Been to the Fisher Mall I few times and noticed this Tim Ho Wan-look-alike restaurant called The Dimsum Place. Was given an opportunity to drop by Fisher Mall again so we finally tried it. It has a Tim Ho Wan ambiance and the food served is Cantonese cuisine. Price is affordable as most of the dishes have big servings. They also have a wide array of items to choose from. Here are some of the dishes we ordered:
BBQ Pork Bun. Score: 1/5
I wanted to try these buns because it was recommended by another customer (through the app SWARM) and they can be compared to its competitors. This was utterly disappointing. First, the bun is very oily. The oil transferred to my fingers after eating it. The filling, if you even consider it a filling, contains just a few bits and pieces of the bbq pork. There is not much inside, all you can eat is the bun and the sauce. My wife described the bun as "siopao bun on the bottom, kopi bun on top". Compared to its competitors, cannot even be compared to. A rip off!
Asado Rice Roll (Vermicelli Roll). Score: 2/5
A key ingredient to this dish's taste is the sweet soy sauce it is accompanied with. For the sauce, it is ok. This rice roll has a weird sweet taste because of the added corn kernels. I am not sure if this is a good idea. My dislike for this dish starts with the rice roll. It is too thick and seemed like a store-bought version. The asado is thickly-cut and a little tough to chew. After the first roll, you would not want to have another helping again.
Pork and Century Egg Congee. Score: 4/5
Probably the only edible dish of the night. All of their congee comes with fresh egg and adds great flavor to the dish. The pork slices are thinly cut and tender. The century though is diced so it's flavor had a difficult time to shine. The congee was cooked long and well as you can no longer chew on the rice. The crispy wonton skins it came along with was too oily that I didn't even bother to add it to my congee.
Crispy Raddish Cake. Score 3/5
Regular raddish cake that is friend with breadcrumbs. Tasted like regular raddish cake in dimsum restaurants in Chinatown, but not better than THW because the raddish cannot be seen. The dish is also very oily because the breadcrumb sucked all the oil while cooking.
Curry Lamb Mutton. Score 3/5
Lamb is tender. Curry is very light as if only a hint, curry taste is overpowered by the lamb's aroma and flavor.
Chicken Feet. Score 4/5
Chicken feet cooked tender and is "meatier" than most on the market.
Hakao. Score 5/5
Shrimp dumplings with a rice vermicelli skin. Perfectly cooked.
Mala Cake. Score 2/5
The cake is not bad, but it is disappointingly just a cake. The original Mala Cake (or Malay Cake) has several "termite holes" inside the cake, meaning it is not a perfect smooth slice because of the breakings. The texture is also a bit sticky and a hint of crispiness. Their version is really just a cake, using cake flour.
Was going to try their Cold Milk Custard but was already too full. Maybe next time, if I go back.
Service is fast, attentive, and accommodating. The only annoying part is the receptionist with the cymbals, noisily inviting people to enter. I think I got a slight headache after the dinner. read more
