6 months so I called to see if they would switch my bill to the other card. Guess what? They refused. They said they paid a fee for me to use my card and they weren't going to pay a second fee. When I suggested they call the credit card company and try to get the fee waived they brushed me off. And, she said, "Well, you signed these papers" like I was disputing the amount and I thought that very rude. She also made some other rude comments. So, now, I'm stuck paying almost 30% interest every month for God knows how long until I pay off the entire balance on my card and my minimum payment has doubled. I had to go back to get my crowns but that's it. They mysteriously weren't able to take my flexcard plus sprung this large bill on me and wouldn't do anything to make it right. I'm done with them.

On the topic of x-rays, the first set didn't save on my first visit and I had to do them twice, and most recently they weren't able to be taken. I did get a pretty clear description of their teeth whitening service which I'm excited to try, and for the dog lovers out there, there's usually a friendly giant roaming the office!

I am pleased to have found Polished Dental Group. I actually really liked my other dentist so was apprehensive about going somewhere else, but I didn't want to wait because I thought I had a cavity. Well, unfortunately I was correct about the cavity. But fortunately I was really happy with the service I received. I'm a nervous dental patient with a small mouth. I'm sure I'm not a joy to work on. But both the hygienist and the dentist were patient and pleasant with me. When we first started the hygienist said I had to have full X-rays done but insurance only covers every three years. Immediately I figured I was going to have to pay a ton. But she explained if insurance didn't cover, it was only $10. This set me at ease immediately that they wouldn't nickel and dime me. My insurance covered anyway, but still. Additionally, all costs were upfront for everything. I opted for fluoride which my insurance doesn't cover. Was told cost before proceeding. When I checked out, I was also told how much my filling would be at next visit. It was all very reasonable. Like I said I'm a very nervous dental patient. During my cleaning and inspection, both the hygienist and dentist were vocal about what they were doing and that they would be gentle around my sensitive tooth (yes, the cavity!). Usually I feel like I am pulling away and wincing and generally freaking out. But their reassurances relaxed me, and I could calm down. And they were very gentle around the area so as not to cause me pain. I am so glad I found this office and so grateful for their excellent chair side manner. I can't say I'm looking forward to coming back (did I mention the cavity?), but at least I can be much less nervous about the upcoming filling.

I'm leaving this review to document my experience at Atlas Dental Specialists (Shadyside) for two…read morefront-tooth crowns. While the office is professional on the surface, my experience overall was extremely frustrating and costly. After my permanent crowns were placed, I developed persistent sensitivity in my right front tooth (cold and hot) that did not improve over time. I also felt a noticeable ledge/step on the back side of the crown near the gumline, which made me concerned about the fit/contour. Aesthetically, the crowns also looked longer and bulkier than expected with heavier incisal edges than what I was aiming for. When I tried to address these concerns, I was advised to pay for additional diagnostics (a wax diagnostic). After I paid for it, the office later terminated the patient-provider relationship instead of completing the planned corrections. What made the situation especially difficult was the refund process: the office confirmed in writing the refund amounts, but repeatedly stated the refund would only be processed if I signed a broad "release/indemnification" agreement exactly as written. The agreement was extremely one-sided. It went far beyond acknowledging a refund and included sweeping waivers and protections for the office, along with a "non-disparagement/online statements" section that, in my view, would discourage patients from speaking openly online about their experience. I was not comfortable signing something like that just to receive an agreed refund. Overall, I'm deeply disappointed by how concerns were handled. The communication and resolution process felt dismissive and, at times, misleading - more focused on protecting the office than responsibly addressing the problem. My takeaway is that the approach felt money-driven, and I left feeling I couldn't trust the process. I would encourage anyone considering treatment here to do thorough due diligence and not rely solely on online ratings.

It's a downtown office and downtown workers obviously use them and can't be away from work for hours on end because a dentist doesn't keep appointment times.) This place has zero respect for patients' time, but theirs is SO important that I received NUMEROUS texts in the days leading up to my appointment. "...you have an appointment reserved with Atlas Dental Specialists on Wed, Oct 1st at 10:20 AM." And ".."please respond with C to confirm your appointment with Atlas Dental Specialists for October 1st at 10:20 am. If your appt is missed, or cancelled / rescheduled with less than 48 hours' notice, a fee of $50/hour of appt time will apply." So obviously THEIR time is important. Just not their patients' time. Also, every appointment is "separate." Cleaning is one. Examination is another. It's all about money money money with this place. They did refund my $25 deposit though. Terrible place. And now I have to find a dentist.

They turned out to be not such a temporary fix as I kept them on until last October. Last Fall I decided to find a Prosthodontist to "fix" my teeth and make me two beautiful porcelain crowns. And that I did, I found Dr. Supowitz in Shadyside, right above J.Crew on Walnut. My entire process (temporary crowns, gum resection surgery, zoom whitening and then my permanent crowns) took about 6 months, partly because of my school schedule and partly because of the timing needed for certain procedures. Dr. Supowitz is so kind, comforting and knowledgable all topped off with a sense of humor. His staff are just as amazing and knowledgeable, making you feel "at home" as soon as you walk through the door. One thing that stands out to me most about Dr.Supowitz practice is he is a total perfectionist and I know he would never let me step outside his office without being 110% proud of his work - which, as a paying customer, makes me feel great!
