I was in the adolescent idp/ iop program in late 2019 before discharging to adult outpatient Como location a crossed the street. Honestly the staff was amazing and truly cared about their clients and their recovery success, but towards the end of my treatment I ran into issues. They had approved for me to miss programming a few times for school activities that were really important to me being a senior in high school, but then one day when I called in that I wouldn't be at treatment because I had a fever and stayed home from school that day, they told me I was kicked out of the program with absolutely no previous warnings whatsoever and without giving any information to my therapist, the management team made her call to tell me I was kicked out!- like if she has to share the news she should be in the loop as to what's going on as she knew me best out of all of the treatment team!! After complaining they finally allowed me to stay in the program only if I came to programming that day with a FEVER! This is especially unacceptable because the residential program is located in the same building and I could easily infect those clients who are medically especially at high health risk!! In addition, towards the end of my time my dietician made some snarky comments to me when I was struggling to finish a meal and it is also very suspicious as to why the turnover rate with staff is so high at this location! Like staff is constantly changing that at my time there in intensive programming I had 3 different therapists! It was really hard to truly dive deep into the root of my Ed having to constantly start from fresh in therapy. Also during the end of my time there a lot of the therapeutic activities such as art and yoga were taken away for no good reasons! Lastly, this program is tailored to early teens and is really not fitting for the more mature older population that the adolescent facility serves (15-18yrs). Although my experience in the adolescent program was not great, since being in the outpatient program at the Adult Como location I have had an AMAZING experience and truly made huge strives in my recovery!! My treatment team has been amazing at communicating between each other which has ultimately aided so much in my recovery success! The teams and people I have interacted with at the adult program are very experienced, well informed and truly know what they are doing!! As much as I had issues with some parts of the Emily Program, they truly are an amazing company and a leader for research and treatment in the nation! Minnesota is so lucky to have them based here, and since their recent partnership with Veritas Collaborative they are only going to grow and continue to provide exceptional care! read more

It's terrible the residential is just dirty I was a patient and I noticed how disgusting the kitchen was and I decided to atleast clean some of it even tho it's not my job and I do not work there. the medical staff is also terrible at timing and giving you you're medicine and even if you have a set time that you need to they force you to work on their time only. Many of the staff is terrible as well they don't do it with care but just for the love of money I don't recommend this location at all. It's a disgusting pig pen the rooms are not clean either I found toenail clippings all over the floor and rat poop in a cubby as well as they don't clean any space the "burrow" is space in the adult unit and it is messy under the couch you can find a very dirty health risking dust and dirt a "BHT" told me they have never moved the couch to clean. I was baffled. As well as the room I was staying in had a light issue and I did not have a light my whole time there it felt inhumane and just unfair even though I brought up the issue multiple time. DON'T SEND YOUR KID HERE. I went here and staffs were always mean to the kids and were always on there phones or vaping or on tinder. They didn't even care about the patients there it was obvious they were only in it for the money. Some staff, yes you Ash talked like robots "How do we feel" "How can i help" When i was having a breakdown in the dinning room she just sat there breathing down my face. And the therapist there were horrible Sarah yes you. She always called me and other kids in her office for "whispering" like yes we whispered I'm sorry for not wanting grown adults sitting next to me all day and peeking into our conversations. Honestly this placed seems more like a prison then a residential i learned more how to hide stuff from adults then recover from my ED. And don't even get me started on Ash again, during room checks one of my friends told me how she stayed outside his door just standing there breathing heavily, she even tried it on me and my roommate once but yeah i heard you cause of all your keychains dangling off your damn purse honestly what a weirdo seems like staff had a thing out for kids more than helping them. And Adam i didn't forget you don't worry, you were always so weird around the girls there like during bathroom checks looking into the toilets for like a minute straight or during laundry staring at the girls underwear honestly i hope you get fired and never brought near a minor again. And Joyle i hope you never ruin a kid there again honestly whenever me and my friends talked she always came up sat down right next to us "so what are we talking about" like yeah just so you know we were talking about you, she was always on her phone or just mean mugging staring at kids. One time during Lunch we were eating sandwiches and our nice table support gave us napkins and Joyle just got up from her table and snatches our napkins throwing them away saying "We aren't supposed to have napkins at the table" you could've said that before snatching it out our hands, and sorry for not wanting our hands to be dirty should've just ate like an animal since i guess that's what they want us to do there. I went there for a second time and all the groups repeated it felt like a stimulation they said the exact same thing the same routine on meals and snacks i was so bored some days it felt like my head would explode. Some meals we would have again and again for weeks one time we even got chicken breast that were just all fat and they peer pressured us into eating it. A lot of kids got stomach problems after that. They also made us hold our pee in for so long one girl even got a infection. Just don't send your kids here. read more

This review is for the AWH St. Paul adult residential location. I was not treated with dignity or respect while a patient at AWH in 2024. Looking back, I see effort from some staff and a glaringly obvious disrespect from others (largely poorly and undertrained BHTs). I almost died from AN, and they sent me home with no transition of care and without notice. Staff were not truthful why they discharged me which made me feel worthless, to this day. Why wasn't I worth being told honestly? That hurts. Said it was my dog, but my records I requested indicate it was due to undiagnosed autism. I couldn't get "along" in a community like AWH, the notes explained. I was at the peak of my anorexia and they threw me out like trash, because I'm different. But blamed my dog so it was easy for them to get away with (my ESA while there). And as a side note, terrible care of the AWH facility. Had multiple issues with mold, laundry facilities, and dust. Just overall an ick experience that contributed to my diagnosis of c-PTSD. Now I'm doing trauma work to try to heal from being at the AWH. I also got a related tattoo to try to heal from some of the anguish. And yes, I still have anorexia, so thanks AWH for not only giving me trauma but also leaving me to rot with a deadly illness! What a joke. They don't provide group the therapy they advertise, instead they make clients sit around and give an immense amount of leisure time (for example, they end group therapy half an hour early yet don't allow clients to spend alone time in their rooms). They were unable to provide adequate meals due to issues related to ordering bulk food. There is a big lack of communication between clients and therapists, with teams often forgetting to relay information or check in with clients. While the program advertises consistent therapy and check ins with clients, the therapists and dietitians often do not pull clients for appointments even once a week. If you're looking to get stuffed with sub par meals that consist primarily of sugar and lack protein and energy without the consistent support of a treatment team to address the root causes of your eating disorder, this place is for you. But stay away if you want an actual therapeutic program with licensed professionals who are able to meet for more than an hour a week to help you work through your issues! The only good part is the BHT staff who are usually right out of undergrad school and trying their absolute best with very little support from leadership or more experienced professionals who are licensed to treat and provide therapy to clients. read more

The Emily Program in-patient/Anna Westin House has been a God-send for our family. My daughter just completed a 6 week stay and she now has light in her eyes again. She is a different kid in a BEAUTIFUL way! When I read the reviews on this site, I was terrified to send her - yet it was one of the best decisions I have made as a parent. Her therapist, nurse, and dietician were beautiful souls who were supportive and got us through one of the toughtest seasons of our lives. TEP is life saving! They seem more focused on financial gains than helping people. I reached out for help, they had me go through an assessment and other hoops, just to tell me there a few week wait. Waited a few weeks, then was informed it was a 4 week wait. I was not a priority and kept getting pushed further down their list. It's hurtful to ask for help then be treated badly. read more

My child was there for Bulimia but her dietitian was treating her for AN. They require the clients to eat obscene quantities of food. There were a couple of people that treated her with respect but MANY that didn't. We sent her there with obvious problems but she came home to us with MORE! read more

I began at the Emily Program (TEP) as an adolescent in 2002 in the St. Paul location. My therapist, Kandee Kubat, planted false memories of child sexual abuse in my head. These false memories destroyed my family. TEP also had a philosophy at that time that all work happens in outpatient. Under their old model I was allowed to get very sick & medically unstable. I was binging and purging 10 times a day, running 7 miles a day, throwing up blood, had electrolyte imbalances, & was passing out at school. TEP did not refer me to Methodist (now Melrose) for medical intervention. This significantly prolonged my struggle because I chronically remained at a much lower level of care than I needed. Back then TEP didn't have higher levels of care but they would also not refer willingly to Methodist. In 2004 I was kicked out of my school & told I couldn't come back until I received treatment. It wasn't TEP that stepped in saying I needed more care, it was my university. I went to the Anna Westin House (then owned by Melrose) & did an IOP at TEP St. Louis Park in 2005. It was led by Doug Perry & it was a strong program. I relapsed again in 2007. I went to another treatment center where more false memories were planted. Kandee was very supportive of the facility and the memories I was "uncovering." I returned to TEP in 2010 & did a day program. Despite the poor individual therapy I was getting from Kandee, I found TEP day program helpful. In 2017 my team was getting ready to have me court ordered to treatment. It was decided by my team that my ED was too severe for TEP. My doctor, Dr. Jennifer Gaudiani, suggested the only centers in the USA for a case as severe as mine would be Monte Nido or Eating Recovery Center of Denver. I went to ERC for 4 months in 2017 & it saved my life. I went back to TEP St. Paul IOP the summer of 2017. There was not one clinician in the program that had a license. Most were fresh out of college. Groups consisted of coloring, playing games, writing letters by trees, & art projects. At meals many ED behaviors were overlooked & they would have us do weird experiments like eating with our eyes closed. It was irresponsible of TEP to let so many inexperienced clinicians run such a high level of care. I actually found the program very stressful & quit after 2 weeks. With a name like TEP you expect specialized care & this wasn't it. In October of '17 I went to ERC again for 2 weeks. When I returned my psychiatrist at TEP informed me she would have to drop my care by 1/1/18. I was receiving Ketamine infusions at ERC & I was coming home to be starting TMS. It was infuriating knowing how long I had to struggle as an adolescent without access to higher levels of care at TEP, & now all of a sudden TEP did a complete flip flop. The "thoughtful community referral process" (as quoted by Jillian Lampert) was a list of providers who didn't specialize in EDs & the one who did was an hour away & didn't take insurance. The "new clinical model" in a nutshell, is when TEP ripped hundreds of patients away from outpatient providers to make more money off of higher level of care services. Management decided if you hadn't completed a higher level of care at TEP within the past 6 months, then you must not have an ED anymore. TEP reported to the Star Tribune only 100 MN patients were dropped, but my psychiatrist alone had to drop her caseload of 200. My guess is they dropped at minimum 1,000 people. Patients at TEP were only given 4-6 weeks notice to find new providers & TEP announced this change at the end of insurance open enrollment. The way TEP treated their staff by making them drop caseloads of struggling patients was also very cruel. I wrote Dirk Miller & Deb Schermann a letter to try to get my care back at TEP & requested a meeting. I wasn't able to be squeezed into Dirk's schedule for over a month. I realized they weren't listening to patient concerns seriously if a month was the best they could do. I began contacting local media outlets, filed complaints with several boards, & contacted my elected officials. All of these things were things that were incredibly stressful & time consuming. Fighting to get my care back at TEP completely distracted me from fighting for my recovery. I ultimately relapsed & ended up back at Melrose. Other than the psychiatrist I had to fight to keep, I won't be using any of TEP services in the future. The inexperienced staff, rogue therapists, ethics of dropping 100s... that was enough for me. I urge parents sending children to TEP to please be involved in your child's therapy. The level of incompetence here is dangerous. read more

Did residential treatment once a couple years ago these people had an unethical approach. One girl I knew had her AirPods stolen. Needed treatment recently and they charged me for a zoom call, billing manger was super rude when I had questions about the bill. unprofessional, only in it for the money, forced residential treatment on me when i wasn't in need of it, when i went for my residential evaluation there were 2 girls crying to their parents in the lobby about how they had been, and i quote "suffering for days". the lunch they gave me looked like a lunch i would of received in preschool it consisted of a frozen uncrustable sandwich with strawberry apple sauce and a cheese stick. when we took a tour it felt like a military school with a lot of toxic positivity and it was severely dirty/unclean. wouldn't recommend this place, go anywhere but the emily program. u couldn't pay me to receive treatment here again. read more

I lasted less than a week in intensive outpatient (IOP) at the Como facility in 2022. I felt that everyone who worked there was disingenuous; every therapist and dietician came across as fake to me. I entered as an adult with orthorexia, but was lumped in with college-aged adults, who the employees connected with more because they were the same generation. I hated mealtimes. The food was terrible, as in poorly cooked and the flavor was awful. Just because I have an ED, doesn't mean I don't know how to cook or make my food taste good. The entire time was navel gazing and focusing purely on food and our hunger cues. It was a huge contrast to all of the signs everywhere that reminded us that we are more than our eating disorders. When I was in that facility, I was only my eating disorder. Nothing more. I had been making some strides in recovery while on the waitlist, but the experience in that facility was so triggering that I fell back into harsher ED habits and doubled down on what I deemed healthy foods. To add insult to injury, even though I have an excellent insurance plan, I owed them $500 for 3.5 days. I can only imagine how much out of pocket I would have had to pay for the full 6 weeks! The next week, I connected with a registered dietician who specializes in eating disorders and intuitive eating, started meeting every week with her and my therapist, and we devised a plan that has worked for me because it was actually tailored to me, the whole person. If an adult with adult responsibilities comes to me with an ED, I know who I will recommend, and it is not Emily Program. read more

I completed three months of intensive treatment several years ago (Residential + IDP) and it absolutely saved my life. After less successful rounds of inpatient treatment at various facilities, The Emily Program's holistic approach to healing was what really gave me the tools and support to lead an ED-free life. I was very fortunate that I was on state insurance at the time so it covered most of the cost of treatment. It is wonderful to have resources in Minneapolis. This is one option vs Melrose. My daughter attended 6 weeks outpatient after 2 weeks at Children's. They were best at reinforcing them to eat at planned meals. Be prepared to provide most of those meals. Be prepared to question therapy to make sure they have the right therapist with your child. They were very strong with refeedjng but therapy principles they were not. My advice, tour this facility and Melrose before making a decision. read more

These "company style" treatment centers are nothing but corporate machines producing repeat customers. If you have an eating disorder, I would recommend a private dietician and therapist. Find someone you can rely on that listens to you as an individual. These big places treat every case the same. Every person has to go through the same process no matter what their individual needs are. A lot of damage is done by exposure to issues that you dont even have. I found their staff to be extremely unprepared for the job with little to no experience. The turn around rate is very high, so the staff changes and you cant build any trust. The different levels of care have NO communication. So every time you change levels, you completely start from scratch. There is NO follow through from one level to the next, and therapist lie to you just to tell you what you want to hear. (lack of experience). This place was a nightmare. read more
