Definitely worth the stop. I came in because they were listed as a Daptone dealer on the record…read morelabels website. Unfortunately I didn't find an abnormal amount of Daptone, or any of the Daptone 7" records they're famous for. I was also hoping to find Daptone accessories and didn't see any, like the 45 rpm branded weights. However, it is a good store, I did find a new sealed record and a used record. I could have bought more, but the prices were a little high, and I owned most of the stuff, it didn't go too deep, lot of the basic popular stuff and modern stuff. One thing I saw was a lot of representation of local artists, which I really like and respect when a store helps their local scene. Staff were very friendly, and helpful. I overheard someone getting a recommendation and they were cared for well. Great store for the area, I'd stop in and check them out again if I were nearby.

And if you look hard enough, there are places that analog luddites are welcome. One such place is the Record Collector in Iowa City, alive and kicking since 1982. They sell "almost as ancient" CDs as well. I stumbled upon Record Collector by accident as I was passing time before the nearby 2022 Homecoming Parade. The place is full of vinyl goodness, and even a few turntables if you need equipment support to play these beauties. Heck, my favorite thing was to just look the various jackets over and reminisce about where I was in life when that record came out. Also enjoyable is listening to whatever they're playing over the loud speaker. Unlike a good used book store, the Record Collector is easy to navigate with well defined and organized racks. The also have website of which all sorts of ordering possibilities await.

Prices were steep. I like to support local businesses, especially record stores, but I know what…read morethose records go for and what online wholesalers sell them for. If you're higher than other stores by an unacceptable amount I'll support the online wholesaler instead. It doesn't give me that warm feeling I get holding a record, looking at it, and deciding to buy it, and it's putting small business out of business, but if I know you got that on millions of records for $4-10 and you're trying to get 25-30 bucks I can't support you. The used records were priced what the new records should have cost. If it's not rare, I'm not paying $15 for something I can get for $2-5 at a record show back in Chicago... So I'm too spoiled to buy anything here but they had a decent collection, staff seemed nice, plenty of inventory. I wouldn't go back, but it might work for this town/people.

The staff was very friendly and the environment of the store is incredibly welcoming and cozy. While they don't have the largest selection in the area, I was pleasantly surprised to find numerous records which I had not seen anywhere else. One of the other cool things about the store is that they provide perfectly sized shopping bags while you are making your selection. These bags come in incredibly handy to hold on to whatever records you are planning on purchasing so that you don't need to set them on the floor or on top of the records. This perk is wonderful. Plus there are little hooks around the store which you can then hang the bags on in order to have both hands available to browse their selection. If there is one thing which I will complain about, and it is the reason I did not give the store five stars, it is the organization of the records. Within the genre of records, there appears to be no organizational structure whatsoever for the vinyl. This makes trying to find a particular record almost impossible without having to flip through hundreds of records which you simply don't care about. While I can imagine that it is a nice way to possibly find albums you didn't know you wanted, it was very frustrating and after about 30 minutes of looking through the albums, I simply gave up because I did not have the patience to go through every album in the store looking for a particular one. I will certainly return to the store anytime I am in the area but if you are looking for someplace that you can pop in, look for a specific record, and then leave, this is not it. If you are looking for a store in which you will spend an hour simply browsing through a selection, look no further, this is your place.

This antique store is heavy focused on old stereo equipment and music. There is furniture and…read morebooks. Thereare many LP and 45 records. There are even some 78 records. If you are interested in music it is necessary to ask the owner for the organization method in order to find what you are looking for. Do bring cash. Cards are not accepted. Prices are fair. You can get better at a yard sale, but have to spend a long time looking. You are spend much more at a dedicated record store and get better organizing and renewed sleeves. I would got back.

I think the front bagged stuff was a good selection but I can't pay those prices when discogs and eBay exist. I have an ultrasonic and returns are guaranteed online. I'll gamble online before paying $30 for a record I've seen elsewhere for $5-10. Plus most good albums have been reissued at about $20. Some people may want an OG copy, I don't get paying more than the reissue price for a used OG record that looks eh.... Now the stuff in back had some good stuff too, but it should have been $5 a record and I'd have bought a bunch, they're just not worth $10 for common stuff. I don't need to fill out my collection that much, and nothing was rare or uncommon really. I managed to find a couple things I was ok with buying, was eventually helped at the counter, and was then told they only take cash. Who carries cash? I'm not 60..... cards are everything these days. So I wasted a half hour to an hour browsing through overpriced records just to be turned away. I could have found an ATM, but I'm out of town. So we tack an ATM fee on to the overpriced records too? Nah, didn't feel like it, so drove back to my hotel in Cedar Rapids... If you need decent copies of mostly basic albums (classics) with the occasional gem or underpriced record, come here with a lot of time, and cash only. Moral of this story? A question - You talked my ear off when I arrived but mentioned nothing of cash only? Waste of both our time.

Has it been vacuumed in the last 10 years? Who cares? Does he have the best collection of vintage rock, heavy metal, and country in Des Moines? Absolutely. The owner is quiet and leaves you be. The music he plays is low-key and innocuous, alienating no one. His prices are just right: $30-50 bucks for most original pressings in good shape, and very rare ones are $100ish. If he charged less there'd be nothing to look at here. It's like a great guitar shop - you go there partially just to look at all the cool stuff. The new vinyl record stores are fake -everything they carry is was made from a digital master; just a vinyl version of a CD. All the other old record shops have a lousy collection and completely arbitrary prices. This place is totally legit.
