What a magical sunset sail! The staff were incredible from booking to dock - and Ethan was an amazing amazing Captain singing sea shanty ballads, telling funny stories, versed in history of the Lost Colony and ships, and kind and friendly. We saw dolphins and an incredible sunset with mild and steady winds- my three year old loved it!!! They have great shirts too and we picked one up! Highly recommend this special cruise in such a special place!

Great sunset while on the sail

Just finished a great sunset sailing trip in Manteo, NC upon the Downeast Rover. Highly recommend this sailing adventure

Great experience overall this past weekend. Made reservations the day of for the evening sunset cruise. Highly recommend for a casual evening on a boat. Come early to explore Manteo! It's a lovely place. Wish we explored more. Street parking was plentiful. Ethan was awesome and met us to board us. We loved his enthusiasm and the nuggets of information he was sharing about the area. Water is fairly shallow (less than 6ft) incase anyone was curious. Towards the end, we were fortunate enough to catch some fantastic cloud formations before the rain storm which was a great addition to our relaxing experience.

This was a great day cruise. Captain Kim and Captain Tim were wonderful. We highly recommend taking this excursion.

Very friendly crew, beautiful views, and a great experience; what better could you ask for.

My extended family ended up booking all 25 seats on last nights sunset sail (across a few reservations). When we arrived, the dock was bustling with activity from nearby shops and a separate boat tour. Mate Ethan was relaxed on the bow and Captain Kim greeted us. We introduced ourselves and explained we were unsure of where to check in. "You just did" he causally replied. Captain Kim and Mate Ethen had just set the very relaxed feel for the evening. Once we boarded, Mate Ethan gave us the safety run down which was the most serious part of the adventure. From there, our group passed snacks and the rum punch we brought and enjoyed the beautiful sights and sounds of the bay. Captain Kim and Mate Ethan were able to quickly locate a school of dolphins playing and we sailed around them for a while. The whole experience was absolutely magical And so relaxing. You'll never see a harder working Mate than Ethan - in between shuffling around the boat adjusting **insert boat terms here**, he was helping the captain eye the shallow channels of the bay and telling us awesome stories about the area and past sails. What to know: - it's a proper sail boat and you'll not be able to stand up and wander around for the 2 hour cruise (low sides and moving jibs **insert more boat terms** are moving around and you don't want to slide off or be knocked off) - there is a bathroom on board (marine bathroom. Read: you're not going to want to hang out in there) - kids are safest in the front of the boat, so adults should be aware that's where they'll be sitting - the bay is really (REALLY) shallow so not many other boats operate there. It'll be a very uncongested cruise - there are nearby public restrooms in a public pavilion - Travel FYI: if you happen to be in Currituck county, plan for a 1 hour ride from Corolla to the dock - In August (80F weather) I went at sunset wearing shorts and a tank top and felt very comfortable

We had such a delightful experience viewing the sunset, Manteo and the Roanoke sound yesterday evening while sailing on the Downeast Rover. We were comfortable and had no nausea as I have on smaller boats sometimes. My son and I are grateful we came upon this opportunity while spending time together. Thank you Kim and Kim for your hospitality and cheerfulness.

Thank you so much for a lovely sunset cruise! Could not have asked for a better way to end our trip to the Outer Banks. Pictures say a thousand words. Great job everyone! Kim and Ed West Chester, PA.

Nice way to spend an afternoon…read more After beach, sand, sun, beach, sand, sun, it was a nice break to do something different. Our neighbors at the house we rented suggested dolphin watching and recommended Capt. Stuart Wescott and his tour. Wasn't too happy that I had to travel down to Manteo (car travel in the Outer Banks can be murder - worst than the GW bridge in rush hour). Luckily, it wasn't as bad as I had feared. The quaint little town of Manteo was an added bonus. Nice seaport-esque village with nice quaint little stores. As for the cruise itself, you actually sail with Capt Wescott. He was very nice and knowledgeable. Told silly jokes to keep the voyage light hearted. Sold drinks at a very reasonable price. The bathroom was also very convenient and clean. Strangely, this seems to be a selling point compared to their competitors. Saw many dolphins. Very docile and peaceful. Don't expect any flips or spins or twists. This isn't a SeaWorld show. The captain was very patient. Kept us out there a while until everyone had their fill of watching dolphins swim. After the initial excitement of finding and seeing the dolphins, there's only so much more you can watch, at least for me. On the downside, it is a touch expensive for a ferry ride but comparable to everyone else. Overall, a nice alternative If you need a break from the beach to let the sunburn recover.

My family and I have enjoyed this particular company for several years now. We always see dolphins…read more The Captain is very knowledgable and entertaining. The boat is spacious, clean and shaded. I highly recommend Outer Banks Cruises A.K.A. Captain Johnny's Dolphin Tour.

If you have a lot of people going along, it can get pricey, but for us, it was worth every penny and the hour long drive down from the northern end of the island. The kids start off with a pirate tattoo - our little mateys decided on "PIRATES!" knuckle tattoos and a seashell - and getting dressed up in pirate garb. There are accessories too for purchase, but we told our niece and nephew that we could do ice cream after if they forego the swords. Thank God, they chose wisely. At that point, adult chaperones, just sit back, relax, and take some picture, because the crew takes care of everything. They sneak the kids through town onto the boat and take them through an adventure complete with finding a treasure map, firing water cannons at Stinky Pete the pirate, and sharing the booty. In reality, you're driving around in circles, and the ship's captain will have a few fun asides for the adults, but the kids really buy into it, and the crew is top notch. They really get into it, which I believe is saying something for these guys putting on multiple shows a day, many times a week.

The mate, Jinx, and "Captain Blarney" did a great job! The music was spot on and they kept the kids entertained the entire time. I loved it too! The pirate costume to borrow and tattoo was a nice way to start the adventure! The cost is pricey, but we all had a nice time! They have a tip jar out (well deserved) and it was nice they didn't even ask for a tip or stand there at the end of the voyage with the jar. If you have a little one 3-9 they'd probably love it too.

Labor Day before heading back home, so I called to schedule three for parasailing gave her the weight paid for it over the phone when we get there we were 14lb. Kitty Hawk Kites along the Manteo waterfront earns four stars from me largely based on my experience with renting kayaks. My husband and I wanted a scenic and easy paddle and we thought Manteo would be a great place for that. Plus with a recent, rare manatee sighting in the area I wanted to see if manatees do really wear novelty tees. Anyway, we didn't see any manatees but we did have a nice kayak trip. We found 60 minutes was plenty to explore the area and take some photos. Ken was helpful with getting us launched and I liked the setup they have for climbing into kayaks. As far as shopping goes, Kitty Hawk Kites in Manteo is a very small storefront so if you're serious about shopping for a kite I'd recommend going to the Nags Head location first thing in the morning before it turns into a tourist zoo. The Manteo storefront is very small and cramped but does have some kites, spinners, windsock, toys and souvenirs.
