I just randomly stopped in here while driving through to Huntsville. I have a craving for a donut and I might have stopped at one of the best bakery's in the state of Alabama. I just purchased some glazed donuts and some donut holes. These things are addictive so don't buy more than what your stomach can handle. The donut holes just melted in your mouth on contact. We arrived at 11:30 hoping to enjoy the Duchess... for some unexplained reason they were completely sold out!?!

I had high hopes for these baked goods because of the reviews. Not sure if it's because I had other local bakeries before this one but it wasn't my favorite. The cookies were hard and crispy but looked bendable and gooey and I prefer the latter. Definitely wouldn't get those again. Was really excited about the cinnamon glazed twist and it was too cakey for me. Was hoping it had the texture of the glazed donuts. We came mid morning so a lot of items were already sold out. Not sure I'd stop here again but if I did I'd likely just got the standard glazed donut. My husband liked the chocolate one the best but also felt like we would try something else next time. read more

First words of advice... call in an order first thing to guarantee you get the goods, or make sure you get here well before noon as they sell out fast!!! I had to go back the Bill Smith to have a hitch put on so the wife called in the order. We had been here once before but all doughnuts were sold out. As you see the wife went a little bit overboard as there is only 3 in out house hold lol.. so we got to share these with a neighbor that had 5 in their family lol. You can run into a line or some days when when it gets busy they'll have a limited selection but that's with any small bakery really. If you want the good stuff get up there early! We went to the Cullman Museum and were told, "Don't leave town without going to Duchess!" Well, ok then! Unfortunately we waited until right before we left town so by the time we got there, they were sold out! Fortunately, my husband had to go back to Cullman 2 weeks later so I called ahead and ordered donuts for him to pick up. Those donuts are no joke! Wow! Just the appearance of them makes your mouth water. We got the ones with jelly, some glazed ones, and chocolate iced ones. All of them are delicious. Interestingly, the jelly ones have the jelly on top instead of in the middle. This is so much better than inside the donut. Less mess and makes it easy to see which one is which. We got apple, strawberry, cherry, and blueberry to try. So far, the apple is my favorite. The chocolate iced was really good too. The kid liked that one and the glazed ones. Hubby liked all the jelly ones. I'm only sad that this is a good hour from us. Not sure when we will be in the area again but if we ever are, we will definitely stop by for some donuts! read more

It's kind of hard to come on here and say bad things about a place that everyone else brags about but that is what I am sadly going to do I was referred to this place from a friend who told me how GREAT these donuts were. I, being a donut fiend was eager to see what the craziness was all about. Before I begin, I will say that my friend only gets the glaze donuts. I am a jelly fan and that is what I went in to try So, I was there about 8:30 in the AM. They had a very small display case of pastries, donuts, cookies etc. They had about 5 or 6 jelly donuts or I guess what they consider to be jelly donuts. They weren't filled, they kind of had a small dollop of jelly on the top which looked strange but whatever, I was in a jelly donut mood. I told the older lady behind the counter that it was my first time being there. She started to explain why their donuts are so much better and how everything is fresh blah, blah, blah. I don't need the life story of the business just bag me up some donuts!! They have a blackboard hanging behind the case which is very visible from the front of the donut case. The blackboard clearly said, "Jelly donuts 1/2 dozen for $7.99". I thought, let's do it. I got 2 lemon, 2 blueberry & 2 strawberry. She boxed them up and I paid. When I looked at the receipt, it showed 2 lemon, 2 blueberry and 2 strawberry separate and the total was $8.70. I asked why it was $8.70 and not the $7.99 price stated on their own blackboard. She said, the $7.99 price is if THEY PICK THE DONUTS FOR YOU!! WHAT?????? If I want to pick my own donuts, they cost $2.90 each. If I let them pick the donuts, I can get the $7.99 price. I have NEVER heard of anything so ridiculous in my life. So, the customer doesn't get to pick what they want the employees get to do? I didn't make a scene as there were other people in the place but I'm sure they person behind the counter could tell I wasn't happy. I've honestly never heard of a business doing this. AND after all of that, the donuts were not all that great. Not much jelly and it gets messy since it's just dolloped on the top. I had one later in the day and they already had an "old" flavor to them. Very disappointing. I talked to my friend a day later and told him about what happened. He said he never saw that sign because he always gets glazed, but he couldn't believe it. I told him about a place called Daylight Donuts about 2 miles down the road. The donuts there are ALWAYS light and airy. You can eat one 3 days later, and it still taste like it just came out of the kitchen. They will also fill the donut with as much filling as you want, and it doesn't cost extra. And get this part - - YOU can pick the type of donuts YOU want for the same price. I shall not be back to this business. Those of you who are ok settling for mediocre, have at it! read more

They were Royal places. The Duchess Bakery is a throw back in time in America when the pace of life and the problems of the world seemed much simpler. Given the size of the town and that it was the middle of the week the choices were limited. However, what was in the cases, were delicious. I imagine that this place has made the majority of wedding and birthday cakes in Culman, Alabama for decades. These small town home baked goods really impressed me. Its got a Germany kind of decoration theme going on. About 8:30 am we pulled up it was a good sign that people were almost lined up put the door already. I should've tried the cookies or cakes for sale, but this time our mission was specifically for breakfast on the go. We didn't have to wait very long. The workers were good at what they do. We got a little bit of a selection of the filled donuts. They were fresh and melted in my mouth. I enjoyed the lightness of them like not being too dense. I usually am not a huge fan of the ones with the jelly or what not in the center. But I had a cherry and a strawberry dolloped with regular glaze and I was pleasantly surprised. They did taste like they were homemade fresh not too long before I enjoyed it. Quite flavorful, but not completely overwhelming. Plenty to taste and enjoy, but not so much to make a mess. I think if I were to change one thing it would be to have a bit more room. Maybe a table or two to sit and enjoy. but overall if I find myself in this area again. I tell you what, Krispy Kreme ain't got nothin' on Duchess's hot doughnuts! I love, love, LUV this little bakery. It closed down for a while a few years ago, which depressed everyone in the whole town of Cullman. But, prayers were answered, and this little gem reopened. You will not, I repeat, will not get bad sweets here (as if there was such a thing!) Great doughnuts, cookies, pies, bismarcks, cupcakes....great everything. I even have to stop here after going to the dentist, just because. It is a staple here, and darn well should be. *It must be noted that they have not subscribed to the notion that the icing portion of the cupcake should be larger than the cake portion. Their freshly-iced cupcakes have a thin swipe of icing on top that actually accentuates the baked good rather than overpowers it. And only $.70 each! Take that, $3 cupcake!!! read more

This place makes fresh donuts every morning, but if you don't get there on time, then you get no donuts. And by on time, I'm talking about getting there before 8:00 am. They sell out of donuts quickly because they are so freaking fabulous. I'm not a huge donut eater, but I could eat these donuts the same way that Homer ate the Donuts when he was sent to hell for the evening for eating the rest of the "forbidden donut" in the Halloween special from Season 8 or 9 of The Simpsons. You know, the one where Flanders is Satan and Marge gets the Jury of the Damned to proclaim Homer is innocent because he had already signed his soul away to Marge when he ate the wedding cake before the wedding. I have always loved this bakery. Since it was purchased by the new owner, the inside is visually pleasing & the customer service seemed as though it had improved. However, after driving 25 minutes because I promised my 5-year-old we would go, they were completely out of doughnuts 2 hours prior to their closing time. I then watched as 6 more people walked in & immediately walked out empty-handed & disappointed. I don't understand spending 2 hours repeatedly apologizing to customers. I know bakeries don't want a lot of leftovers, but why not discount them at the end of the day? They would still come out ahead or, at the very least, break even & have satisfied customers. read more
