Actually, let me rephrase that...Latimers used to be a small family run fish business where you could only buy what was caught the night before but now it has expanded and you can buy a whole array of fish. Fishing just off the coast still takes place though - so don't be disheartened. You can ask which fish has been caught locally. Apart from the really friendly staff, who are extremely knowledgeable about all of their fish (including how to cook it, what would taste nice with it etc) the shop and cafe is laid out in a welcoming way. You can either buy your fish from the counter to take away or sit in and try one of their delicious platters....Look at my photo of the crab platter (which was 14 pound!!!). It was incredible. This place is an absolute must for all fish lovers.

We chose two fish dishes, as that's what the Marine is known for, sadly no seafood burger on the menu this time. We went for the spiced hake in a ginger and coconut sauce, and the lemon sole with prawns, and lemon and parsley butter. No significant vegetables to speak off with them, so we ordered two side orders (bane of my life!) of mixed leaves and chips. The small bowl of leaves with a little bottle of dressing, was not worth the £2.95 extra, the chips did pep up both dishes though. As for the main dishes, the hake's gentle flavour was swamped by the spiciness of the ample sauce it came in, a shame. The lemon sole lacked any real flavour too and much of the sauce it needed to give it flavour. So disappointed, both dishes weren't cheap either. Maybe we caught it on an off day, or maybe it was the choice of dishes, either way we won't be rushing back. I thought this visit would increase the Marine to a solid 5, but sadly its gone down to a 3, mainly only because of the wonderfulness of the Seafood Burger, on our previous visit.

Being vegan, it can sometimes be awkward to find places that will cater for my dietary requirements, especially around the holidays, but I'd heard good things about Signals so I contacted them and they were more than happy to provide vegan alternatives for me. They sent me an email with various different options so I could choose (unlike other places that will just provide one vegan dish) and the whole table-booking process was made easy, I could even pay the table deposit over the phone. The Christmas menu had four courses (starter, main, dessert and coffees with mince pies) and cost £25. A deposit of £10 per person was required. Each course had four different choices, although there was only one vegetarian option for a main course - Goat's cheese, mushroom and leek pie. The vegan dish they made for me was a mushroom and vegetable pie with a creamy tofu sauce. When we arrived the place was empty! But we had chosen to have a fairly early meal on a Sunday evening. However we were glad that we'd chosen to go at that time as, when we were coming to the end of our meal, lots of very loud people started steadily arriving to go upstairs for cocktails. All the drunken shouting, singing and walking in-and-out of the main door wasn't something we'd expected at all. I felt sorry for the diners who were still just starting their meals with all that noise going on. This is the only reason I haven't given Signals five stars. Onto the food! Each course was presented so nicely that it really did make it feel like a special meal. And Signals had laid out Christmas crackers for people so it felt very Christmassy. The food arrived in good time (courses arrived shortly after we said we were ready for them; there was no unnecessary waiting time) and the food was always steaming hot. My vegan portions seemed massive compared to everyone else's meals (I'm not complaining though!) and we left feeling more than comfortably full. It all tasted wonderful, I don't have anything bad to say about the food at all, and my dining companion said her food was lovely as well. The service was friendly and not over-bearing but available when we needed them, The drinks were reasonably priced and I definitely think the meal was worth what we paid for it. I'm definitely planning to go back; I like supporting local businesses but I also want to support places that cater really well for different dietary needs. It is important to keep this in mind when going to The Star Inn the Harbour- it is a seaside restaurant catering to tourists who want a quick bite of fish and chips, but it also has a reputation at stake. We went for the fish and chips- although my husband doesn't like fried fish so he got the grilled fish of the day which was Hike and it was fabulous- perfectly cooked and presented (see the photo). We shared an order of Mashed Peas which were perfectly seasoned. I got the fish and chips and it was delicious- served with malt vinegar and tartar sauce. I wouldn't get it on a regular basis- too heavy for me- but being on vacation in England, I had to try it at least once and this is the place to try it!!

A welcoming friendly service, but that`s all of it. OK, the oysters were fresh, but what can you do wrong on oysters? The brill wallowed on a completely off-tasting brown sauce, which seems to be a undiluted 1:1 mixture of soy sauce and vinegar in which worm-like soaky noodles were paddling (looks a bit like fried bosse intestine in China). Yellow tuna (a member on the red list of Greenpeace; that much to local fish!) finished with anchovis, olives and pickled mini cobs, ruining the original taste of the fish completely. And for what reason "Maris Piper" is highlighted as their potato variety of choice: its the most common grown ordinary mass variety in the UK but also one of the most susceptible potato varieties to being eaten by slugs. What`s positive: after complaining, they did not charge for the fish anymore! Well done, but no second chance!

It is still very much a restaurant with a chippy on the side (the chippy is also genuinely awesome), but snick past the chippy to the right, up the stairs, and you're in for a proper seafood treat. We were staying in Whitby, but after a Christening in York, we didn't know if we were going to be able to get up because of the sheer amount of snow the moors had had- so we didn't book- but were able to grab a table on chance. The setting is gorgeous, the tables are lovely, and the crockery is so lovely too (some of it made by a local artist- they even took the time to write down a list of suppliers for me). We had Thai fishcakes with chilli jam Mackerel with grapefruit apple and the most gorgeous peanut satay Scallops (perfectly cooked, of course), poached egg, caviar Sea trout "with textures of butternut squash" and toasted seeds Seafood linguine Poached autumnal fruits with ice cream Pear and salted caramel bread and butter pudding with hazelnut anglaise. Best food, best service, best setting, so full. All of that washed down with red wine, and seriously fresh, and stupidly reasonably priced. Lets just say the coastal road was blocked on the way home, and we skidded on the non-gritted ice having to go the other way- it would have been the most epic final meal ever. If you don't go here, you're daft.
