Brian and Dave have been great on Saturday mornings. But my wife, son and I have left Wednesday classes with Joe with tears and frustration. My son turns six on in a couple months and simply cannot do what is expected of him and cannot keep up with eight and nine year old white belts. We enrolled him knowing he lacked not only focus and confidence, but is behind his5-year-old peers with balance and coordination. While Mr. Brian breaks down the forms and works on each part, Mr. Joe ends each class with the expectation that students at least have a working understanding of the entire form. White belts are separated, but my son was in groups with older white belts. Anna - who has been incredible - has worked with my son one-on-one on Saturdays, but he falls woefully behind in classes lead by Mr. Joe. We understand my kid needs to show more focus at taekwondo, in school and at home. That's why we bring him. But Mr. Joe telling him recently that his focus is why he has 20+ stripes but does not have a black stripe, simply isn't true and was a major blow to his confidence. My son admittedly gets frustrated too easily and gives up. He was in taekwondo to work on that. Instead, it has been reinforced at Hwangs.

I wanted to find a studio which focuses on fundamentals and safety. I attended several gyms in my search and what I found were large class sizes and almost no time with the instructor. I actually re-injured my back while my partner and I were trying to figure out the technique on our own. During my first class at Solid Base my experience was exactly the opposite. I had direct exposure to the instructor during the entire session. What separates this studio from many others is that ALL classes are taught by a BJJ Black belt. In my experience you typically have to pay for individual sessions to have exposure to a black belt, while one of their students host the class. Not to mention that few people have the BJJ resume that Ricardo has (Abu Dhabi world Pro Jiu Jitsu championship COME ON!). It is rare to have a player of that level in your backyard. To be honest I would pay double for what I am getting at the gym. I would encourage anyone to come down to the gym and get a feel for the sport. It is addicting....be warned! I was told that the only way I could use my credit card to pay was to sign up for recurring billing. I was coerced into taking this option as I had no other choice. My granddaughter was not interested in continuing after the first session and, apparently I was a few days late in asking to cancel the charges for the next session. They would not and will not refund my money. I am paying for a service that I am not receiving. This is deceptive practice and certainly not a good community partnership !! BEWARE !!

Everyone from beginner to the very experienced at this place is very helpful and very friendly. They understand being new is hard and they help in any way they can. I did take a few one on one lessons and then jumped into classes. It's a blast but far from easy. Expect to be a little sore and achy as you will use muscles you had no idea you had. Flexibility is important so plan on getting there a little early to stretch out before class. I've had ACL replacement, hand reconstruction from a severe shattering, and have a hip replacement and I'm 47 years old. If I can get out there and flop around anyone can.

All of the staff at The Academy are professional, kind and friendly. They were so wonderful with the kids today and made sure that nothing was forgotten. They found out my daughter's theme and even went above and beyond and purchased Minecraft plates, napkins and tablecloths: An amazing touch! Cutting the cake with a real samurai sword might have been the icing on the cake, of course only after defeating the Jedi master in a light saber battle in the dark! Top notch!! Our youngest is already asking to do his party there next year! We can't wait to see the new space when they move!!
