Ahh, The Hawley Arms. We found ourselves in Camden again on a Sunday looking for a good Sunday Roast. A couple of years ago we had a great roast at the Lock Tavern nearby but when we went there, they said they stopped serving it. Not sure why. A staff member there recommended The Hawley Arms as a substitute. There is a new Amy Winehouse mural outside on the South side of the building so we took a photo there before going inside. As most places in Camden, this was busy inside. We were directed upstairs where there was a large seating area and a bar. What more do you need? This was my second Sunday Roast this time in London so I decided to try the chicken roast while my wife had the traditional beef roast My daughter had the veg roast. We also had a couple of Mochas and a Guinness. The food is delivered via an old school dumbwaiter from the kitchen. Overall, everything was great and super tasty with nice service. The Yorkshire pudding was a bit dry and not as good as others I've had but all else was great. I recommend The Hawley Arms for the historic nature of this place and some good pub grub and drinks. read more

Stopped here for an unbooked Sunday lunch with my Best Friend. We sat upstairs and the service / ordering process was easy. We both ordered the halloumi battered with chips and a bottle of bubbly to share. The halloumi was delicious and cooked in a way that it just melted in your mouth. Being already rich there was no sauce to accompany it but the table tomato sauce was adequate and the salad dressing was moorish. Some of my favourite sweets are Haribo gummi bears. I am especially partial to the white ones and will pick them out of a package before eating the other colours. I've always found it a bit odd when British folks call my beloved bears "jelly babies." Well, until I came to the Hawley Arms! It was in this Camden pub that I sampled my first jelly baby. And yes, they are indeed shaped like babies (does anyone else find noshing on baby-shaped candy super strange?) They don't taste as nice as Haribo gummi bears, but that wouldn't stop me from eating them again! The Hawley Arms didn't wow me, nor did I feel particularly at home there but the drinks were decent and overall it's a solid pub. read more

Yep I love music and the music history certainly seeps through the walls here and everything on paper tells me I should absolutely love this pub. But I don't. I'm sorry. Amy Winehouse used to hang out here. I've lost count how many now famous indie bands have walked through the doors of this pub at some point, I've bumped in to a few in my time. They have live music here. The beer is ok. Its a 5 minute walk from my house! DAMMIT! Why don't I like you Hawley Arms!? I've been in to this pub a lot in my time. I don't actually know why I keep going back. Maybe its because I should like this place and I go in hope that each time will be better than all of the other times. Maybe its the friends that come and visit me in Camden that keep asking me to take them to 'ahh that famous pub, The Hawley!?' There's just a weird vibe about this place, where it thinks and some of the clientele think that they are better than everyone else in an annoying way. I just don't get it, its definitely not a cool, laid back rock n roll vibe though and I certainly haven't experienced it in any other drinking establishments in Camden. It baffles me. I read with great sadness the burning down of the Hawley Arms in Camden. I went there once for a friend's birthday and had an absolute blast. Fortunately it's reopened and been refurbished, but despite them making every possible visible effort to make it what it once was, the Hawley Arms sadly is not. It's not that it's bad, it's just like a buying a car that's been in an accident: everything is in place and it seems to work fine, but that magical feeling is gone. I had to sneak a laugh at their fireplace: it contains a very accurate chalk rendition of flaming embers. The best part of their efforts to refurbish was the use of the original wooden rafters that were not burned down. The layout has changed a fair amount and the front section is quite a bit smaller, though a really cool upstairs section now exists which will be popular with smokers. All the pictures signed by celebrities that once adorned the walls have now been exchanged with Polaroid montages peppered with the odd 'I Love Hawley' sign. Not quite the same, but definitely not quite what it was. read more

As far as I can tell the Hawley Arms has gained its notoriety by serving drinks to Amy Winehouse and Kate Moss and then by getting burnt down in the Camden stable fires earlier this year. Personally I am of the opinion that walking into a pub inhabited by Ms Winehouse is less preferable to having a sumo wrestler walk across my crotch in stilettos, but if celeb-spotting is your game (god help you) then the Hawley is a good bet. Admittedly the pub itself does look pretty lush and the bar staff are terribly pretty but (and I know it's noones fault) the whole ordeal left me feeling a little nauseated. Everyone felt like a hanger-on, there to be seen rather than relax and enjoy themselves. Food and drinks-wise things are pretty standard pub fare with prices that struck me as a little out of keeping with the quality. Not too impressed. read more

A quite trad pub with a cool edge to it, plenty of room, and a real open fire is always a nice touch in winter. There's a heated outdoor terrace for the smokers amongst you too. *UPDATE Tragically, The Hawley Arms was destroyed in a massive fire round Camden Market the other night. Awful news indeed. Great Pub, comfortable, laid back with great staff and jukebox. There is food if you are hungry, while not gourmet it does the job. I love the upstairs with the comfortable chairs and big windows. I've spent two lazy Sunday afternoons enjoying the laid back atmosphere and the cozy decor; and the last word I would use to describe either of my experiences would be "pretentious." But I am blonde ... so I've been known to miss elephant sized 'social cues' from time to time. 'Twas AOK indeed. A few items of interest: 1. Infamously, a past haunt of Amy Winehouse. 2. Maybe less infamously, provides "jelly babies" with the bill. (see Miriam's review) A gal pal and I snagged a (very small) table right next to the espresso machine and I have to say, I felt wedged in for the meal. Between the noise of that machine (though I forgive it, as it expresses coffee for all of us) and the chair behind me that was back to back, and the table itself that was about the size of a postage stamp...things were a bit crowded from the get go. The food and beer were all fairly standard. ---- STOP, STOP! I'm sorry GUYS! Three-star reviews are not the most thrilling to write. I'll cut it off here as I've said all I've needed to say. It's a pub by Camden Market that'll serve you a beer and some grub, but it's not really that special. It's not great, it's not horrible and Amy Winehouse used to hang out here. This was easily my favorite pub in London. Located right in the heart of Camden Town. We popped in here for lunch and a pint on a Sunday afternoon after wandering the market. They serve Pieminister pies, which I was anxious to try. We all loved our pies! Both the beef and ale and the chicken and chorizo were delicious. Even the rest of their menu sounded great. This pub never ceases to be underwhelming. It's by no means awful and the crowd isn't, either. The layout of the place is awkward and it always feels like it's hard to find a place to sit or stand, even when there are empty tables. It will be around forever, I reckon, and I don't mind going there from time to time when visiting friends want some Amy Winehouse nostalgia, but I don't go out of my way for it. read more

Saturday brought sun and that inspired a little pub crawl. A fine day of drinking started here because their sidewalk chalkboard said, "spring starts here" and I decided to go with it. In true English fashion, I put on my scarf, pulled up my gloves, and took my pint to a wooden table in the little "garden" (read: smoking section) out back. I angled my face towards the big fireball in the sky and tried to convince myself it was a sign of warmer days to come. There was some good people watching to be had. I'm used to the Shoreditch brand of hipster, so this allowed me to view a different variety. The biggest difference seems to be the amount of red lipstick. I swear the boy sitting to my right was a forest nymph and if I was further along the pub crawl I would have asked him to grant me a wish. To my left was a man in camouflage having a burger and talking to his friend about cars. A little something for everyone. Bonus: Dyson Air Blade hand dryers in the loo. I had a terrible cold the first time I visited the Hawley Arms. This was a few years back, pre-fire. I begged the bartender for a Hot Toddy. To my surprise he happily obliged. In fact, he went to great length to get the tea piping hot and stick cloves in the orange rind. I will forever remember him for that. I came back a few times that week and clearly irritated another bartender with the same request. My bad. I don't know if its simply because I am American or if he just didn't feel like busying himself on my behalf with a pain in the ass cocktail, but he wasn't happy about it. Gone are the good old days .... sure you can still have fun nights here but the crowd is a group of local kids who have been there every night for the past 6 years, tourists and suits. The bartenders put the same playlists from their ipods every night always a bit too loud and will ignore you whenever there is something more interesting to do or look at. The Hawley Arms patrons are a true symbol of Camdenitis. Ill fitting jeans. Pants hanging out for all to see. The ragged looking tops and unshaven faces accompany the ill fitting jeans with asses hanging out. Local Camdenites love there alternative music and typical non-polished pub feel. The Hawley Arms delivers with its 'blah' uninspiring interior the locals clearly love. Yet with a decent selection of draught lager, good options on spirits, this bar will be a Camden destination spot for years to come. P.s. They sell sweets behind the bar. As a proud members of the 'When I grow up I want to be exactly like Winehouse' facebook group, my friend and I made a stop into this infamous establishment on our last trip to Camden Taaaan. Not that this was our goal, biker boots and "leather" jackets was our mission. Recently refurbished to look as closely to how it did before people revamped the nursery rhyme to 'Camden's Burning' or beloved Amy shouted her support for her stomping ground to a bunch of bemused Americans at an awards show, it doesn't scrub up (or down as it were) too badly. It still has a very old, ruggedly feel to it with quirky decor and although it's not that small, the lack of space gives it a more intimate vibe. The drinks are not all that expensive and there's a nice roof top to sit on for a smoke or just to listen to the bustle below. This place is always chilled out and relaxed, and the lack of pretentiousness suits me to the ground. The best times to go are obviously Friday and Saturday evenings. The daytime clientele are usually tourists and old folk but it's nice if you want a quite one away from throngs of peeps. All in all a rather nice little pub to which I shall be returning next week en mass with others. Sadly I never met Amy or Pete Doherty but on the bright side Phil is tapping his biker boots and I sit comfortably in my jacket as I type. Mission accomplished = Happy Yelper :) read more

Having been here a few times in the evenings I expected lunch to be a similar affair (evenings are fantastic but a little grungy and busy for this place to make it into my lunch time shortlist). Well, I was in for a real surprise, the service was second to none - our waiter was awesome, table service for food and drinks, decently priced grub, no waiting for anything. A real surprise. The only things stopping me giving five stars are the beer (this is a Greene King place and their beers tend to suck) and the food (it felt a little standard-pub-grub like; fish cakes, burgers and roasts were as exciting as the menu got). If they got a few guest beers in and let the chef create his own menu this would be an amazing place. read more

The Hawley Arms was the last stop for us on our Camden Pub crawl. To be honest, I was not a big fan of the majority of the pubs we visited that evening, but this one was awesome. I haven't been really into the majority of pubs I have visited in Camden. To be honest, sometimes they are a bittttt to trashy for my taste. But I totally dig the overall vibe of this pub. A great, eclectic set of music is playing, there are large tables with comfy booths, and the crowd is chill and just out for a good time. There is a very down to earth feel here, making it a great place for a few reasonably priced pints or glasses of vino. Also, the pub sells sweets that are gloriously on display under the light in jars right up at the bar. Totally awesome! read more

First time there tonight, was having a blast of a time with yungblud and his fans. Then due to my mental health issues I had to go down stairs to calm down for literally a minute and I have the wristband to get back upstairs but this white in his thirty's foreign security guard wouldn't let me go back up, so for the next nearly hour I had spoken too another security guard, two managers and the owner of this pub and I was brought back up for not even a minute then the same security guard told me to leave coz 'I had a bad attitude' Honestly pathetic!!! My night ruined and to top it of i don't live in that area, the trains were shut and there was no bus for another couple hours, it was 3am. read more

What I especially like about The Hawley Arms is that it has not disappeared up its own arse in a cloud of self satisfied smugness. While the hype and press about this place has sometimes been a little excessive; it was, and remains a fun, laid back boozer which pretty much fulfils your entertainment needs. I love to come here for a Sunday lunch (if I can find a spot free that is). Trust me, this pub is one of the best places in Camden to tuck into a roast and a bottle of red, and watch the day gently ebb away. They also do a very good range of Pieminster pies, which I had with some mash, and then split a sticky toffee pudding - this is the only place that I will treat myself to such a naughty treat. I also think the staff are great. Friendly, helpful and laid back. The scruffy and oh so cute bar man who served us lunch was so chatty that he even came to sit down with us for a bit. There are plenty of places around Camden where the staff are too cool for school (Lock Tavern I'm looking at you), so its a pleasure to be treated so well here. If you were unsure about this place because of the fear of walking into a room full of 500 Amy Winehouse wannabes I wouldn't worry - its not like that at all here. read more

Great pub stop on our day trip to Camden. My husband ordered the chicken burger and I had the blues burger. Both came with a side of triple cooked chips and we shared a scotch egg. Surprised to find Red Stripe on tap which was awesome! I also had a Bloody Mary the size of my head- delicious! Not longing to meet either Fielding or Winehouse i can honestly say that the best nights I've had at The Hawley Arms are when me and friends have managed to find a table. I might sound like an old man by saying this, but trying to enjoy drinks and conversation with friends whilst being repeatedly pushed, barked at (by skinny teenage girls) and generally harassed by scene kids isnt my idea of fun. The interior of the renovated pub looks amazing though, and the choice of drinks is excellent. On the right night The Hawley Arms is amazing. read more

Loud (but excellent) music, beautiful old pub, excellent history, rockers. Take your date and your axe, but leave your mum out of it . . . unless she was a groupie for the 'Stones. Also, the beer selection is bizarre (Olde Trippe, Hawley Ale, and some other such), and needs a bit of re-thinking. Why not just have Abbot Ale and Greene King IPA? Our trip of European drunken debauchery began here, at The Hawley Arms. As many have stated, the crowd is fun and enjoyable. The lady bar tenders were good looking and the drinks reasonably priced. For someone who is converting USD to GBP, this is a big deal. The music was pretty good, but your standard juke box selection. The few items we ordered to nosh on (cheese sticks, fries) were also tasty. Just an overall good place to enjoy a few pints and some snacks amongst friends. Hawley Arms is reopen! London rejoice! In the heart of Camden, Hawley Arms is an institution. The kind of place frequented by Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson, it has finally recovered from the fire which claimed it in early 2008. Last night I was lucky enough to be invited to the re-opening and saw British band Razorlight play off the balcony to hundreds of fans which lined the street. Inside and it felt like home. Gorgeous Camden folk, dark wooden features, jars full of sweets behind the bar and a great range of wines, lagers and spirits. There's a courtyard too for smokers, seemingly small but seemed to fit a lot of people out there. I know where I'll be spending the winter! read more

Oh, the Hawley Arms - like Phoenix from the flames. Like Jesus, it rises again. To the beautiful Camdenites that frequent this boozer, this is how they feel about the recent reopening of Hawley Arms after it was destroyed in a fire that also claimed much of the market earlier this year. I used to come here a lot, it's a really nice place with an electric atmosphere, and fantastic for celeb spotting. Or just having a perv at the hotties that both work and drink here. Since Amy Winehouse publicly declared her love for this place, it exists more on reputation than anything else, but with an esteemed celeb clientele it's always going to be a popular choice. read more

As a frequent customer of the old Hawley Arms I was left a bit disappointed by the revival of this new counterpart. Don't get me wrong, even though some of the layout has changed, and they have added a few bits and bobs such as the new Dyson hand drier in the toilets, they have done a good job at trying to bring back its original look, but somehow they have lost a little of that special something that had been able to make Hawley everyone's favourite boozer. Let me tell you about the old Hawley Arms: It was the local hotspot for many London celebrities, a place where you would often queue up for the toilet only to see Amy Winehouse and Kelly Osbourne come out of the same cubicle before you. You could also spy on Noel Fielding and his charming attitude as he flitted about the pub flirting with girls and leaving with a different one each time. I am not really fussed about seeing celebs, but I must admit they were always entertaining. There were also hoards of autographed band photographs on the walls, of which sadly enough most of them must have burnt down. The jukebox was always on the go, and it had one of the best selections London has to offer. And last but not least, my favourite part of the pub was the owner's young black labrador, Lily, who was always friendly with everyone and always up for a belly scratch or a pat on the head. I still enjoy the new Hawley, and am hoping that after it has 'lived' a little it will be able to regain that magic atmosphere that inhabited it so well before. Good luck Hawley. read more

The Hawley Arms, my girlfriend delightfully turned to me and says, is full of girls! Girls! Crazy. My girlfriend obviously hasn't seen the news reels, heard about the incredible elite that favour this pub. There are some truly big names who drink here, but I personally am not a fan. The pub is well aware of its own importance and as such, have increased drink prices by about 60%. When I walked in, a lot of girls scrutinised me, hoping I was famous. Fortunately, they realised I was a carbon copy of George Clooney and we had a bit of a good time. Really, I just left quite quickly. read more
