Capt Juan Carlos Torruella of Extreme Fishing PR. I emailed him for dates and rates, he was fast to respond and easy to schedule. Nothing complicated as easy as it should be. We scheduled a 4hr (2 to 6pm) trip. The day could have not been more perfect. As we departed on our trip the Captain was more than helpful in explaining what we should expect. He answered all our questions and made my kid feel safe and entertained. 7 year olds can get bored easily... NOT TODAY he was excited, happy and wanting more... needless to say me too. The Tally: My kid got 9 Tarpon and 3 Robalo I got 4 and 1 Total 13 Tarpon / 4 Robalo I can't thank Juan Carlos Torruella for the great experience!! 5 Stars is not enough... The Laguna de Condado has two tiny beaches on the northern and southwestern areas. At the…read moresoutheastern part is the Jaime Benitez park. There is no beach here but you can enter the lagoon on your paddleboard or kayak. There is a kayak rental. The park is also good for exercising and playing sports. There is a path for walking, jogging or cycling. Safe, family friendly and dog friendly. There is a parking lot and street parking available, restrooms, and a soda machine. There is no parking for the beach on the northern section. A nonprofit conservation group called El Estuario de La Bahia de San Juan hosts a family friendly event every 1st Saturday of the month here with games and educational topics. At 7pm they screen a movie free of charge. The movies are dubbed in Spanish with English subtitles. Overall, the Laguna is a nice place to hang out.

I found a few charters in the area and honestly it was chance that led me to select Puerto Rico Tarpon Connection. Captain Rafa responded to my emails swiftly and made me feel comfortable leading up to our trip. The night prior to our trip, I couldn't sleep a wink. I was as excited as a kid on Christmas Eve. Our trip began on a rainy morning as a Puerto Rico "Cool Front" (80 degrees) had just come through. My wife who is not as experienced in fishing accompanied us. Captain Rafa offered her his only rain jacket which meant a lot to me. We began by catching bait and Rafa immediately put us on the fish. I believe we hooked up with approximately 10-15 tarpon during the course of our 4 our trip. We landed 5 fish (approximately 20 lbs or so). When Rafa and I weren't discussing our love for fishing, he and my wife were discussing their love for good food. Our day concluded with the Captain taking us to an area where we could feed wild Tarpon in the shallows with the remaining unused bait. What an experience!!! At the conclusion of the charter, the captain sat down and had lunch with us and advised us of some amazing local must-haves. The memories of this trip will be something that will last a lifetime. I appreciated Captain Rafa's professionalism and more importantly his concern for my wife's comfort and enjoyment during the trip. I feel like we definitely made a friend in Puerto Rico and are already discussing our next trip here. My next trip may include two tarpon charters and I won't use the services of anyone else but Captain Rafa!!! The…read morecaptain read us the standard guide as soon as we were on board, mentioning there were drinks in the cooler and where the restroom was and what we'd be going for. Minutes later we were off. Most of us hung out in the back of the boat on the way out with the deckhand. The deckhand was friendly and sociable, talking about Puerto Rico as well as the fishing there. This was about the highlight of the excursion which for all we paid was a very expensive conversation. One out of the bay we proceeded to troll for the next 3 hours, with not so much as a single bite. In addition to this the water was quite rough, more so than the 4-5 foot swells the captain described. Though having been offshore fishing a number of times we know this is just par for the course, but be prepared for it. If its normal for this time of year as they described expect for some to get seasick. While I didn't expect to be out there all day until we caught something the fact that we came up empty handed and were back in the boat slip in under 4 hrs from our departure was a bit of a letdown. Further as we arrived back the captain didn't say a word to the group, in fact no word from him since he swiped the credit card before we even departed. If we had landed on fish I would have more likely given 3 stars, but even then the experience pending a record setting marlin would have just been an alright one.
