Do yourself a favor and book a tour with these guys. My husband and I met a man in El Yunque National Forrest who recommended these guys. We called later that day and booked a morning tour for the very next day (a Friday) to fish for Tarpin. I know it's called fishing and not catching, and I would have been happy with even just one fish but we caught SEVERAL! I caught a couple monstrous fish I didn't even know how to hold (biggest fish I've ever caught at 30 or so pounds). Carlos was patient and knew the habits of the Tarpin and we were able to catch several even after their morning feeding time died down. We had a blast. Very pleasant day, absolutely no complaints, Carlos catered to us and made sure we had everything we needed and patiently reminded me when I needed to correct my rod in order to pull the fish in.

Captan Carlos was great! The fishing was a little slow due to the weather but he put us on the fish as much as possible!

Captain Carlos went the extra mile to ensure we had the best time and successful trip. I would highly recommend this charter service.

Cap Randy pulled this monstrous terp out when it got close

This was my first fishing trip but the best experience ever. Captain Randy was so nice and answered all of our questions with no problem. We caught the biggest fish I've ever seen in real life and we were even heading out to do more. I ended up getting seasick in the ocean which really sucks cuz I wanted to stay out there and see what else we could catch. if your looking for an exceptionally awesome experience, book with these guys, you won't b disappointed.

On vacation from Chicago and had a great afternoon trip with Randy today. Had a shuttle pick us up from the hotel and drop us back off. Caught live bait and had a good time getting multiple hits, seeing the tarpon jump and even reeling 1 in. Randy was very friendly and informative. Thanks for a great experience!

Easy to find location with plenty of parking. We embarked at 1pm and returned at 5pm. The capitán, bartender and staff took such great care of everyone on the clean catamaran. The lunch was fresh and delicious and the drinks flowed the entire time. Plenty of time to snorkel and relax on the beautiful Cayo Icacos. It was perfect!

I fully understand and respect that the vessel has a no-smoking and no-vaping policy. I complied. However, the manner in which the policy was communicated was unnecessarily rude and confrontational. Professional leadership sets the tone onboard, and unfortunately that tone created an uncomfortable atmosphere from the start. At one point, I was also threatened by a crew member, which was completely disproportionate to the situation. That escalation appeared to stem from poor leadership and communication from the captain. The most disappointing moment occurred as I was disembarking the vessel when the captain said, "Can you walk straight?" implying that I was intoxicated or unstable. This comment was especially inappropriate given that I have visible scarring on my femur from a serious injury. I worked very hard to recover from that injury, and being mocked in that manner was unprofessional and disrespectful. I have always respected crew authority and vessel policies on prior charters. Rules are understandable. Disrespect and intimidation are not. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and ensures future guests are treated with courtesy, professionalism, and respect.

I found a few charters in the area and honestly it was chance that led me to select Puerto Rico Tarpon Connection. Captain Rafa responded to my emails swiftly and made me feel comfortable leading up to our trip. The night prior to our trip, I couldn't sleep a wink. I was as excited as a kid on Christmas Eve. Our trip began on a rainy morning as a Puerto Rico "Cool Front" (80 degrees) had just come through. My wife who is not as experienced in fishing accompanied us. Captain Rafa offered her his only rain jacket which meant a lot to me. We began by catching bait and Rafa immediately put us on the fish. I believe we hooked up with approximately 10-15 tarpon during the course of our 4 our trip. We landed 5 fish (approximately 20 lbs or so). When Rafa and I weren't discussing our love for fishing, he and my wife were discussing their love for good food. Our day concluded with the Captain taking us to an area where we could feed wild Tarpon in the shallows with the remaining unused bait. What an experience!!! At the conclusion of the charter, the captain sat down and had lunch with us and advised us of some amazing local must-haves. The memories of this trip will be something that will last a lifetime. I appreciated Captain Rafa's professionalism and more importantly his concern for my wife's comfort and enjoyment during the trip. I feel like we definitely made a friend in Puerto Rico and are already discussing our next trip here. My next trip may include two tarpon charters and I won't use the services of anyone else but Captain Rafa!!! Captain Rafa, your new friends Derek and Channing are looking forward to visiting with you in the near future. Until then, tight lines!!

This was THE WORST deep sea fishing trip we have ever had! If I could give them ZERO stars, I would…read morehave! We're still trying to get our money back. Everything we were told was a LIE! We specifically asked about deep sea fishing & catching fish we could keep & cook for dinner. We also asked if the boat had AC & a restroom. Elvia (the wife of Captain Omar) said yes. We would get to catch fish and their boat had a bathroom and AC. They (Captain Omar & Elvia) even convinced us to do the 6 hour fishing trip (more expensive trip) so we could catch more. The total trip for 4 people from 8am-2pm was $885. First, Elvia didn't call us to let us know that their newer boat was having engine problems so we wounl have to go on the older boat. She didn't mention this to us until my husband called her the night before to confirm our charter. We had already paid the deposit of $445 so we didn't dispute the issue with her because we were told this boat still had a bathroom & AC. We arrived at the dock (which was a different location than the original one she told us, this location was further away) & had to call her because no one was there and it was already 8am. We eventually got on the boat & started our trip. The bathroom had no running water so we couldn't wash our hands. The cabin had no AC so we were hot and nauseous. All we did for hours was trolling. We never stopped to actually fish even after my husband told Captain Omar again that we wanted to stop & catch fish, actual fishing. Then when Captain Omar said he would take us to a spot were we could fish the engine over heated & the cabin filled with smoke. He had to stop and slowly head back to port. We all had to evacuate the cabin and stay up top. We were worried it would set the boat on fire. Finally we got back to port & had to get off the boat. No fishing whatsoever. Didn't even get to touch the fishing poles! Then the Captain told us to call his wife to deal with her about the money issue. He apologized & offered another trip late that night but we already had other plans and could not reschedule. We basically just wasted 6 hours just riding on a boat and it was rough waters so that wasn't even relaxing either. When I reached out to Elvia she acted like she did not know who I was or what I was talking about & put her husband on the phone to speak with me. I asked again if they could refund our money, at least 1/2 of it since this experience was not at all what was promised and advertised. He argued with me, got defensive & wanted to speak to my husband and not me. They both basically said that they never told us they had AC & that they told us that trolling was all they do here in Puerto Rico & that the engine breaking down was not their fault. They said they would not refund the $445 deposit but would not charge us the remainder of the balance. I told them that was not acceptable & I would deal with my credit card company to get my money back. Next thing I know, there was an additional charge on our credit card for $250! They lied again! Don't use this fishing charter company! If you do, get everything in writing. Don't take their word for it. They are liars!

As…read moreI search for some coffee in the lobby of the Ritz, I remember the attentive the staff is here and simply put in my request for a brew of steaming dark wake me up coffee. I need to be ready for what's ahead. Walking out of the hotel the humidity and warmth of a San Juan morning strikes me and slows my pace up. I think "better than Boston," but the humidity will make me pay later. The coffee arrives at the same time as a cab. There is nothing better than Ritz coffee and there are many cabs a lot better than the cabs in San Juan. I've never been in a good one! 5 minutes to El Cangrejo Yacht Club and my adventure. My captain awaits and his name is Omar. The legend of the San Jose Lagoon, the man who guarantees tarpon catches and the guide who developed the sport of tarpon fishing in this reclaimed body of water that is the result of the airport construction. Off and on this lagoon can be, well let's just say, questionable in water quality but as the years have gone by it get's cleaner and clearer. The journey to the fishing grounds is a combination of catching bait (thread fin herring) and perch (for the big girls.) A ride through the downtown takes you under a bridge that requires a heads up move and out into open water. The anticipation of a frenzy makes the heart beat faster as you round each corner. A frenzy as Omar calls them is a situation where tarpon school together to feed on bait on the service which has an area of a lagoon in a lather with crashing tarpon, snook and diving birds. Today we are on our third day of fishing the early morning bite. A few jumps the first two days leads me to believe that my luck will turn as the fish are here and we change our tactics to work a ledge that the tarpon move along from the lagoon on the other side of the big bridge to the main body of water. It is the trick and the magic that years of fishing and studying tarpon makes Omar the best. While other guides are fishing the shore line to west we stick to the ledge just outside of the bridge. Fish on and I am into my first 60lb tarpon of the day on a nice fresh herring on light tackle braid. No sooner do I cool off with some iced down water (remember reference to the humidity) and we see a boil and I cast to that and ....fish on. 15 minutes later a perfect match to the first one get's released. High fives, water, more water, and another boil. Cast to it .......wait ....wait ....wait reel reel reel and the circle hook hits home. This shinning silver beauty contrasts with the murky Ritz brown coffee color of the lagoon and takes your breath away. Quick picture, release and more high fives! Lines back in, water now in my pocket, my guide shirt and hat soaked in sweat and lines back in. I can not drink the water fast enough as the excitement of the fight, the humidity and now the sun well overhead has me HOT! Just a breather please I think, but can never express to Omar as our friendship has developed into one of constant ribbing and barbs of Puerto Rican humor and Boston comebacks. Oh no.....fish on. Dear God let this stop! I reel and reel and the circle hooks catches and this fish jumps and jumps and she's a beauty of sterling silver. Do you think the fourth in one hour would give me a break and be smaller.......no no no she's pushing 100lbs. So I have Omar pour some water in my mouth over my head and back,,, and this refreshes me enough to dig in. Down and dirty we agree to see if I can pressure her fast to the boat. It works, she cooperates and we finally take a break after releasing yet another. Well, I would like to tell you the morning continued with this level of intensity but it cooled down as my body did too and we jumped 4 more fish landing two all between 40 to 80 lbs. My best tarpon morning ever. Now advice! Fish with Omar and if you can try to book morning trips and do so more than one time as you stay in San Juan. Stay in touch with Omar as the seasons for tarpon are fairly constant but he will call you when the bite is on. The rates are super fair and San Juan is such an easy inexpensive flight for me from Boston. All you need is Omar's cell number which is provided. Call Omar tell him your level of expertise and fly fish when he recommends, but most importantly listen to his advice and stories. He is the legend and my friend.

He made sure I knew where to meet, and as soon as I got there, he met with me. I can tell he does the best he can to get us where the fish are. It's called fishing, guys. Let's not forget that. My friend didn't manage well on the water, so he took him back to drop him off. He wanted to make sure we were happy and enjoying ourselves. He teaches well. If you are not comfortable or know how he's good at making you feel comfortable, be sure to follow his instructions. He knows what he is doing. Also, there's a recreational limit, so know that whatever you catch, if you hit your limit, you hit your limit, and the rest is for his taking. I gave him all my catch just because I had nowhere to cook it like I would want to, and he offered to fillet it too, but again, I had nowhere to put it. (I'm just visiting). I had a lot of fun the day was perfect. I caught four mackerel, amberjack, and a yellowtail snapper. What an unforgettable trip. muchas gracias capitán Carlos
