How have I not written a review for this IC staple?! It's dank, in the raddest way. It's a dive, in the most sublime way. The ambiance is not trying hard, but nailing it. Most importantly, the scotch is prevalent and the Guinness pours are perfection. Oh, and there's pool (and a jukebox). This spot has a special place in my heart. Walked in and didn't know what to expect. I just moved to Iowa City and we wanted to try out a couple of bars. Right away locals at the bar were so welcoming! We met two bartenders (Sean and Sean) and both were phenomenal. We played pool and darts and got to try the older Sean's blood Orange shot that he created! We stayed for hours. My favorite bar in Iowa City, with darts and a pool table! Great service! For snacks, all they have are a few types of chips for $1.

My wife and I spent three weeks in Dublin and this is the best bar outside of Ireland. It's cash only so remember to bring some cash. The Guinness is cold and the atmosphere is great. Highly recommend coming here whenever you are in Iowa City. read more

This place sucks. I ordered an Iowa beer and a shot of Jameson. Shot was great, obviously, but the beer was skunky. I drink beer regularly, and I live in Des Moines, so I drink Iowa beer all the time. Brought it to the bartender's attention, and was told I'd have to pay for another beer. I don't mind paying for a beer that I just don't like, but if it's skunk, the bar always swaps it out, no questions asked. They wouldn't do it. Then, a fat, old douchebag who identified himself as Bill Burr to me took a sip and pronounced that the beer was "delicious", and accused me of running a scam. I pointed out that I hadn't drunk the beer other than the first taste, and was told that I must not like Iowa beer. I've found Iowans to be super nice, but I've never been treated this poorly in any bar, anywhere, and I travel the entire country yearly. read more

Even though on the surface it's just another IC downtown bar, I always had a soft spot for this one, just cuz it was more well-lit and didn't seem as dirty/grungy as some of the other downtown bars. Usual beer/drink selection, has a pool table. Also doesn't seem as loud as the other bars. read more

It was an interesting experience here. I felt like I was in someone's dad's basement but I liked it. It was my birthday and I was bar hopping so I got Irish car bombs and bailed but I would definitely come back sometime in the future. An Iowa City classic -- well, at least it's one of my Iowa City classics. On the weeknights it's chill enough for a drink, a smoke, and a chat. On the weekends it is lively enough to keep your attention. Watch out for the decks of cards on the tables. They will steal your evening from you. Also, watch out for some of the creepy old men who sit at the end of the bar. It's a sport for them to talk to as many young ladies as possible. But on the whole they are pretty harmless. read more

I like this place. It has good beer selections and it's underground which is really cool because Bing Underground is really cool. The bathrooms are nice, it's old-school carpeted with a pool table on a different level in the back. Kind of small but definitely rad. You want a small bar, where you can hear your self think, with actual adults talking and conversing with chatty friendly bartenders then look no further, Dublin underground is your spot! Expect no fancy setup, no creative drinks, no nansy pansy sugary libations, no food ( well they used to have chips and cheese sticks!) but real booze, never watered down and a whole lot of character!! My favorite bar! Hands down. I like this place so much I work there. On days when I'm not required to be there, I go there anyways. I'm not kidding. Let me be straight with you, it's not quite a dive and not quite a hipster bar, although, we get both types in the underground. Some might call it a towny bar, but, personally, I know it to be a pub. Dublin Underground is accepting to all people and a chill hang. There's a pool table, a dart board, a Megatouch, board games, Shake-a-day, tons of unique junk on the walls and of course beverages a plenty. The Irish whiskey selection is nice and very well priced for the Iowa City area. My favorite thing about Dublin? The people. I love Dublin Underground. It's a nice change of pace from the sticky floors and general madness of a lot of the bars on the Ped Mall. It's unpretentious, has outlets where you can charge your phone, and booths where you can actually have a conversation. Pro-Tips: -They have cool decorations, one of which is a mini-sail fish. HERE'S THE TIP: NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU LIKE THE LITTLE SAILFISH, DON'T TRY TO BUY A SIMILAR ONE OFF AMAZON ON YOUR PHONE WHILE STILL AT DUBLIN AND TOTALLY HAMMERED, because you'll end up with an $85 dollar piece of metal "wall-art" that isn't at all like the adorable little sail fish. - THEY HAVE CHIPS. - Jessica the bartender is great. - The scientific name for the sucker fish in the tank is "plecostomus." - The big fish in the tank is great at posing for selfies with you. read more

A hidden gem. I've been here 8 years and went for the first time a year ago and I feel like I've been living in a cave. Very friendly bartenders who are always willing to chat. A Downtown Iowa City mainstay. If you are going out carousing (or just rousing), the Dublin Underground needs to be on the list of stops. This bar is held in the same tradition of Irish Pubs where you can talk, read a book, play some pool or throw some darts, just stay away from politics and we'll all get along fine. Several Irish whiskeys are available as well as some wonderful drafts. Every object on the wall, on a shelf, or in a tank has a story behind it and the locals will let you know about most of them. I realize that the Dublin is a bit of an Iowa City institution, but I have an issue with any Irish bar - or any bar for that matter - that thinks it's okay to sell something called an Irish Car Bomb. Obviously, this drink wasn't invented at the Dublin, so I'm not blaming them for that. But seriously: How would you like a Twin Towers Inferno? Or a Newtown Massacre? Poor taste? Well, as someone who grew up surrounded by The Troubles, by actual car bombs going off and blowing up little children outside our schools, I don't really see the funny side of this Car Bomb. I'm surprised that anyone running an Irish pub would think it's appropriate either. But whatever...the Dublin is very popular, serves a standard range of standard Irish-American pub drinks, and I'm sure that most of the folks who drink here don't give two hoots about some stupid mixed drink. (That said, I would like to cordially invite any one of these folks to fly to Ireland and try to order a Car Bomb. Good luck with that.) I don't really mind the Dublin so much, it's nothing special really, but in protest of this crass and offensive drinks marketing, I'm giving it one star. read more
