They certainly did make a pretty decent schnitzel, and they had some okay beers on tap as well. I guess the thing that I liked the most about this pub though was the service, it was really quite good. Oh, and they also had a nice verandah out the back as well. Yeah, this pub was pretty good.

Pub food has grown up. The conquering march of the gastro-pub has commenced across Adelaide,…read morespreading new flavours, themes and techniques where once there was only steak & chips. Even the local pubs have smartened up their food options. You can tell the ones that have, their dining rooms are packed. Willunga Hotel is one of these local pubs. Housed in three historical sandstone buildings on High St Willunga, the Willunga Hotel also goes by the name of "The Middle Pub", part of the triumvirate of three pubs in the town, "The Top Pub" - The Old Bush Inn up toward Willunga Hill and "The Bottom Pub" - The Alma on Main Rd rounding out the trio. Willunga is an historic little town, and the Willunga Hotel is actually three buildings, one of which in 1848 opened as a grocery store flanked by two pubs. This pub is locally known for it's schnitzels. In particular, it's "Ring Burner". The Ring Burner is an enormous chicken or beef schnitzel topped with an array of spicy ingredients including a chilli-hot tomato sauce, pepperoni, chilli beans, and sliced jalepenos with a generous amount of cheese grilled to golden brown. It is ably supported by a large serve of crispy hot chips and a nicely presented salad in it's own dish with a tasty creamy dressing. Be warned - the Ring Burner is HOT and it bears its' name for a reason. Both times I have eaten at Willunga Hotel I've had the vegetarian option which most recently was a moussaka. It is attractively presented with a parmesan topping, rocket salad, and balsamic reduction patterning the plate. The moussaka included layers of chargrilled eggplant with spinach & ricotta in between and a thick tomato sauce. It was substantial, flavoursome and delicious. On my earlier visit it was a veggie and polenta stack which was equally delicious. A thoroughly enjoyable casual, good value meal in a beautiful historic building.
