Fantastic bar if you like metal. They have shows, metal memorabilia all over the walls (and ceiling), and a decent selection of beers. I had an Icelandic Pale Ale that was very tasty - quite a rare beer. It's a great place to meet other metalheads as well (which come in all shapes, sizes, and genders). Could be a little cleaner. read more

The Dev has been a mainstay of Camden alternative culture for decades, providing a place to stop after shopping in Camden, to meet friends, or just to have a place where you know you'll be welcome. Like Camden, it's passed through different hands and gone through changes, from goth pub to Hobgoblin owned establishment to overall metal and alternative pub, and now with Camden Market's metamorphosis into a more polished, brightly lit and less alternative shopping venue, the Dev has become something of a sanctuary for those who feel more comfortable in the low light and wood panelled bar. The staff are kind, friendly and no-nonsense - you don't need to turn up in black leather and piercings, but woe betide anyone who comes in and disrespects their fellow patrons. The prices are quite reasonable, and, while it doesn't have the widest selection (I've never been fond of the fact that they don't have other ciders than Strongbow and Bulmers), I was pleasantly surprised with the wine on offer, and that they had a few good whiskies. The Dev, you either love it or you hate it- just like Marmite and/or Garlic&Shots. :D The Hobgoblin, formally The Devonshire Arms is known for the locals and regulars as The Dev. Aaaaaah. We go there because we like the music, the Newcastle is cold and the people are cool. Normally, on a Sat/Sun afternoon its chilled out, but being quite small ,it quickly fills up. There are Djs and sometimes live bands. And of course , you have the crazy local girl who beats everybody up, if you step on her toes, cuz otherwise she's quite friendly. What I find funny is seeing the tourists being very intrigued (and apprehensive at the same time) about the Dev people. Last week there was this couple taking pictures of punks! so weird. Anyways!! Go there if you wanna listen to some good metal, have a cold Newcastle and a bloody good time. read more

This was the first and only time I have ever felt uncomfortable at an alternative bar..... and drinking used to be a hobby for me. Human on the door was super aggressive. We had won tickets to see a band play and were told to pick them up at the door. Traveled to the Venu to be told by door human "we don't have a f***in list." Human wouldn't investigate further and would only speak to and make eye contact with my male friend. I don't know why.. maybe he is offended by ginger women ..maybe my pink skirt enraged the deepest parts of his black little soul, we shall never know. But what I do know is that I will be skipping this place in future. My advice to anyone who wins tickets to see a band at this destination is as follows.. For the love of all that is good if they tell you to speak to "Big Ian" try to approach from the front speaking in a calming tone. DO NOT startle this human by making any sudden moves or showing any signs of happiness, if you could try and look as dead behind the eyes as possible, I believe this may help. However, please be warned that this is just a theory. If it's not working retreat, for the love of Jiminy cricket, RETREAT to a safe distance... (Possibly Luton... but I predict Manchester maybe safer) Finally, try not to be ginger, female or dressed like a unicorn may have thrown up on you... The Dev! Wow, what can I say. This atmosphere/style/type of bar isn't for me. So my review is a little biased but generally Im open to different experiences and music. I was told that the music had been better on other nights. Good Things: They have a pinball machine! Spiderman to be exact. Bad Things: The DJ was horrible the night we came in. I think his name was Mike. He played horrible horrible songs that I think he thought were funny to play? Like he was thinking "Isn't it hilarious that I just put on chumbawumba in a grungy metal bar? haha!"....please, just stop. Random WTF Things: Some guy started physically fighting with a girl. Albeit she kind of started it, moshing and slapping him around for about 20 minutes, but dude just leave if she's bothering you. Even if it were two guys, starting fights while moshing to really bad music is just lameballs. read more

Located in the heart of Camden, this pub is the local hangout for Goths. You can imagine my surprise when I walked in, wearing very light colours not knowing what to expect, but to be honest I had an OK time once I got over my feeling of intimidation. The music ranged from rock to heavy metal and was probably a bit too loud, so beware if this is really not your thing. The drinks were affordable and the people were more than friendly. This bar is a great example of the huge diversity Camden has to offer, but frankly, it's not really my thing. Word of advice if you do decide to come here: wear black. read more

It's the only place in central London with Big Buck Hunter. For many of you, that's all you need to know. It's also a goth metal bar that has live music several nights of week, but that usually doesn't start until 7:00-8:00. So if you're looking for some quiet quality time shooting video deer, then get there earlier. I can't offer any feedback on the live goth metal performances. Also be forewarned that it's a crappy old 2006 Call of the Wild edition, but that's better than nothing. read more

The Hobgoblin/Devonshire Arms is a goth pub. The place and the people look great. The music is awesome. I want to like it. But it is just a shame they make such a poor attempt at serving real ale not even drinkable. I guess they like to serve a drink with the same name of the pub, but if they are not going to do it properly then they really shouldn't bother. read more

Fun pub to visit if you are a fan of the Gothic subculture. It's a typical little place that is a meeting spot to have a few pints before going to a show or club in the Camden area. Nice people, and decent dj's the times I've been. Prices are reasonable and the decor is typical pub, with some art and manequins... This is not a "theme pub." read more

Renown Goth pub The Dev in the heart of Camden. It is an old building and feels historic. Since a change of brewery some say it is not what it was. Although its décor is ostensibly gothic (not as much as it used to be though) it embraces customers from other subcultures including Industrial, Metal, Punk and Cyber. The music is a mix and there are various DJ's. Customers range from Goths in full gear to a couple of guys in tails and pin stripe trousers, with wire rim glasses, who looked like they were from the cast of Dombey and Son except they had fangs. It is used as a meet up point before clubbing or after shopping in the market and it can get very packed. it is not a big pub and all on one floor.Not sure it still has a dress code, which was strictly Goth, alternate is ok..other cultures no. The door staff turn them away. It sells draught beer which is pretty good if a tad expensive. Worth it to go sit and people watch but dress appropriately or you will get stares or be refused entry. This pub is great for a drink before a gig or before heading elsewhere. It is just out the centre of Camden so ideal if that is where you are heading for the rest of the night. The Devonshire Arms is a dark and gothic pub, someone in a tracksuit would look extremely out of place here. It is usually quite quite until 8pm here, well, when I say quiet I mean quiet people wise the music is very loud! I wouldn't recommend it for people who don't like their metally, industrial type music. The best thing about this pub is the ceiling with all the posters on - it looks really cool! One thing to note though - this pub has now been taken over by 'Hobgoblin'. read more

It's pretty cool for all the subcultures and they play pretty good music. But personally the sight of dead rats in bin bags outside that my boyfriend spotted a few years back made me rather hesitant of coming back. Only go there when I am desperate for loo these days :) but as long as you are wearing the right clothes and enjoy alternative music you can have a good evening there and meet some great people read more

The Devonshire Arms (as this is still called to any who know it) is not quite what it used to be (it had a strict gothic/alternative dress code) but neverthless plays a GREAT mix of music, does good theme nights and pulls a good crowd. The Devonshire Arms, better known as The Dev, is a pub which serves a mainly Gothic/alternative clientele. The musical genres favoured by the resident djs (as well as by the audience, I might add) are Gothic Rock - traditional and otherwise - EBM, Industrial, Darkwave, Synth/futurepop and a variety of experimental subgenres of these. The atmosphere inside The Dev is friendly and laid-back, and I have yet to experience any rowdy behaviour inside of the pub. The Dev has recently fallen into the hands of new owners and has as a result of this undergone some changes, for better or for worse. The music played at The Dev is now more Metal and less Goth, and so is the clientele. A proof of this is that the door policy and the desscode has been changed so that now normal blue jeans and suchlike garnments are allowed inside the pub. However, The Dev, though not quite its usual old self, is still one of my favourite haunts. read more

I was out at the dev on my birthday and had the worse treatment ever. I've lived in 4 diferente countries and I never ever saw any staff treating customers so rudely in my entire life. First I called the girl to say nobody was serving the side I was. She was as rude as possible saying that she was busy with another customer. Even not deserving I kindly asked her to give me a beer after serving her customer. Believe it or not, she basically ignored me with a horrible face like the worse thing on earth was being there doing what she was doing. Well, find another job instead of spreading rudeness? After a while, yet not being served, the guy was around I asked him to please serve me because nobody was coming to the side of the bar I was. He told me to wait (like always they do) and when he came back I said- ahhhh thanks finally half an hour I'm here. To obviously joke and give them feedback? the customers aren't happy? He insulted me I felt terrified when he replied saying- ok wait for other 5 minutes. Unbelievable!! This experience with horrible customer service isn't the first i had at the dev in Camden. Other two times I stood up and went to drink somewhere else because I had the feeling like I was bothering the staff that obviously hate working there. For the owners and managers: you are loosing lots of money with the currently staffing you wrongly let there to serve us. It isn't only me saying. I have friends that prefer to drink anywhere else before heading to the Dev. read more
