I have always loved this bakery. Since it was purchased by the new owner, the inside is visually pleasing & the customer service seemed as though it had improved. However, after driving 25 minutes because I promised my 5-year-old we would go, they were completely out of doughnuts 2 hours prior to their closing time. I then watched as 6 more people walked in & immediately walked out empty-handed & disappointed. I don't understand spending 2 hours repeatedly apologizing to customers. I know bakeries don't want a lot of leftovers, but why not discount them at the end of the day? They would still come out ahead or, at the very least, break even & have satisfied customers. read more

It's hard to rate Duchess now. When things are stocked it is delicious. There is an issue with availability that must be accounted for when reviewing any business. That is one star. But 5 stars when you score your favorites. I grew up with them. Birthday cakes and every occasion in between. In the last three years I can think of two successful trips because they are consistently sold out of our favorites and they stopped making cakes with the white cake they were known for since the beginning. They try to run the place on their signature glazed donut. Those are terrific if you get them fresh. But man, give us some variety that is stocked. Good luck if you want chocolate donuts or the chocolate bismark. Camp out like Black Friday because if you don't get them early they don't bake more. I've been there at 9 am before and they are sold out. They always say "someone was in here earlier and cleaned us out." Yeah we've done that before too because we may have to go 18 months before we see another chocolate donut. And when you keep getting burned you tend to stop going by. I know we aren't the only ones running into this. I've held the door open numerous times for other customers on their way out empty handed. You'll grow your business if you become reliable. It's like they are allergic to money. We were told to place a special order, but these are treats we want on a whim. And we are more apt to spend more when we are out and about instead of planning ahead for a donut craving. Bring back the white cake. It's not "dry" if it's fresh. When we are told you switched because yellow is more moist it just seems suspect that it's more convenient to carry over another day or more. I really miss the old Duchess. Grateful it's still there, but for those of us who were in it for more than the glazed, it's just a shell of its former self. read more

Duchess doughnuts are THE BEST you will ever eat! I am a teacher and try to take these to my own children's teachers as often as possible, as I know personally what a sweet surprise it is to start your day with one of these from a student! Get there pretty early. They do sometimes run out. They are THAT GOOD. read more

All I can say is be sure to bring cash because you will be sorely disappointed if you go and can't buy any of the fantastic bakery items. The best chocolate pies , cookies and doughnuts in all of Alabama. We made a pit stop driving through from Nashville and fortunately parked right in front of the bakery while going to another store. We stopped in to get a cookies and found the freshest best tasting sweets we have had in a long time. read more

I worked at the local new station, "Channel 2", one block over through high school and a year after until my husband returned home from deployment. (2006-2011) Dutchess is one block over. Small local bakery in Cullman. All of my co-workers have professed their love for Duchess for years. Working in town last week so I stopped by and grabbed a dozen for my wife and kids to try. My wife and son would fight you for a hot n ready so naturally I assumed they would like these. The dozen was $7.00 even. They're served in a thick waxy feeling sack. Though they were not hot n ready when they arrived I was told they were soft and delicious. The next day they were equally soft and I was told if you zap them in the microwave for 5-10 seconds is as if you got them fresh. They seem to hold up/ last longer with out becoming stale maybe it's the bag. The service inside the bakery was friendly. The bakery has a number of offerings synonymous with a traditional bakery. Im told I will be returning next time I'm in town. The signage is limited, you'll drive right past it if you're not paying close attention. I did. Twice! read more

Duchess is the Best around. I have been getting donuts and bismarks from there since I was a little girl. The bismarks have two kinds of filling, one is pudding like and the other is heavenly creamy and add a little chocolate icing to the top and anyone would die for their bismarks!!!! The best doughnuts I have ever tasted in the town of Cullman! I was looking for a great doughnut and I'm not from Alabama so when someone had asked if I liked Duchess I told her I never had it. She freaked and said if I want a great doughnut then I need to go to Duchess. Not being from around here I didn't know where it was.
